Séparation huile/eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The design and development of efficient approaches for water–oil separation have had widespread interest. Most previously introduced techniques and materials used for development of the successful separation of oily wastewater could not answer all the desired demands, such as being efficient and environmentally and economically friendly. Therefore, in seeking a novel method capable of answering these expectations, surfaces with special wettability were introduced. A novel, reusable, and recyclable superhydrophilic and superoleophobic poly(Vsim-Vim)@PFOA@SiO2 nanocomposite-coated stainless steel mesh was synthesized through a facile preparation process. Since the most important factors of these coatings are their oleophobicity and hydrophilicity values, the water contact angle (WCA) and the oil contact angle (OCA) were measured. The coating indicated the excellent characteristics in which the results showed that WCA was 0°, while OCA was 142°, which confirmed remarkable superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity, respectively. It is worth mentioning that the coating owes its surface behavior mainly to the finer size of mesh and formation of silica, which causes the higher roughness and better oleophobicity, reduction of the surface energy of the synthesized poly(Vsim-Vim)@SiO2 nanocomposite by PFOA, the formation of hierarchical micro-nanometer scale roughness structures on the coating surface, and stable adhesion of SiO2 nanoparticles into poly(Vsim-Vim). Eventually, superb oil/water separation efficiency of 95% with high stability was attained. This result implied that the fabricated coating is a suitable candidate for water–oil emulsion separation which can potentially be employed in green industrial applications. Also, we believe this approach provides a potential application in controllable oil/water separation in large volumes. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Dirt pick-up is a long-standing issue for exterior architectural coatings. Dirt pick-up resistance (DPR) is highly sought by end users, and significant resources have been committed by paint manufacturers to improve it. The task is complicated by the multitude of regional and local factors such as seasonal weather, intensity of economic activity, or atmospheric particle burden. Typically, paint manufacturers try to control DPR via careful selection of additives and formula optimization. Testing the new formulas in real time is long and, therefore, there is a clear need for a faster and more reliable test that takes into account the key elements of the dirt pick-up mechanism: particle transport, adhesion, and release to/from the surface. Our team has developed an accelerated test that focuses on thermally driven adhesion and takes a fraction of the time necessary for outdoor exposure testing. The test correlates well with early outdoor exposure results when formulation parameters are controlled and when there are moderate-to-large performance differences among paint formulas. The test was used to improve the accelerated DPR of a paint formula, which subsequently was verified against real-time outdoor exposure in three geographic regions with different climates and airborne particulate pollution levels.

Polyphosphate d'ammoniumIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A novel epoxy-based self-intumescent fire protective coating has been developed by formulating a combination of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and copper (I) oxide (Cu2O) in epoxy resin (EP). The effects of various combinations on fire protective performance for steel plate were evaluated using a lab-scale simulated big panel test. Formulations with different mass ratios of APP to Cu2O ranging from 10:0 to 2:8 exhibit good fire protective performance for steel plate. While the final equilibrium backside temperature of un-protected steel plate reached 529 °C, it did not exceed 282 °C for the protected plates with 2 mm thick coatings, which is much lower than the failure temperature of steel (ca. 500 °C). The lowest final equilibrium backside temperature of coated steel plate was 234.5 °C for the optimal formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu2O) with an APP/Cu2O mass ratio of 6/4 in EP. Interestingly, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value (46.8%) for the optimized formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu2O) is not the highest, being lower than those of (EP/40APP/0Cu2O) and (EP/32APP/8Cu2O) formulations. The fire behavior of the optimized formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu2O) and control EP was compared using the cone calorimetry. The main fire hazard parameters such as peak heat release rate, total smoke production and peak CO production for EP/24APP/16Cu2O are reduced by 80.0%, 59.5% and 75.0%, respectively, relative to those for EP. This indicates that the EP/24APP/16Cu2O formulation provides significantly better fire safety than does control EP alone. A possible mode of action for the combination of APP/Cu2O in terms of the expansion ratio and heat insulation degree of the formed intumescent char layer may be proposed. Thus, this work contributed a reference for developing intumescent fire protective coating with high fire safety. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Coating preparation - Characterization

Mesure -- InstrumentsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Gloss is one of the main attributes to describe the appearance of surfaces and objects, as it contributes to the general quality perception. Gloss is a multidimensional quantity of which ‘specular gloss’ is the most commonly applied attribute. Specular gloss meters are standardized and widely used in industry. However, their readings correlate only partially to the general visual gloss impression, which also comprises distinctness-of-the-reflected-image (DOI), haze, contrast and surface-uniformity attributes. This study presents a more profound image-based gloss meter (iGM) which incorporates a CMOS camera detector. This concept is not new, but limited research has been conducted on the inclusion of various image processing evaluations for gloss attributes. The designed iGM is compatible to 60° specular gloss meter standards. The CMOS detector captures the reflected source image, which is processed to measure four perceptual attributes of surface gloss. The obtained results validate the 60° specular gloss evaluation and indicate a promising capability in characterizing DOI, haze, and contrast. Contrast is an important attribute that is not available yet in industrial gloss meters. It is measured using a diffuse aspecular light source. Generally, this iGM maintains the hardware principles of specular gloss meters, while evolving toward a representative gloss perception meter.
