One area that deservedly receives much attention is the disinfection of health facilities like hospitals, public areas like bathrooms and train stations, and cleaning areas in the food industry. Microorganisms and viruses can attach to and survive on surfaces for a long time in most cases, increasing the risk for infection. One of the most attractive disinfection methods is paints and coatings containing nanoparticles that act as photocatalysts. Of these, titanium dioxide is appealing due to its low cost and photoreactivity. However, on its own, it can only be activated under high-energy UV light due to the high band gap and fast recombination of photogenerated species. The ideal material or coating should be activated under artificial light conditions to impact indoor areas, especially considering wall paints or frequent-touch areas like door handles and elevator buttons. By introducing dopants to TiO2 NPs, the bandgap can be lowered to a state of visible-light photocatalysis occurring. Naturally, many researchers are exploring this property now. This review article highlights the most recent advancements and research on visible-light activation of TiO2-doped NPs in coatings and paints. The progress in fighting air pollution and personal protective equipment is also briefly discussed. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : As a significant method to inhibit metal corrosion by blocking the diffusion of corrosive mediums to the metal surface, the anticorrosion coating with a self-healing function can actively repair a damaged structure and improve the anticorrosion performance to better meet actual needs. In this study, “external aid” and “intrinsic triggering” self-healing coatings have been introduced in detail, including the preparation method, healing mechanism and practical applications. The healing of “external aid” is based on the addition components such as microcapsules containing healing agents and functional nanoparticles, whose ability of self-healing shows the independence with the coating resin. But the finitely additive amount may limit the sustainable use of “external aid” components, and the abundant fillers also change the basic physical properties of the coating. On the contrary, the “intrinsic triggering” resins can form the cover layer in the defects owing to the physical or chemical reactions between the polymer chains, along with the unlimited cycles theoretically. By contrast, the small defects or gaps can be repaired gradually through chain reactions, but the large areas of damage may need the quick release of healing additives in “external aid” coating. In this review, the advances of two kinds of self-healing coatings were analyzed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various healing technologies, and the challenges of development and prospects were also forecasted to provide useful ideas. Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The flame retardancy of waterborne intumescent coatings for plywood has been investigated. Different concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%) of organoclay (Cloisite 15A) were added to a hybrid (etherified melamine formaldehyde and polyvinyl acetate) resin to generate coatings. The CO and CO2 emissions from the coatings during combustion were determined. An intumescent coating containing organoclay exhibited superior flame-retardant properties than does the pure hybrid resin. By comparing the performance of intumescent coatings prepared using organoclay and unmodified clay, it has been demonstrated that coatings contain the modified clay that have better flame-retardant properties. The presence of organoclay in the coating promotes the formation of an ideal char layer during combustion when the concentration is 3%. Intumescent coatings containing organoclay undergo combustion with lower CO emissions, but greater CO2 emission. 13C, 27Al, and 31P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the chemical structure of the char layers to determine the mechanism underlying char formed upon combustion and delineate the process of char degradation. Based on the observed flammability and CO/CO2 emission, intumescent coatings containing 3% or 5% organoclay display a greater reduction in flammability than do coatings containing higher concentrations of the organoclay. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The performance of fouling control coatings (FCC) is evaluated based on static exposure on test sites worldwide. There are different standards concerning the evaluation of the performance of the FCC. However, to the knowledge of the authors, there is not a standardized reporting guideline for how to evaluate the test site in which the FCC is exposed. Several factors such as water conditions, seasonal biofouling, and accessibility of sunlight can vary dependent on placement within or between test sites. This in turn makes it difficult to compare the performance of FCC exposed at different locations within a or at another test site. In this study, an analysis of the CoaST Maritime Test Centre (CMTC) has been performed to investigate how geographical orientation and changes in depth influence the biofouling propensity on coated panels. The investigation showed no statistical significance in the biofouling propensity between panels exposed to different geographical orientations at the CMTC. Similarly, no statistical significance was found between panels placed at different depths at the CMTC. If similar reporting was performed at other test sites, a better basis for comparison of FCC worldwide would be obtained, and this could be achieved with a standardized reporting guideline. