Revêtements décoratifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Solid-state lighting in the form of light emitting diode lamps is quickly taking over the world as replacements for existing lower efficiency lamps. The lighting standards, which phased in from 2012 to 2014, do not ban incandescent or any specific lamp type, but they do require that lamps need to use about 25% less energy. The bipartisan Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) established these efficiency standards. Many commercial lamps meet these new standards, including halogen incandescent filament, CFLs, and LEDs. The new bulbs provide a wide range of choices in color and brightness, and many of them last much longer than traditional lamps. However, the spectral distribution of flux from some of these new lamps do not match or even correspond to the spectral power distribution of traditional office and home lighting. In this review, the impact of the new lamp lights on the design, marketing, and production of modern decorative coatings is assessed. The decorative coatings industry has followed recommended guidelines for many decades, producing color-matches that are acceptable under a series of standard illuminants (D65, CWF, A) which are representative of the lamp lights in most common facilities. The new solid-state lamps do not render object colors in ways similar to the currently adopted standardized illuminants. The primary obstacle to the coatings manufacturer is the lack of standards on how to test color-matches for quality conformance under the new lamp lights. As the energy efficient lighting industry is currently still in a technologically developing phase, it appears that it will be some time before any agreements on the characteristics of modern lamp light will be reached. Therefore, guidance is provided on creating and/or using illuminant data representative of these lamps until official reference illuminants are published. The present article introduces the fundamental theories behind superhydrophobicity followed by a comprehensive review of the recent progresses of this rapidly growing field over the past 5 years. A critical discussion over anticorrosion mechanisms of superhydrophobic surfaces is also provided. For many realistic applications, future efforts are pressingly demanded to prolong the corrosion resistance of these superhydrophobic surfaces. To this end, several important strategies and examples in designing stable, self-healable, or inhibitor-loaded superhydrophobic surfaces are discussed. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Currently, anticorrosive coatings find a large number of applications and can be effectively used for corrosion protection of many corrosion-prone metals like aluminum, iron, etc. Nanocontainers have the ability to encapsulate large amounts of guest molecules within their core, and releasing them in a controlled way can aid in providing self-healing abilities to the coating, thus providing active protection. In the present study, a novel approach of synthesis of nanocontainers using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and corrosion inhibitor 2-mercaptobenzothiazole has been discussed with their applications in corrosion protection of mild steel (MS). It is a three-step procedure involving layer-by-layer deposition of the CNT, inhibitor, and polyelectrolytes, which thus provides enhanced corrosion protection when coated on MS plates. The thickness of the layer, surface charge, and functional groups present on each layer were identified using various analytic techniques such as particle size distribution, zeta potential, and FTIR analysis. X-ray diffractograms analyses of CNT and modified CNT were performed to evaluate their crystallographic properties. The morphological and particle size clearly indicate the development of a nanocontainer. The corrosion rate analysis of nanocontainer-epoxy coatings on MS panel has been performed by means of salt spray and DC polarization measurements. The corrosion resistance was measured after the immersion of the coated samples in alkali solution. Réduction (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this article, we present the synthesis of small silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with an average size of 1–20(50) nm. Three formulations of AgNPs-based materials have been obtained and characterized by varying the weight ratio of the silver nitrate/acrylic polymer. AgNPs were prepared by simple chemical reduction method. The reduction of AgNO3 was done by sodium borohydride in the presence of acrylic polymer, which acts also as a capping agent of AgNPs, avoiding the use of additional protective agents. The elemental analysis of AgNPs was quantified by X-ray fluorescence. The morphology and size of AgNPs were characterized by SEM and TEM–HRTEM, while the colloidal stability of AgNPs was demonstrated by zeta potential measurements. The influence of acrylic polymer on the stability of AgNPs, the particle sizes, and their antimicrobial efficacy was investigated. The results confirm that the introduction of acrylic polymer during the synthesis, acting as a stabilizing agent, increases the colloidal stability and antimicrobial performances of these formulations. Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Organoclays modified by two different pillaring agents were introduced in polybenzoxazine (PBz) coatings on mild steel (MS). Both physicochemical properties and corrosion protection performance of composite coatings were fully investigated with the assistance of FTIR, XRD, AFM, SEM, and electrochemical measurements. The octadecyl quaternary ammonium-modified organoclays exhibited an exfoliated structure in polymer matrix, which benefited little in coatings’ barrier property. However, organoclays modified by dimethyl dioctadecyl quarternary ammonium induced an intercalated structure in composites, which greatly enhanced the corrosion resistance of poly(BA-aptms) with corrosion rate reduced by 3 and 4 orders of magnitude, respectively, compared to PBz and bare MS when 3 wt% of organoclays were added. Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An ambient-temperature self-crosslinkable acrylic resin was synthesized by solution polymerization, with ethanol as solvent; butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylic acid (AA), hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA), and diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) as monomers; and adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) as crosslinker. The resin could be diluted by water. The resin was used for PE film ink, and its curing behavior and film properties were studied. FTIR and DSC results indicated that the reaction between ketone carbonyl and hydrazine groups could occur during film curing at ambient temperature and improved glass transition temperature (T g) of the film by 12.67°C. Crosslinking density of film increased with DAAM content and m(ADH)/m(DAAM) ratio. Adhesion on PE film increased with DAAM content, while it first increased then decreased with m(ADH)/m(DAAM) ratio. Water absorption of film decreased with DAAM content, while it first decreased then increased with m(ADH)/m(DAAM) ratio. The optimal m(ADH)/m(DAAM) ratio and DAAM content in this experiment are 0.8:1 and 2%, respectively. Compared with ambient-temperature self-crosslinkable emulsion, this water-soluble resin shows film not only with the same adhesion, but also without any shrinkage void, indicating better film-forming ability on PE film. The ambient-temperature self-crosslinkable water-soluble acrylic resin shows excellent potential application in water-based ink for PE film because of good film-forming ability and adhesion and low water absorption. Stabilité thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Styrene-acrylic copolymer latexes were synthesized by emulsion polymerization process using sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate (SFS) and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as redox initiators. Approximately 100% conversion was achieved successfully at 50°C. The redox polymerization was carried out at varied dosages of redox concentration; the lowest dosage of 0.3% was sufficient to achieve ~100% conversion. The molecular weight of the polymer was decreased with an increase in redox concentration as expected. The properties such as viscosity, specific conductivity, particle size, molecular weight, and Tg (by differential scanning calorimetric and dynamic mechanical analysis) of the redox polymers are reported. The other important property of the latexes is their freeze–thaw (F–T) stability. Even though ~100% conversion was achieved at 0.3% redox initiator couple, it failed in F–T stability test. Latexes prepared above 0.5% redox initiator couple successfully pass the five F–T cycles. The effect of sulfate from SFS, and tertiary butyl from TBHP species on the stability of the latexes is discussed. The F–T stability of the emulsions is very crucial in the coatings industry, and this article brings some insight into the effect of concentration of redox species on the stability of emulsions. Moreover, low-temperature processes are always appreciated in terms of safety and energy savings. The nanopigments extracts in the 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were prepared. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization (LP) techniques were utilized to investigate the corrosion inhibition properties of the pigments in the solutions containing pigments extracts. The epoxy nanocomposites were prepared and applied on the aluminum specimens. EIS and pull-off measurements were performed to characterize the corrosion protection properties of the epoxy nanocomposites. It was revealed that the MnAl2O4 pigment showed higher corrosion inhibition properties than CoAl2O4 in the solution phase. In addition, MnAl2O4 enhanced the corrosion resistance and decreased the adhesion loss of the epoxy coating on the aluminum substrate significantly. The MnAl2O4 nanopigment improved the corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating through increasing the barrier performance and releasing inhibitive species.

Dodecylphosphonic acid (DDPA) layers were formed on periodic micro-column-patterned Al surfaces by a rapid dip-coating in a 2 mM DDPA solution in trichloroethylene. It was demonstrated that DDPA layers were derived on Al substrates in a couple of seconds and superhydrophobic Al surfaces were achieved with water static contact and sliding angles of 153° and 5°, respectively. Atomic force microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements showed that multilayer and island structural DDPA layers were formed on Al substrates. XPS analyses demonstrated that DDPA headgroups were connected with Al by P–O–Al bonds which contributed to the excellent durability of the superhydrophobic Al surfaces. The effects of SMP on the hydrophobicity and water uptake behavior and on the corrosion resistance provided by the coatings were examined using contact angle measurements, glass-transition temperatures, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The water uptake behavior of silicone–epoxy coatings with higher SMP content decreased to a greater extent for coatings with higher hydrophobicity. The anticorrosion protection of 2024 Al-alloy by silicone–epoxy coatings containing SMP correlated well with their water uptake and hydrophobicity. vision des couleursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The blackness perception of six black automotive finishes was evaluated under three different illumination conditions: unidirectional illumination, diffuse illumination and light booth condition. The metallic black panels with approximately the same appearance attributes, specular gloss, distinctness of image and orange peel, were selected to minimize the effect of total appearance factors on perceived blackness. Fourteen non-expert observers (5 males and 9 females) assessed the black panels while their normal color vision was examined by the Ishihara test. The pair comparison method was applied to rank the metallic black panels based on their perceived blackness. The results showed that under the diffuse illumination condition, a good correlation was observed between the lightness attribute of metallic black panels and their visual scales, where a decrease of the L* value leads to an increase of perceived blackness. In addition, observers assessed the darkest and the most neutral panel as the blackest sample under the three applied illumination conditions. Note de contenu : - Samples preparation

