This research work concerns the synthesis of highly transparent, hydrophobic, durable, and self-cleaning coatings as an alternative to fluorine-based coatings used on glass. The developed coating is produced by a chemical route (sol–gel method) using two silica-based precursors, hexamethyldisilazane, and tetraethoxysilane (HMDS/TEOS). Then, the prepared Gel HMDS/TEOS was deposited on glass slides by the dip-coating technique. Afterward, the effects of mechanical durability, water-drop testing, thermal cycling testing, and aging times on the hydrophobicity of the gel were analyzed. The properties of the coating were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–VIS-NIR spectrophotometry, and contact angle measurement. The results show that the organic modification of the gel by trimethylsilyl (–Si–(CH3)3) groups leads to a homogeneous and a hydrophobic surface. Sufficient dilution of this gel with ethanol has been found to provide a highly transparent coating without losing its hydrophobic property. In addition, the robust and durable coating exhibits high self-cleaning performance suitable for various industrial applications. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Controlling the particle size of solid-particle-stabilized emulsion polymers is a challenge for coating applications where high-solid-content emulsion polymers are required. Clay-particle-stabilized styrene–acrylic copolymer emulsion was prepared by a seeded semibatch emulsion polymerization process. The effect of the concentrations of clay, peptizing agent, and methacrylic acid on the processing, final particle size, and coagulum of the emulsion polymer was studied. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and field-emission-gun scanning electron microscopy techniques were employed to characterize the emulsion polymers. The kinetics of polymerization were monitored based on the percentage solid conversion, and particle size (DLS) analysis suggested a homogeneous coagulative mechanism. The zeta potential of the polymer particles indicated good stability of the emulsion. A stable, coagulum-free, low particle size (~ 300 nm) emulsion was prepared using clay platelets, and the polymer film exhibited improved thermal and mechanical properties that will make this type of emulsion polymer of great use for coating applications.

RotorsIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Due to a noticeable lack of fatigue data, the prospective use of plant-fibre composites (PFCs) in fatigue-critical components (like rotor blades) is limited as fatigue life prediction is not possible. This study includes three aspects : i) evaluating the fatigue loads on a 3.5-metre study blade, ii) constructing S-N diagrams and constant-life diagrams of PFCs, and iii) predicting the design life of a hemp/polyester blade. The fatigue life prediction confirms that the PFC blade satisfies the 20-year design life criteria, inclusive of a 1.50 safety factor. Note de contenu : - Blade fatigue load evaluation

Injection molding experiments were conducted with various process parameters to understand the correlations between the pressure of the cavity, nozzle, and oil pump. A high correlation (R > 0.95) between oil pressure and nozzle pressure could be found in the study. The oil pressure in the injection molding machine could fully describe the pressure variation of the molten plastic at the nozzle. However, the correlation between nozzle pressure and cavity pressure was slightly reduced due to changes in injection speed, melting temperature, and packing time. Thus, a suitable molding window can improve the correlation between oil pressure, nozzle pressure, and cavity pressure. This study provides a correlation between the three pressures and a reference for the future selection of process variables, an essential pretreatment for online monitoring. Composites structures were characterized in terms of fiber length and distribution, and cumulative length ratio, at five locations along the mixing zone. Although significant fiber breakage was achieved for both configurations, it was markedly lower in composites processed using the EME, because whereas the high shear stress kneading motion in the KB degrades fibers significantly, fiber breakup is significantly minimized by the alignment induced by the EME prior to flow in the high-stress regions.