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hydroxyl acrylate emulsion was prepared firstly by the semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization, and then adding polyaniline (PANI)/Cu/ZrO2 ternary nanocomposites, two-component waterborne polyurethane (2 K WPU) composite coatings with antistatic and antibacterial properties were obtained by mixing the emulsion with hydrophilic modified polyisocyanate. The structure and morphology of the PANI/Cu/ZrO2 were observed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffractometer. The thermal, antistatic, antibacterial, anticorrosion, and mechanical properties of the 2 K WPU composite coatings were determined. The results showed that the addition of the ternary nanocomposites increased the antistatic, antibacterial, anticorrosion, and mechanical properties of the 2 K WPU coating. The initial decomposition temperature increased from 200 to 225°C, and the tensile strength increased by 44.4%. For this purpose, a thin film of the smart anticorrosion caffeine@MIL-100 (Fe) coating was deposited on an 308L-16 SS surface using a decanoic acid self-assembled monolayer. A significant encapsulation efficiency for caffeine loading in the MIL-100 (Fe) metal organic framework was obtained as 17.8%. The experimental data indicated that the caffeine@MIL-100 (Fe) coating would release the caffeine very rapidly as the solution became acidified around the corrosion sites and formed a protective layer to prevent from penetrating solution into the substrate. The EIS results and the Tafel plots showed that the proposed smart coating has an excellent performance to protect 308L-16 SS from corrosion in saline media. Based on the results, decreasing the solution pH would cause the MIL-100 (Fe) framework to decompose and subsequently release caffeine at the 308L-16 SS surface. Qualité -- ContrôleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coating properties, such as gloss, rheology, and exterior durability, are strongly affected by the particle size distribution (PSD) of pigment agglomerates. Consequently, moving from the industrial practice of a maximum agglomerate size evaluation after dispersion (i.e., grindometer readings) to an accurate measurement of the entire PSD, holds a promising potential for quality control, product optimization, and research. The aim of the present work was to develop an analysis procedure, based on laser diffraction, for PSD measurements of coatings. In the experiments, acrylic-based TiO2 or Cu2O predispersions (i.e., mill bases), with variations in the composition and dispersion parameters, were investigated. Results show that the laser diffraction measurements are influenced by the so-called obscuration value of the diluted sample, the equipment-input refractive index values, and the shape assumption for the pigment agglomerates. Furthermore, the unavoidable sample dilution, prior to a measurement, strongly affects the stability of primary particles and agglomerates. When using a mixture of the pertinent binder and solvent, as opposed to the pure solvent only, and taking rheology issues into consideration, solvent shock was avoided and reliable PSDs could be obtained. The new analytical procedure was used on selected dispersions with variations in coating formulations and equipment operational parameters and allowed for precise detections of the developments in PSDs and volume-moment mean diameters. In summary, the principle of laser diffraction, with proper control of the measurement conditions, was demonstrated to be a reliable technique for PSD evaluation of coatings and predispersions. Test d'immersionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Glass transition temperature (Tg) of the commercial epoxy–amine marine coatings is among the most important thermo-mechanical properties which determine the performance of the individual coat and the whole coating system. Ingress of (sea) water and temperature are known to have an influence on the Tg of model epoxy–amine coatings. This work shows the use of thermal analysis techniques like temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to study the effect of water immersion and immersion temperature on the Tg of four different commercial epoxy–amine coatings. In addition, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to study the chemical changes that occurred in the epoxy–amine network upon immersion in water at 40 and 60°C. The results obtained clearly show that the Tg is significantly influenced by water and water immersion temperature if the Tg (or the Tg region) of the epoxy–amine coating is lower than the immersion temperature. FTIR results showed that chemical changes can happen in the epoxy–amine network upon water immersion. Practical example of the effect of Tg of coatings on their protective performance has been demonstrated by using the NACE TM-0174 standard’s equipment which showed that the low Tg epoxy–amine coatings will lose their protective properties earlier than the high Tg coatings when exposed to similar test conditions.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To protect surfaces against marine biofouling, the continuous leaching of biocides, such as cuprous oxide (Cu2O) and copper pyrithione (CuPT), from antifouling coatings is a widespread and effective method. However, from an environmental and economic perspective (costs of raw materials), a high biocide loading of formulations is not sustainable. Silica aerogel-encapsulated CuPT is a promising approach to reduce Cu2O and CuPT loadings without compromising the mechanical properties and antifouling performance of the coating. In the present study, silica aerogels, with varying CuPT loadings, were incorporated into model coating formulations, and selected coating properties, i.e., rheology, water absorption, and hardness, were measured and evaluated. Furthermore, to demonstrate antifouling performance, static exposure testing with the aerogel-containing coatings was performed. The level of CuPT loading of the silica aerogels did not have a significant influence on neither the water absorption nor the rheology of the coating. However, an increase in the CuPT loading of the aerogel from 0 to 80 wt% reduced the coating’s pendulum hardness from 61 to 37 s. Additionally, compared to a reference coating with nonencapsulated CuPT, results demonstrate that a coating containing silica aerogel-encapsulated CuPT provides a 17% higher antifouling resistance when evaluated according to guidance from The European Chemicals Agency.

