In the same line, one of the promising candidates for substituting partially, and to some extent totally, petroleum-based raw materials with an equivalent or even enhanced performance properties, is the Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). This dark brown-colored viscous liquid obtained from shells of the cashew nut can be utilized for a number of polymerization reactions due to its reactive phenolic structure and a meta-substituted unsaturated aliphatic chain. Therefore, a wide variety of resins can be synthesized from CNSL, such as polyesters, phenolic resins, epoxy resins, polyurethanes, acrylics, vinyl, alkyds, etc. The present article discusses the potential of CNSL and its derivatives as an environment friendly alternative for petroleum-based raw materials as far as polymer and coating industries are concerned.

The processes involved in the synthesis are: 1. Lipase catalysed interesterification of castor oil and linseed oil at near ambient temperature to form an interesterification product 2. Esterification with phthalic anhydride. The article also describes the comparison of coating properties of the newly synthesised alkyd resins with those prepared by the conventional method. The various coating properties determined were hardness, adhesion, impact resistance, storage stability, chemical resistance and colour. Overall, chemoenzymatically synthesised alkyd resins showed better coating properties than the commercially available alkyd resins. Within the EU, there is considerable focus on reducing the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As a result of the Solvents Emission Directive, VOC emissions have been considerably reduced as of January 1, 2007 and a further reduction of allowable VOCs is dues as of 2010. These limiting values are applicable for decorative coatings that are not applied in installations where emission can be controlled.
The emission reductions needed by 2010 can only be achieved by the use of waterborne or high solids solventborne products. As most of the wall paints are already waterborne, special attention has to be given to trim paints, varnishes, primers and performance coatings.Note de contenu : - European VOC legislation

Oil extracted from rubber seeds was blended with soybean oil at various blending ratios (80:20, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, and 10:90). Thereafter, the blends were employed in the synthesis of polyesters (alkyd resins) via alcoholysis technique. The alkyd samples synthesized from the RSO, SBO, and their respective blends were characterized for comparative purpose. The RSO-/SBO-based alkyds and aforementioned blends have iodine values of 157.90/142.00, 152.44, 149.90, 143.16, 142.26, and 142.41 gI2/100 g and saponification values of 216.21/228.61, 203.67, 171.04, 161.97, 142.89, and 135.62 mgKOH/g, respectively. The drying property (set-to-touch time and the tack free) of the 100% RSO-based alkyd resin did not experience any significant improvement as the blending proportion of SBO in RSO increases. The tack-free and dry-through times for the blends were estimated to be around 129–133 and 236–243 min, respectively. Huggins and Kraemer viscosity relationship was used to extrapolate the intrinsic viscosities of the RSO- and SBO-based alkyds and their corresponding blends. The blends showed resistance to brine, water, and acid. However, only some exhibited fair resistance to alkali. The results from the investigation revealed that the alkyds prepared using a blend of RSO/SBO oil possess coating properties whose values are comparable to those of commercial polyesters. However, the studied SBO cannot be considered as good blending oil with RSO for the preparation of alkyd for the improvement of drying properties.