Revêtements protecteurs -- DétériorationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The protective effects of a topcoat on an intumescent fire-retardant coating were studied under hydrochloric acid solution corrosion, accelerated UV aging and natural weathering. The protective effects were determined to be appreciable under all the aging conditions. During hydrochloric acid corrosion testing, the coating sample without the topcoat exhibited no fire resistance after immersion for 48 h. When a topcoat was used, the acid solution could not directly corrode the fire-retardant coating. However, the solution was observed to seep into the coating layer from the edges, demonstrating that special attention must be paid to the edges and corners to avoid the pollution source corroding the coating and substrate. Under the accelerated UV aging conditions, the fire-resistant properties of the unprotected coating deteriorated significantly after 20 days of aging due to the hydrolysis and photooxidation of the components. However, the coating with a topcoat exhibited better fire-proof properties, even after 40 days of aging. During the natural weathering process, the fire resistance of the coating without a topcoat significantly decreased after being exposed to the high levels of precipitation and UV radiation that occur during summer. The fire-resistant properties were completely lost after 1 year of aging exposure. However, the protected sample exhibited no distinct changes in the duration of fire resistance. The results of this study remind engineering personnel to pay attention to the deterioration of the coating properties and to take protection measures. Despite slightly decreasing the fire resistance performance and increasing the cost, the protective effect of the topcoat was remarkable. Therefore, a compatible topcoat is considered indispensable for fire-retardant coatings used outdoors to ensure the best long-term fire resistance performance. Index. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Epoxy-based nanocomposite coatings were formulated by incorporating various types of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) (ZrO2, ZnO, Fe2O3, and SiO2). The effect of the incorporation of various NPs on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of these epoxy coatings has been studied. A facile direct incorporation technique has been utilized for the dispersion of the NPs in the epoxy matrix via high-speed mechanical stirring and ultra-sonication using acetone as a solvent. The incorporation of these NPs augmented the mechanical and thermal properties of the epoxy coatings. The results revealed that the incorporation of small amount of these NPs improved the mechanical properties of the coating in all cases, with the SiO2-reinforced sample being relatively better in both mechanical and thermal properties. The incorporation of Fe2O3 and ZnO resulted in a decrease in the thermal stability and glass transition temperature (T g) of the coatings, while incorporation of SiO2 and ZrO2 increased the thermal stability as well as T g of the coatings. A notable increase of 71% in hardness together with 26% increase in the elastic modulus of the epoxy coating was observed with the incorporation of 2 wt% SiO2 NPs. SmectiteIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Hybrid organic/inorganic coatings provide effective barriers to gas transmission and therefore find utility in a variety of application areas, including surface treatment of foams for thermal insulation purposes. Blends of aqueous latexes with select smectite clays are particularly attractive, in that the efficient formation of layered interconnecting networks occurs upon drying. The plate-like structure of clays enables this behavior at relatively low volumetric content of inorganic material. A variety of both natural and synthetically derived high purity clays are evaluated for their ability to form low permeability films, with effects of loading, aspect ratio, and refinement technique described. Revêtements -- Propriétés mécaniques:Peinture -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the present study, attempts were made to enhance conductivity of electrocoats (based on epoxy amine adduct) containing NH2-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The weight percent of incorporated MWCNTS into the electrocoat matrix varied in the range of 0.6–3.6 wt% to obtain a series of electrocoatings. These were then applied on steel substrates by a cathodic electrodeposition technique. Electrocoated films were characterized utilizing scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The results illustrated that electrical conductivity was enhanced by increasing of the MWCNT load. At the percolation threshold, throwing power was dropped while the recoating ability was enhanced. Mechanical behavior of nanocomposites containing MWCNTs in the range of 0–2.8 wt% was investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and nanoindentation test methods. DMTA analysis revealed that the width of tan δ was increased by the addition of nanotubes up to 2.8 (wt%). Also, the results obtained from the nanoindentation test showed that the elastic modulus and hardness of the nanocomposites were decreased by the addition of MWCNTs. Revêtement antirefletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : To improve the power conversion efficacy of organic photovoltaics (OPVs), it is required to design antireflection structures that could realize efficient and broadband light trapping. In this article, we perform global optimization of the textured pattern of moth eye antireflection surfaces to maximize the short-circuit current density (J SC) of OPVs with a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)-based bulk heterojunction. We introduce an optimization algorithm consisting of two steps: in the first step, the simple grid search is conducted to roughly estimate a globally optimal solution, while in the second step, the Hooke and Jeeves pattern search is executed to refine the solution. By combining the optimization algorithm with the optical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain method, we find the optimal period and height of moth eye array with which the level of J SC can be increased by 9.05% in the P3HT:PCBM-based organic solar cell. We also demonstrate that the optimized moth eye structure can significantly modify the light path at a long wavelength range to strengthen the electric field intensity and enhance energy absorption within the active layer.
