Besides material costs, production techniques have a considerable influence on the overall product costs of CFRP structures. Customized technologies together with automated processes are the conditions for modern, competitive composite manufacturing. Preforming based on textile techniques fulfils these requirements. Here, the dry reinforcement fibres are manufactured in a near net-shape configuration. The preform is then impregnated using a process such as Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) or Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion (VARI). It explains how fatigue should be understood in such structural materials and how mechanistic models can be developed to describe the fatigue damage growth sequence from first initiation to final failure. Within the framework of a research work in partnership with EADS and Aerolia, they identified a method to characterize fibre-placement quality during manufacturing. These technologies are eiher based on a carbon/carbon fibre-reinforced hafnium diboride (HfB2) material originally developed by Professor Jon Binner and his team at the University of Birmingham, funded by DSTL and EPSRC, or a commercially available carbon-silicon carbide composite produced by Surface Transforms plc and developed for this application by Surface Transforms and MBDA.
