The formation of covalent bonds between water-borne acrylic dispersions and softwood (European pine heart- and sapwood) and hardwood (dark red meranti, mahogany) species mainly comprise polar-reactive hydroxyl-groups at the cellulose, and hemi-cellulose polymeric chains are highlighted. The improvement in early wet adhesion bonding by adding functional monomers into acrylic polymeric chains and alternatively by wood surface activation are analysed, interpreted and discussed by a modified adhesion pull-off test method following ISO 24624 and by surface tension measurements. Implications towards the formulation of new types of wood acrylic dispersions are derived. The New Zealand site had a climatic index 50% more challenging. Significant differences in performance relating to coating, species, site, and exposure are presented. The coating and site had the most significant effects, while species had the least. A solvent-borne stain and a hybrid paint qualified for stable end-use situations in both countries. An acrylic paint performed better in Germany while an alkyd gave the poorest performance of the four coatings tested. More effective fungicidal coating properties are required in New Zealand to suppress mold growth. Areas of deficiency for internationalizing the European weathering standard EN 927 are discussed. The use of the water uptake coefficient, wt, and the dynamics of a liquid water drop contact angle, Ï…(√t), for the determination of lifetime expectation is described. Both methods are found to give equivalent information regarding changes in water protection of six mainly waterborne unweathered and six-month weathered exterior wood coatings. The advantages of the contact angle method are outlined. Furthermore, a theoretical approach is presented to relate the observed proportionality of the contact angle with square root of time to diffusion controlled processes on the coatings surface.