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Marine biofouling is a major issue in the marine industry. Traditional antifouling coatings have been banned worldwide due to their toxicity to nontarget organisms. Herein, we reported a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating with coffee as antifoulants. In the study, two coffee/PDMS composite coatings with 5 and 10% weight coffee were prepared, and pristine PDMS was selected as the control. In the early stage of biofouling, the settlement of microalgae and bacteria is crucial for the biofilm formation; thus, the Chlorella and bacteria Paracoccus pantotrophus (P. pantotrophus) were employed as the fouling models in the antifouling tests. In the antialgal test, both coffee/PDMS coatings exhibited excellent antialgal capability, while pristine PDMS was covered with many algal cells. In the antibacterial test, both coffee coatings showed better antifouling capability than the pristine PDMS, and the 10% coffee coating showed the best antifouling capability. A further study revealed that the coffee could inhibit the growth of P. pantotrophus in the liquid environment. According to the immersion and antibacterial tests, it could be concluded that the coffee coatings released coffee to surroundings to prevent biofouling. Overall, the 10% coffee/PDMS coating is a good choice for preventing marine biofouling, but the coffee leaching may be a barrier for long-term use.

The present study investigated the production and characterization of a biochar produced from Pinus elliottii for application in an epoxy paint cured by ultraviolet radiation, comparing it with graphite, in proportions of 12.5 and 20 wt%. The Pinus elliottii sample was initially ground, and then submitted to physical and morphological characterization by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Later, the Pinus elliottii sample was subjected to pyrolysis at a temperature of 1050°C at a low heating rate (5°C/min). Biochar and graphite were separately incorporated into an epoxy UV-curable paint. The painted samples had their thickness measured and their mechanical and physical properties evaluated, namely gloss, hardness, bending, impact, contact angle with water, and exposure to salt spray. Biochar and graphite promoted a reduction in gloss and improved pencil hardness when incorporated into a UV-curable epoxy paint. In the salt spray resistance test, samples containing both biochar and graphite showed a slight delay in the beginning of the corrosion process. However, samples with biochar behaved better than samples with graphite in terms of blistering of the film in the incision region. Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS

XylanaseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Existing antifouling coatings for marine environments rely on the toxicity of copper and small-molecule additives to prevent organism growth. These come with a myriad of environmental and health-related risks, as these additives inevitably leach into seawater. Enzyme-based antifouling polymers have tremendous potential as part of an environmentally innocuous antifouling strategy, but have not yet been commercially realized. Biofouling begins with small molecules and polymers that initiate settlement for larger organisms. Using an enzymatic coating to rapidly hydrolyze these compounds could reduce the surface concentration of these attractive polymers and prevent organism growth. Here, antifouling xylanase and lysing complex enzymes were covalently tethered to surfaces using isoindolinone groups and click chemistry. We found that xylanase and lysing complex continue to hydrolyze xylosidic bonds in hemicellulose polysaccharides after covalent tethering, and the coating maintained activities of > 80% and > 50%, respectively, after 2 months while submerged in artificial seawater, demonstrating this material’s potential as an eco-friendly antifouling coating. Herein, a novel DA/PEI/SiO2/antibacterial peptide antifouling coating was prepared by a multi-modification approach. Initially, the nanocoatings were prepared by depositing DA, PEI, and SiO2 on the dopamine (DA)-modified 304 stainless steel (SS) surface, and finally, the DA/PEI/SiO2/AMPs composite coatings were prepared by grafting antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The surfaces of SS before and after modification were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle measurement, and 3D optical profilometer. SSN-1 cells were used to evaluate the cytocompatibility of the modified surface. The results revealed that the cells cultured on the modified surface still maintained a