Achieving optimal performance in these materials requires an under-standing of how particle morphology affects film formation and stress development in the film. In this study, soft-core/hard-shell latex particles with different shell ratios, core and shell glass transition temperatures(Tgs), and particle sizes (63–177 nm) were synthesized using a two-stage emulsion polymerization. The film formation behavior of the composite particles was investigated with cryogenic scanning electron micro-scopy, atomic force microscopy, and measurements of the minimum film formation temperature (MFFT). Results show that film formation was enhanced for particles with thinner hard shells, smaller particle size, and a smaller difference in Tg between the core and shell polymers. For example, the MFFT decreased and the particle deformation increased for particles with thinner shells and smaller article sizes. Stress development during drying was characterized using a cantilever beam bending technique. A walled cantilever design was used to monitor stress development without the complication of a lateral drying front. The film formation behavior and stress development correlated well with practical paint properties like scrub resistance and gloss. The overall objective of this research was to develop organic nanoparticles-reinforced UV-water-based coatings for wood applications and to study the effect, mainly on wear properties, of the final composite coatings. CNC was mixed in the varnishes to improve the mechanical properties of the
coatings. One of the key aspects in the technology of nanocomposites remains the dispersion of the nanoparticles within the matrix as well as its affinity with the matrix. To quantify the dispersion, efficient methods of characterization are needed in order to reveal the nanosized particles. In this article, a novel characterization method based on atomic force microscopy was employed to characterize such nanocomposite coatings, by measuring surface nanoroughness, which is clearly correlated with quality of dispersion and mechanical properties. CNC was modified by either alkyl quaternary ammonium bromides or acryloyl chloride. The mechanical properties (abrasion and scratch resistances, hardness and adhesion) were analyzed and compared to the reference varnish without nanoparticles. The modified CNC addition in UV-water-based coatings results in an approximately 30–40% increase in wear resistance (abrasion and scratch), without any loss of appearance.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Waterborne coating - CNC - CNC dispersion characterization

Vernis -- DéfautsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In the present study, attempts were made to develop an index of geometric appearance capable of accurately predicting and quantifying the visually perceived geometric aspects of appearance of achromatic automotive finishes. To this end, three previously prepared individual scales for the three most significant geometric appearance attributes, namely specular gloss, distinctness of image (DOI), and orange peel for each of a series of metallic black, metallic gray, metallic silver, and solid white automotive finishes were utilized. The differences in each attribute were quantified visually by a panel of 16 observers, in terms of a lightness difference of an also previously prepared lightness scale. The innovative use of a common lightness scale showed that there is a surprisingly good correlation between the instrumentally measured specular gloss, DOI, and the LW parameter of the Wave scan instrument and the corresponding visually evaluated equivalents at the four investigated achromatic levels through minimizing observer errors and enhancing accuracy of the perceptibility procedure. These high accuracies made provisions for the implementation of the principle of additivity which led to the derivation of a geometric appearance index (GAI).
However, before its derivation, one instrumentally measured parameter was remodeled exponentially to define an innovative parameter chosen to be named "percent absence of orange peel". The proposed GAI illustrates high correlation with visual assessments and is herewith recommended as a stand-alone index for predicting the geometric appearance of automotive finishes. Furthermore, this index together with a
chromatic appearance index could form the foundation for deriving a total appearance index for the automotive industry.Note de contenu : - Preparation of appearance attribute scales

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Schiff base epoxy resin was used as a component of self-stratifying compositions, in which different acrylic resins were used. The degree of stratification was determined using the ATR FTIR spectroscopy and microscopy technique. Results were compared with those for commercial epoxy resins with a comparable epoxy number. A determination was made of the mechanical properties of the coatings obtained. Based on the previous studies, it was concluded that Schiff base epoxy resin in a film-forming composition behaves in a similar manner to BPA-based epoxy resins. The best mechanical properties and a high degree of stratification were achieved using a Schiff base epoxy resin/poly(isobutyl methacrylate) composition. Use of a self-stratifying composition not only reduces the time and cost of preparing a multilayer coating system, thanks to the formation of two layers in one application, but also causes the Schiff based epoxy coatings to become more flexible. ZéolitesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The anticorrosive properties of a silane–zeolite composite coating applied on a 6061 aluminum substrate was investigated. The