Results of those variants show effect on molecular weight of resin checked in terms of viscosity. There is decrease in molecular weight by increasing the initiator concentration and decreasing the solvent concentration independently. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is a growing need for more sustainable coatings, where applying biobased raw materials is one of the important requirements. In this paper, the process of developing a biobased binder with a very interesting combination of mechanical properties, excellent water resistance and water absorption is described. Achieving a heterogenous particle morphology proved to be essential for achieving a good set of mechanical properties in these coatings. Effective phase separation between very - and equally - hydrophobic copolymer hard and soft domains can be realised by using significantly different acid concentrations in the two phases. The use of 1% acrylic acid in the soft phase and 5% in the high Tg phase resulted in a copolymer emulsion, which when cast into a film gave a film morphology of a soft matrix with high Tg protrusions. Applying this finding in an emulsion polymer containing 2-octyl acrylate and isobornyl methacrylate as the prime biobased monomers, resulted in a copolymer emulsion with a biobased content of 30%, based on 14C concentration, and a solids content of 49%. Surface hardness and blocking resistance were significantly increased, while the excellent elongation at break was not negatively compromised. Due to the more hydrophobic composition, the water resistance and water absorption properties were significantly better than those of the fossil fuel-based reference. The carbon footprint (CFP) of the thus-formed biobased resin is 17.2% lower than the fossil fuel-based reference, when compared conservatively, not considering the higher solid content of the biobased version. Coating compositions with a varying AAR/HAFA ratio have been prepared and their various film properties have been studied and compared with the conventional butylated melamine formaldehyde (MF) based systems. The study reveals that HAFA can be used successfully as a crosslinking agent for AAR in baking systems. In addition to other technical advantages, the use of HAFA is environmentally friendly as no toxic volatiles are evolved during curing reaction, unlike in MF-cured systems. New developments and advances in synthesis capabilities provide the market with a myriad of polymers for the vertical elastomeric masonry coatings market. New polymer technology has been developed without the addition of alkyl-phenolethoxylate surfactants, NMP or formaldehyde that enables the formulation of low VOC elastomeric coatings for vertical masonry applications.
Coatings based on the new technology have the ability to withstand high pH environments due to improvements in alkali resistance. The high level of alkali resistance gives the coating the ability to be used as self-priming coating, primer or topcoat.
New elastomeric coatings exhibit excellent water and efflorescence resistance, reducing the lifetime maintenance requirements and costs associated with preparing and recoating. Lower water intake of the coating prevents water penetration into the building structure and enhances wet adhesion of the topcoat at the masonry substrate. Improved water resistance and adhesion properties protect the structure from water damage. High tensile and elongation provides coatings with superior crack resistance when compared to conventional architectural coatings. In addition, improved weathering and resistance to dirt pick-up keep surfaces clean, with a long-lasting, fresh appearance.
This technology is recommended for use in elastomeric primers and topcoats for masonry façades, as well as new/hot, aged or repainted surfaces including exterior walls, concrete, block, brick, stucco, fibre cement and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
Modifications to traditional styrene acrylic and all-acrylic chemistries have been implemented into development of new polymers for elastomeric applications.Note de contenu : - THE CHALLENGE