good adhesion morphology, demonstrating the superior cytocompatibility of the composite coating. The anti-biofilm and antimicrobial properties of the modified samples were evaluated using Vibrio natriegens. The antibacterial efficiency of SS-DA/PEI/SiO2 surfaces before and after AMPs modification reached 78.39 and 95.90%, and anti-biofilm efficiency of AMPs modified surface achieved 72.87% corresponding to 44.19% of SS-DA/PEI/SiO2. The successful grafting of AMPs improved the antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of the modified sample surfaces. Electrochemical and stability tests indicated that the modified sample surfaces exhibited excellent corrosion resistance and antifouling stability properties. This research could provide a novel green anti-fouling and anti-corrosion strategy for the marine industry and other related fields. First, a thin (ca. 5 μm) electrically conductive polyaniline (PANI) coating was wormed directly on the carbon steel (CS) surface, on top of which a thicker (ca. 20 μm) epoxy coating was applied. The inner PANI layer was also loaded with graphene oxide (GO). The resulting anticorrosive properties of the coatings were investigated in 3.5 wt.% NaCl employing electrochemical techniques, while the surface and cross-sectional morphology of the coatings was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the commercial epoxy coating started gradually failing several days after its exposure to the electrolyte, while it took 37 days for larger pores to appear in the PANI/epoxy coating, which then gradually continued to fail. On the other hand, the PANI-GO/epoxy coating maintained its high corrosion resistance, without forming impedance-detectable pores, over the entire testing period (two months). The excellent corrosion protection properties of the PANI-GO/epoxy coating were prescribed solely to the presence of the underlying PANI-GO layer, which represents a better barrier for the transport of hydrated corrosive ions to the CS surface, through the combined action of charge (repulsion of hydrated corrosive anions and iron oxide film formation), surface energy (hydrophobicity), and blocking mechanisms. The surface-modified HNTs (m-HNTs) were added to the epoxy coating, and the corrosion protection performance was evaluated in terms of the mixing ratio. The m-HNTs were characterized by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission transmission electron spectroscopy. The addition of m-HNTs to the epoxy coating led to an improvement in its barrier and adhesion properties. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted to evaluate the corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating with different mixing ratios. Corrosion protection performance was successfully improved by an increase in m-HNTs. The results were in accordance with those of the barrier and adhesion properties. Système de projectionIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Compared with spray gun painting, electrostatic spraying rotating bell (ESRB) painting can provide better film-forming quality and higher adhesion rate, which is more suitable for automobile base coating. However, the complexity of the spray pattern of the ESRB and the automobile surface geometric makes the spray process planning a more challenging problem. This paper aims to provide a new parameterized model of the ESRB to facilitate the thickness calculation and trajectory planning in the off-line painting programming. Firstly, according to the distribution characteristics of paint particles and the force analysis of adhesion process, a new static deposition rate model—offset asymmetric Gaussian model is proposed on the plane. The parameters in the new model have intuitive practical significance and can fully reflect the characteristics of ESRB coating deposition rate. Then based on the analysis of the relationship between the static model and uniform linear spraying deposition, the static model is established by measuring the layer data of corresponding uniform linear spraying. In order to further simulate the paint thickness on curved surfaces, the projection model with variable spraying distance and deposition point normal deflection is also deduced. Finally, a parameterized static model and sampling points library are established which provide efficient and accurate prediction of static deposition result, and is more suitable for off-line programming. Three different groups of simulation proved that the proposed static deposition rate model has high calculation accuracy for different working conditions and fast simulation speed for different spraying parameters.