composite film, deposited by dip-coating technique, was prepared with different contents of SAPO34 powder (60–90 wt%) with the purpose of evaluating the protective action offered by the zeolite-filled silane matrix. Corrosion protection performance, during immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution, was evaluated by means of a potentio-dynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The coating evidenced good barrier properties and high hydrophobicity. The addition of zeolite in the silane matrix induced, as expected, a reduction of cathodic and anodic current. The zeolite improved the barrier properties of the hybrid sol–gel films, enhancing the resistance to localized corrosion attacks. Better results were observed for the sample with 80 wt% of zeolite filler that evidenced still acceptable protective action after 3 days of immersion in the sodium chloride solution. Waterborne acrylic and polyurethane resins were employed as matrix, and hydrophilic or organically modified nanoparticles of montmorillonite as reinforcement. Emphasis in this article is put on the preparation of the coating. An overview of the major steps involved is presented. The choice of a suitable solvent for the preparation stage is based on the values of the solubility parameters of the constituents. The characterization techniques that are used include X-ray diffraction analysis, gas permeation measurements, and IR spectroscopy. The results highlight the significance of the selection of appropriate ingredients and the knowledge of the interactions between the clay particles, the organic matrix, and the solvents used for the preparation of the coating. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An alicyclic epoxy resin was modified with a copolymer having both a perfluoroalkyl side chain and a cyclohexenoxide-terminated side chain. The copolymer had a good solubility in the epoxy matrix during the reaction of the alicyclic epoxy groups on the terminal end of the side chains. Thus, the cured epoxy resin had a homogeneous phase structure and was a colorless material with excellent transparency. The fluorinated side chains were highly self-segregated in the air-side surface (thickness : less than 8 nm) to minimize the interfacial free energy between the air and cured epoxy resin. The surface of the epoxy coatings had a significantly low surface free energy (ca. 20 mJ/m2) and revealed both high hydro- and oleophobicities. In addition, the surface had a gradient in the refractive index due to the self-stratification of the C–F bond that has a low polarizability. Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of ambient self-crosslinkable acrylic resin/protein composite emulsions (PA–Ps) were prepared by copolymerizing the functional monomer acetyl acetylethyl methacrylate (AAEM) with methyl acrylate, butyl acrylate and acrylic acid, and then protein crosslinking agents such as gelatin and casein were also added. The PA–P films were characterized by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, contact angles, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, antisolvent testing and physicomechanical testing. Influences of AAEM and protein dosages on properties of composite films were examined in detail. The results indicate that influences of AAEM and protein on PA–P films are diverse on solvent resistance, physicomechanical properties and thermal properties. With enhancement of AAEM and protein dosages, hardness, solvent resistance to tetrahydrofuran and glass transition temperature (Tg) of PA–P films are markedly enhanced, but the decomposing temperatures (Td) are decreased. Tensile strengths are evidently reinforced while elongations at break are lessened. Suitable AAEM and protein dosages could render PA–P films with good water resistance. In general, all coatings showed ability to bind to the stone and tile surfaces, and polymer-based coatings expressed stronger adhesion compared to a small-molecule fluorinated phosphate coating. Also, anionic fluorinated polymers containing methacrylic acid (MAA) residues in the ammonium carboxylate form adhered more strongly compared to corresponding acidic polymer counterparts. In addition, anionic fluorinated polymers, shown to adhere more strongly to granite than marble, possibly due to strong Lewis acid-base interaction between carboxylate and aluminosilicates. Conversely, the fluorinated polymers, bearing the MAA side-chains in their free-acid form, bound more strongly to marble via possible Brønsted acid-base interactions between carboxylic acid and calcium carbonate. Lastly, in most cases, comparable fracture thresholds were observed for the same coating material on different substrates. This was expected since fracture threshold is a measure of the mechanical strength of the coating material, independent of the substrate difference. Pigments métalliquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Effect pigments were originally developed to realize advanced optical effects by coating on several types of material surfaces. However, metallic effect pigments are expected to be valuable for many other applications, such as antimicrobial effects, electrical conductive coatings, or shielding against radio waves (electromagnetic shielding). Accordingly, the aim of this article is to evaluate the advanced properties which can be realized by application of coatings containing metallic effect pigments onto textile materials leading to new functional textiles. In total, four different metallic effect pigments were investigated and compared to silver and graphite pigments. By application of coatings with copper- or silver-containing effect pigments significant antibacterial properties