Two sets of composites were produced – one with mercerized BF/CaCO3 and the other with unmercerized BF/ CaCO3. The effect of reinforcement loading on the impact energy, wear behavior, thermal resistance and water absorption properties of the composites were studied. Results showed that the mercerized BF/CaCO3 hybrid reinforced polypropylene composites exhibited significant increase in impact energy and offered better resistance to weight loss during wear test. Similarly, the thermal resistance of the mercerized composites was higher than their corresponding unmercerized composites. Additionally, water absorption in mercerized composites was highly resisted than in unmercerized samples. These results indicated that mercerization treatment and reinforcement hybridization improved the impact energy, wear, thermal resistance and water ingress resistance of hybrid fiber/ particulate reinforced polypropylene composites.

In this study, the addition of this compound to paints containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and expandable graphite as pigments was investigated to improve the fire protection performance of intumescent coatings. The combination of lignin with polyaniline (PANI) in the formulations was also evaluated, as previous studies have shown that PANI-based paints show promising results in intumescent coatings. For this purpose, the thermal protection of mild steel samples coated with these organic coatings was evaluated during a fire resistance test, with the sample exposed to a Bunsen torch. During the test, temperature data and thermography images for the steel surface were collected. The coatings were also evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimetry. It was found that all coatings formulated provided good fire protection to the steel substrate and the lignin could be a good option to replace nonrenewable sources in intumescent paints, since the sample coated with the paint containing 10 wt% lignin reached 230°C after 30 min of assay. In addition, when this compound was used in combination with PANI, the flame protection was even better. The best performance was observed for the paint formulated with combination of 10 wt% lignin and 10 wt% PANI-ES, whose metal substrate temperature was 170°C after 30 min of assay. Tannage Résumé : The sorption on Aswan clay of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from synthetic solution and tannery wastewater has been studied. The clay has been characterized and used for the removal of chrome. The adsorption was studied as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbate concentration, loading, temperature and interfering ions. The equilibrium data fitted well with a Freundlich adsorption isotherm, where the Kf and n values are 2.08 - 4.6 for Cr(VI), 14.45 - 2.5 for Cr(III) and 8.31 - 2.4 for tannery wastewater. In our study we choose Aswan clay, which is low in cost, to aid the economy of the process. Adsorption studies indicated that chrome removal is 77% for CrVI, 90% for CrIII and 75% for a tannery wastewater. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Adsorbents

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, the effect of crosslinking density of an acrylic-melamine clearcoat on water vapor transmission rate was evaluated. Four types of acrylic resins with different OH contents were used as the main polymeric backbone of the acrylic-melamine clearcoat. Also, three different acrylics to melamine–formaldehyde ratios were used in the coating formulations to obtain various crosslinking densities. It was observed that other film properties such as surface hydrophilicity and molecular homogeneity had a crucial impact on the clearcoat water vapor transmission rate together with the crosslinking density. Surprisingly, results showed that samples with acrylic resin with less OH content and lower melamine–formaldehyde crosslinker had the lowest water vapor transmission rate among other samples. These results were in agreement with the water contact angle and the data deduced from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results of clearcoats.
