In Indian context, water based coatings are not feasible for its cost & other operational issues, thus it is limited to CED application only. High solid coatings are the next alternate & it is gaining popularly for reduced VOC emission without compromising the physical & chemical properties of the coatings. Simultaneously all OEM manufacturers are seeking solutions for low bake coatings to restrict energy consumption in the curing process which will reduce carbon footprint in the whole supplychain.
When we talk about low bake coatings, reactivity & catalysis plays pivotal role in achieving results. Developing a low bake top coat has many challenges. Increased reactivity of the resin system often contributes to uncontrolled & incomplete reaction which is responsible for poor physical, chemical & weathering properties. Use of excess catalyst also has an impact on Electrical Resistivity (ER) which is a very important application parameter for electrostatic spray application. Combination of catalysis & reactivity negatively impacts storage stability. Judicious selection of catalyst, its dose optimization, right combination of crosslinker resin, Base to crosslinker ratio is very important to get desired results. In the current research paper we will explore various aspects of low bake formulation ingredients & their effect on coating performance to develop a low bake glossy monocoat white which meets the performance requirements of commercial vehicle manufacturers.Note de contenu : - Technology feasibility in Indian market

Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Despite its industrial importance, the subject of freeze-thaw (F/T) stability of latex coatings has not been studied extensively. There is also a lack of fundamental understanding about the process and the mechanisms through which a coating becomes destabilized. High pressure (2100 bar) freezing fixes the state of water-suspended particles of polymer binder and inorganic pigments without the growth of ice crystals during freezing that produce artifacts in direct imaging scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of fracture surfaces of frozen coatings. We show that by incorporating copolymerizable functional monomers, it is possible to achieve F/T stability in polymer latexes and in low-VOC paints, as judged by the microstructures revealed by the cryogenic SEM technique. Particle coalescence as well as pigment segregation in F/T unstable systems are visualized. In order to achieve F/T stability in paints, latex particles must not flocculate and should provide protection to inorganic pigment and extender particles. Because of the unique capabilities of the cryogenic SEM, we are able to separate the effects of freezing and thawing, and study the influence of the rate of freezing and thawing on F/T stability. Destabilization can be caused by either freezing or thawing. A slow freezing process is more detrimental to F/T stability than a fast freezing process; the latter actually preserves suspension stability during freezing. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Solvents in water-based coatings may be determined by sampling the coating head space using solid phase microextraction and gas chromatographing the extract. Several water-based coatings of known composition were analyzed by direct capillary gas chromatography and excellent agreement with theoretical VOC values was obtained. Fifty-two water-based architectural and industrial maintenance coatings were analyzed by a combination of SPME/GC and direct GC of solutions in methanol or dimethyl-formamide and the results compared with reported values. The SPME/GC method appears to be especially suitable for the analysis of low VOC content water-based coatings, for which EPA Method 24 often gives poor results. The identification and quantitation ofexempt solvents may be performed easily with this method. Residual solvent in dried paint films may be determined by SPME/GC.