The curing behavior of acrylic powder coatings affects the coating film properties. In this study, a catalyst was used to control the curing conversion rate, and the curing characteristics and physical properties were compared for coatings with and without the catalyst. Differential scanning calorimetry and an isoconversional method were used to obtain activation energies, and the conversion rate under different isothermal conditions was computed. Notably, complete curing could not be achieved without the catalyst; however, the catalyst-containing coating was entirely cured. With sufficient curing established, the addition of the catalyst was found to increase the adhesion, impact resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, the recoatability was reduced owing to a lack of unreacted monomers on the surface of the catalyst-containing coating film, as verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In general, the addition of a catalyst to acrylic powder coatings enabled complete curing and enhanced most physical properties, offering an improved formulation for applications across high-corrosion environments. Poly(3,4-éthylènedioxythiophène)
Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was electrosynthesized on nickel electrodes from aqueous micellar solutions of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) containing sodium saccharin or sodium perchlorate as supporting electrolytes. The choice of the aqueous medium for the preparation of PEDOT is mainly dictated by its relevant interest on the economic and ecological fronts. The electrodeposition of the organic coating was achieved using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry. This latter electrochemical method proved to be the most suited to the preparation of homogeneous and adherent PEDOT films. Elsewhere, the presence of SDBS micelles in the electrolytic medium led to an improvement of the monomer solubility and a notable decrease in its oxidation potential. Furthermore, spectroscopic and microscopic characterization techniques revealed regular and compact nodule-like structure of the coating and proved the increase in its doping rate when increasing the electrosynthesis current density. On the other hand, in order to discuss the potential application of the prepared conducting polymer as protective layer against corrosion, several electrochemical tests were performed, using open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods. OCP curves have shown a slight increase in the potential toward more positive values, while the EIS measurements have given a 90° capacitive line indicating the pure capacitive behavior of the polymeric system and have proven the presence of a fast charge transfer at the metal/polymer and polymer/solution interfaces.
Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Electrospraying is an effective method of producing functional layers on substrates. By means of electrospraying, it is possible to create uniform and fine droplets that attract to the substrate without being blown away by the electric field formed by the nozzle and the substrate. The uniformity of the coated layer is rarely affected by a fluid drying process (such as Marangoni flow on substrates) as the size of droplets can reach micron/nano-levels and the solvents in the droplets can evaporate quickly. Therefore, the electrospray process is often referred to as ‘dry deposition.’ However, when an electrospray system with multinozzles is considered for the faster process of producing large substrates, the drying process may be completely different than for a single-nozzle system. In addition, crosstalk and nonuniform spray volume from each nozzle can pose an additional problem that needs to be addressed. In this study, we proposed a multinozzle electrospray system and process to average the spray amount heterogeneity and achieve layer uniformity in a fast-drying process. Finally, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed methods by fabricating superhydrophobic layers on a highly insulating substrate. Citric acid was employed as a functionality-enhancing bio-based monomer for coating applications. This resin (PUA) was synthesized from citric acid (CA)-based polyester-polyol (CAP) and subsequently reacted with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and end-capped with 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) to form a tetra-functional acrylate precursor (UCAP). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to characterize the citric acid-based polyester-urethane-acrylate (UCAP). This oligomer was formulated with a reactive diluent and a photoinitiator (UCAP PUA), applied on both wood and metal substrates and cured under UV-radiation. The mechanical, chemical and thermal properties of the coated substrates were investigated and compared to a commercial urethane acrylate (CUA). The mechanical properties such as crosscut adhesion, pencil hardness, impact strength and flexibility showed comparable results. Even though the chemical resistance and free film properties of the synthesized urethane acrylate (UCAP) were found to be inferior, the thermal properties were observed to be superior.
