The low viscosity of epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO), its reactivity, and relatively low cost make it an inexpensive candidate co-resin in cationic thermally cured coatings and inks using blocked acid catalysts. Formulations with up to 40% ESBO in the epoxy resin blend were investigated. Blending of cycloaliphatic resin with 10% ESBO gave a bake coating with the same results as the standard formulation except pencil hardness was one unit lower when cured for 12 min at 120°C with a heat de-blocked catalyst. The hardness of coatings with ESBO is adjustable by changing the epoxy/polyol ratio, using harder polyols and harder epoxy resins. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ink-jet inks need to be very low in viscosity to transport the ink through the jet nozzle as well as for drop formation and integrity. The objective of this project was to demonstrate UV-cured systems for ink-jet inks and coatings with zero volatile organic compounds and very low viscosity. Cycloaliphatic epoxy systems were selected as binders of choice for this project due to their low viscosity and ability to be cured using UV-cationic photoinitiators. UV-curable coatings and inks with zero VOC and less than 10 cPs viscosities were formulated using exempt solvent acetone and vinyl cyclohexene diepoxide. UV-curable inks with up to 10% black dye were formulated. Rapid cure was achieved through the use of aryl sulfonium salts of hexafluorophosphoric acid. The presence of dye inhibited the reaction, but adequate cure of dyed formulations was achieved by increasing the concentration of the photoinitiator. Partially and fully epoxidized soybean oils (ESBO) were converted to novel soybean oil phosphate ester polyols (SOPEP) which were successfully incorporated into solventborne and waterborne bake coatings. Thermally cured waterborne alkyd coatings were produced with improved coating adhesion, low volatile organic compounds (VOC), excellent impact resistance, good hardness, less severe curing conditions, and lower cost. Solventborne alkyd coatings gave similar results. Soybean oil phosphate ester polyols appear to offer the coatings industry a low cost route to tough, durable, environmentally compliant, high performance coatings. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of soybean oil phosphate ester polyols (SOPEP) was prepared by reaction of fully epoxidized soybean oil with phosphoric acid and simultaneous hydrolysis in the presence of a polar solvent. The polyols were characterized by determination of acid value, oxirane number, hydroxyl value, molecular weight (GPC), and FTIR spectra. These polyols with varying amounts of acid phosphate groups could be self-emulsified to form aqueous dispersions after neutralization with organic base. These aqueous dispersions showed varying degrees of stability and their appearance ranged from opaque dispersions to translucent to clear solutions. Waterbome coating compositions were prepared using these aqueous dispersions as principal components and their thermally cured film properties were studied. It was found that by careful selection and formulation, SOPEPs can be successfully used for low-VOC waterbome coating formulations. SOPEPs with 3.5% phosphate ester content showed visibly superior corrosion resistance properties. UrethanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Soybean oil based polyols-soybean oil phosphate ester polyols (SOPEPs)-having varying hydroxyl content and viscosity were prepared as low cost and low-VOC polyols for coatings applications. These SOPEPs were used as the hydroxyl component of "two-component polyurethane (2K-PU)" coating compositions and their film properties were studied. Blends of commercial polyester polyol and SOPEP in varying proportions were also used to formulate PU coatings. Their film properties were studied and compared. We found that SOPEP can be used as the sole hydroxyl component or as the reactive diluent for polyester polyols in 2K-PU coating systems. SOPEP is derived from a relatively inexpensive and renewable resource and the use of SOPEP can substantially reduce VOC and cost ofPU coating formulations.
