Other parameters, such as the aluminum-alloy, the aluminum surface treatment, and the pigmentation were varied too. It was found that two factors have a great influence on Ï„. One is the presence of an appropriate pigmentation of the paint. In some cases, nonpigmented paints led to very poor Ï„ values. Under industrial conditions, Ï„ values were generally high, exceeding 14 MPa. In some cases, the values for Ï„ can be interpreted in terms of AlOxHy-particles, which precipitate in the CDP after cathodic corrosion of aluminum in the course of the CDP-process. Rz increases in the order of the paints No. 3<2<<1<4. The paint system determines the strongest effect. But the surface treatment mode has no influence. The aluminum-corrosion products seem not to play any role. These findings point ot specific effects of the viscous behavior of the paint system in the course of baking procedure and/or the influence of the pigments at the surface Note de contenu : - The electrocoating process

The dyes were tested as fluorescent DNA intercalating probes to apply in DNA gel electrophoresis. The DNA samples stained with all dyes from the series demonstrated bright fluorescent signals. DNA fragments were successfully visualised under orange and green filters as well as under standard UV transillumination. Two of the studied dyes revealed higher sensitivity to DNA when compared with the commercial dimeric cyanine dye TOTO-1. Their sensitivity reached that of the commercial dimeric cyanine dye YOYO-1, but the emission was shifted to longer wavelengths. These qualities make the dyes suitable to apply in a wide range of medical and scientific analytical methods.

Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : EMS-Griltech's Grilon fibre and yarn and Griltex thermoplastic polymers are specifically designed for composite applications, performing either as adhésives, additives or matrix resins. The structure of the sol–gel coatings was characterized by means of ATR FTIR, while the corrosion protection properties were assessed by polarization curves. Accelerated laboratory tests, such as exposure in both neutral and acetic salt spray chambers and filiform corrosion tests, were employed to investigate the corrosion protection properties of the cataphoretic paint-coated samples. The failure mechanisms of the different coatings were investigated. The experiments revealed that the presence of GLYMO in the sol–gel coating seems not to be suitable for acting as a coupling agent between the paint and the aluminum substrate. On a positive note, this work shows that the filiform corrosion test seems to be the most appropriate test to evaluate the efficiency of sol–gel layers employed as pretreatment to enhance the corrosion protection provided by a paint on an aluminum substrate. Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The US meat industry currently produces approximately 35 million cattle hides annually as its most valuable coproduct. These hides serve as raw material, first for the leather industry, and then for the gelatin, and biomaterials industries. The conversion of animal hides into leather is a multistep process that has evolved more as art form than as science. Economic or environmental issues typically dictate changes in beam-house processes that prepare the hide for tanning. The tanner evaluates these changes, in terms of impact on tannery costs and quality of leather produced. Thus far, the effects of beam-house processes on the molecular characteristics of collagen have received little attention. The basis for tanning and most biomaterials applications is the stabilization of the collagen matrix, thus any changes to the molecular characteristics of hide collagen may be expected to impact these applications. This study showed that while the effects of different dehairing processes on the structure and stability of monomeric collagen were similar, the effects on the collagen fiber structure were distinct. These results are anticipated to assist the tanner as well as the manufacturers of collagen-based biomaterials and gelatin to better understand their substrate and changes to it that may occur when beam-house processes are altered.