(Wikipédia)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Excess thermal energy can cause significant damage to the mechanical parts of various systems. Temperature sensors can measure and control the temperature in these systems to prevent such damage. However, the applications of existing temperature sensors are limited by their shape as it limits their ability to attach to different surfaces. Consequently, it is challenging to measure the temperature of curved surfaces. In this study, we propose a smart paint that can measure the temperature of curved surfaces to address the above issues. The smart paint fabrication method must be optimized because the resistance characteristics of these paints differ according to the manufacturing conditions. In this study, a curing process was used to manufacture the smart paint; the optimal curing temperature and curing time were determined experimentally. Furthermore, a coating solution was applied to increase the surface stability of the fabricated paint. The coating was applied using a spin coater at a specific rotation time and speed. We also determined the optimal coating conditions. The coating was confirmed to increase the surface stability of the smart paint. The structures of the composites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, BET analysis, and SEM. The results showed that the composites had increased interlayer spacing and formed a loosely laminated stacked structure. The specific surface area (31.6863 m2/g) and pore volume (0.0104 cm3/g) of the composites increased. The hydrophobic and anticorrosive properties of the composite coatings were investigated and compared to the epoxy coating. The composite coatings (AM@GO/EP) had larger contact angles and smoother surfaces than the epoxy coating (EP). After 30 days of immersion, the value of |Z|0.01 Hz was approximately 1011 Ω cm2, which had changed slightly since initial immersion. Mechanistic analysis shows that the improved corrosion resistance of the composite coatings was due to the high specific surface area of the 2D material, the oxygen-containing groups of GO, the amino groups of APTES@MMT and the synergy between the MMT and the GO nanosheets. SilanesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, silane coupling agent KH560-FA containing furan groups was synthesized to modify the surface of graphene oxide, and maleimide group-capped waterborne polyurethane was synthesized at the same time. A self-healing material with a microcrosslinking network structure based on polymer/modified graphene oxide was synthesized by Diels–Alder (DA) reaction. The materials obtained can control the formation and fracture of DA chemical bonds under thermal stimulation and repair the damage macroscopically. With the addition of modified graphene oxide from 0 wt% to 0.4 wt%, the tensile strength of the material increased from 3.59 MPa to 15.27 MPa, the repair efficiency reached a maximum of 89.19%, the water contact angle increased from 61° to 77°, and the water absorption decreased from 10.52% to 3.40%. The addition of modified graphene oxide significantly improved the hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of the material. When the addition of KH560-FA-GO was 0.4 wt%, the corrosion resistance of the coating prepared by the emulsion was remarkably improved in deionized water, 5% sodium chloride solution, and 5% sulfuric acid solution. It showed the application potential of materials in the field of coatings. In this context, acrylic polymer, a significant synthetic fabric used in the textile industry, was selected to provide it with multifunctional characteristics. For this purpose, the acrylic fabric was functionalized with amidoxime groups to serve as ligands for immobilizing silver ions so that it can be further in situ reduced to AgNPs. Polydopamine (PDA) has the advantage of being an ion binding and reducing agent by virtue of its phenolic hydroxyl groups capable of reducing silver ions to AgNPs, and it was exploited in this study for imparting the acrylic fabric with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Additionally, glucose as a reducing agent was also used to form AgNPs-loaded amidoximated acrylic fabric. The pristine, amidoximated, PDA-coated AgNPs-loaded amidoximated, and AgNPs-loaded amidoximated acrylic fabrics have been characterized using ATR-FTIR, SEM, EDX, and tensile strength. All fabric samples were assessed as antioxidants using DPPH and FRAP assays. Antimicrobial properties against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans were also evaluated using broth assay. An almost complete killing (99.99%) of the pathogenic Gram-negative Escherichia coli was achieved using PDA-coated AgNPs-loaded amidoximated acrylic fabric. The overall results indicated that the composite nanocoating using PDA-AgNPs showed good tensile strength and excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties to suggest the viability of PDA-AgNPs coating of fabrics for possible application as biomedical textiles. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of Zn2+ based hydrophobic coordination polymers (CPs) have been synthesized by varying methylene spacers length (m = 1 to m = 6) of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids followed by reaction with the zinc acetate by using hydrothermal method. The synthesized CPs were coated on the mild steel (MS) specimens to investigate the effect of methylene spacers length of dicarboxylic acids on hydrophobicity and corrosion behavior. The synthesized CPs and their coatings on MS have been characterized by various instrumental techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), water contact angle (WCA) measurements. FTIR and PXRD measurements confirm the formation of CPs whereas the FE-SEM images of suberic acid polymer (SUAP) reveal compact distribution of sphere-like aggregates. WCA measurements showed that the bare MS including CPs coatings on MS up to methylene spacers length m = 4 is hydrophilic in nature; however, the coating of longest methylene spacers length CP (SUAP, m = 6) showed hydrophobic nature with water contact angle of ~ 108.6°. Furthermore, the obtained hydrophobic SUAP CP with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as binder was coated on MS to study its anticorrosion behavior for the protection of MS. The anticorrosion performance of the developed SUAP coating was investigated by open-circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The corrosion rate has been calculated from potentiodynamic polarization curves for the bare MS and SUAP coated MS showed significant improvement in the anticorrosion behavior of the developed SUAP coating.
