Effect of accelerated ageing on the physical and chemical properties of chrome-free leather / R. Li in JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF LEATHER TECHNOLOGISTS & CHEMISTS (JSLTC), Vol. 100, N° 1 (01-02/2016)

Titre : Effect of accelerated ageing on the physical and chemical properties of chrome-free leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. Li, Auteur ; Y. Z. Wang, Auteur ; Z. H. Shan, Auteur ; M. Yang, Auteur ; W. Li, Auteur ; H. L. Zhu, Auteur Année de publication : 2016 Article en page(s) : p. 19-24 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Tannage Résumé : With the expansion of market demand for chrome-free leathers, much attention has been paid to the safety in using them. Four kinds of chrome-free upper leathers made by Vegetable-Glutaraldehyde (Veg-GA), Glutaraldehyde-Vegetable (GA-Veg), Vegetable-Aluminium (Veg-AI) and a synthetic agent were subjected to accelerated ageing by hot air, UV light and Xe lamp respectively for 96 hours. The physical qualities and chemical indicators of these leathers before and after ageing, such as the shrinkage temperature (Ts), tensile strength, tear strength, colour difference, water vapour permeability, formaldehyde, phenol and aniline were tested. It was shown that some common rules apply to the four kinds of chrome-free upper leather samples after ageing, Xe-lamp ageing has made the tear strength, formaldehyde and phenol levels reduce the most and the aniline level increased the most. UV-light ageing has caused the maximum colour difference change whist hot-air ageing has caused the maximum Ts decrease. All of the ageing methods have enhanced the water vapour permeability. Summarising, leather samples made differently have different physical quality indicators after the same ageing treatment. As the basis of the leather quality change, it is found that the leather fibre turns into a bundle, curled, loose and distorted no matter what kind of ageing treatment is used. In previous work, addition of CNC improved several mechanical properties of the coating without changing other desirable properties such as optical transparency, color, and gloss. Measurements of nanoroughness were performed with atomic force microscopy on coated weathered surfaces. Surface roughness increased 8–10 times following weathering. Color and lightness measurements were done periodically, each 100 h, during the weathering. Testing was also done for a multilayer coating, varnish on an opaque coating on wood. Addition of unmodified, i.e., hydrophilic, CNC to transparent coatings did not downgrade the color stability of coatings but actually increased their color stability, while the effect on hydrophobically modified CNC was somewhat less. Thus, addition of CNC to coatings not only increases mechanical properties but also increases color stability of coated wood. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of ultraviolet light irradiation and water spray and temperature cycling on the color stability of waterborne coating systems on spruce were investigated. The test samples were treated with three coating systems (white and brown pigmented acrylate waterborne coatings systems with different layering) from six producers. The artificial weathering was carried out based on standardized (504 h) and increased weathering parameters (504 h). Thirty cycles of temperature changes were performed. Discoloration suggesting the rate of degradation process and color stability was measured by a spectrophotometer in L*a*b* color space. The results showed greater color stability of white coating systems during both experiments. The producer of acrylate coatings with iodopropynyl butyl carbamate and permethrin as biocides and benzotriazole, silicon dioxide and methylsiloxane as additives was characterized by the best coatings performance. The most sensitive color parameter to describe the surface quality as a result of irradiation and water spray has proven to be a change of lightness. A tendency towards degradation with increasing lightness was observed during weathering. The effect of temperature itself on color change was minimal. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed microscopic changes of coatings caused by artificial weathering. Textiles et tissusIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water repellency is a desired feature of fabrics for certain applications in textile industry such as water-repellent garments, tents, and umbrellas. Coating of fabrics with fluorocarbons or silicones followed by heat treatment is the general process to impart hydrophobicity even though the resulted water repellency is limited. In this study, we prepare a fluorine-free superhydrophobic coating from hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles that can be easily applied to common fabrics by simply spray coating, leading to superhydrophobic fabrics with a water contact angle of 172° and a sliding angle of 3°. The process to achieve extreme water repellency is simple and only involves a single step, and there is no need for further processes like annealing or heat treatment. The superhydrophobic coated fabrics display durability dependence on the texture of the underlying material, where coated chenille and nonwoven fabrics show robust mechanical durability against water impact, abrasion, and laundering. The ready availability of the coating materials, the simple process of application, and the robust mechanical durability of superhydrophobic fabrics show great potential for real-world applications. The structure of the sol–gel coatings was characterized by means of ATR FTIR, while the corrosion protection properties were assessed by polarization curves. Accelerated laboratory tests, such as exposure in both neutral and acetic salt spray chambers and filiform corrosion tests, were employed to investigate the corrosion protection properties of the cataphoretic paint-coated samples. The failure mechanisms of the different coatings were investigated. The experiments revealed that the presence of GLYMO in the sol–gel coating seems not to be suitable for acting as a coupling agent between the paint and the aluminum substrate. On a positive note, this work shows that the filiform corrosion test seems to be the most appropriate test to evaluate the efficiency of sol–gel layers employed as pretreatment to enhance the corrosion protection provided by a paint on an aluminum substrate.