against E.coli and S.aureus can be realized. To achieve electric conductive textiles, which also enable effective shielding against radio waves, a copper pigment carrying a silver coating leads to the best properties. Altogether, an effective coating method is presented to achieve functional textiles that offer a broad range of possible applications. The results showed that the obtained polyacrylate miniemulsion had a high monomer conversion rate and a low coagulum fraction, which were affected little by the surfactant and cosurfactant type. When the surfactant and cosurfactant amounts were all 2 wt%, the contact angle of the prepared polyacrylate miniemulsion with DNS-86/SMA and the water absorption fraction of the latex film were 39° and 8.3 wt%, respectively. FTIR results confirmed that DNS-86 and SMA took part in the polymerization of acrylate monomers. In the miniemulsion polymerization of acrylate monomers with DNS-86/SMA, monomer droplet nucleation was the main nucleation style. Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Currently, galvanized steel is treated with hexavalent chrome passivation. Sol–gel coating has been found to be a potential replacement for the hazardous hexavalent chrome passivation treatment. The aim of this work is to study the effect of zirconyl nitrate on corrosion behavior of sol–gel coating. Aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane were employed as precursors to prepare the sol–gel-based silane coating. The sol–gel film was deposited on galvanized steel sheet by dip coating method. The chemical properties of sol–gel solution and coated films were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy. Morphology of the film was characterized by scanning electron microscope. The corrosion resistance of the coated samples was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization curve, and salt spray test. The results indicated that zirconia-doped coatings have better corrosion resistance in comparison with their undoped counterparts. The coating doped with 0.5% zirconyl nitrate provides better corrosion protection due to the inhibitive action of zirconia ion. Surfaces (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Solar thermal heaters are used widely in domestic and industrial applications. The main part of solar thermal heaters is the absorber surface which must have a maximum absorptivity (α) and minimum emissivity (ε) of solar radiation. This is achieved by application of selective coating on the absorber surface. In the present work, solar selective CuCoMnO x spinel films are deposited by sol gel technique using a dip-coating technique on copper and aluminum sheets. The precursor’s ratio Co:Cu:Mn applied is 1:3:3. Different precursor molar ratios were combined with a fixed amount of solvents for the coating process. Process parameters such as withdrawal rate, heat treatment, and substrate materials on the coat characteristics and optical properties were studied. The coated metallic samples were heat treated at 450°C for 30 min in the case of aluminum and at 200°C at different times in the case of copper. Optical properties of the coatings, namely absorptivity (α) and emissivity (ε) were measured and the deposition process parameters were optimized in order to produce the maximum selectivity (α/ε) values. The deposition parameters were found to influence both the thickness and surface roughness of the coatings. As the coating thickness decreases, the absorptivity increases while the emissivity decreases irrespective of the substrate material. It was also observed from the results that when applying the coat on aluminum substrates, a maximum selectivity value of (α/ε) = 31 was realized while for the copper substrates a maximum value of (α/ε) = 81.8 was obtained. The deposited coatings were analyzed using SEM, XRD, and AFM. Note de contenu : - METHODOLOGY

StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coated wood surfaces of components constituting flooring and furniture for interior end uses that exhibit good tribological properties are highly desirable. Surfaces of yellow birch wood (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) were protected with six different types of multilayer coatings (MCs) developed in this study. Each MC consisted of three layers: primer, sealer, and topcoat. UV-curable primer and topcoat formulations were, respectively, reinforced with a hydrophobic fumed silica (NS: 0 and 0.5 wt% in the formulation) and nanoclay (NC: 0, 1, and 3 wt% in the formulation). The scratch resistance of MCs on wood surfaces conditioned at 40% and 80% relative humidity (RH) was quantitatively and qualitatively studied. Quantitative evaluation was performed according to a standardized scratch test, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was used for qualitative evaluation. Statistical results have shown that NS, NC, and NS × NC do not have a significant effect on scratch resistance of coated wood surfaces, whereas the effect of RH is significant. Regardless of RH, SEM images reveal that: (i) there is no sign of lack of adhesion between coating layers and the MCs/wood surfaces interface and (ii) all the MCs seem to have a ductile/brittle response to scratching. Qualitative information was in accordance with quantitative results.
RéticulantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Pigmented (TiO2), amino resin crosslinked coatings, designed for applications in can coatings’ internal lacquers, were formulated, characterized, applied, and cured. Three grades of a pigmentary form of TiO2 were characterized in terms of their particle size, their particle morphology, their zeta potential, and their moisture retention behavior. Epoxy coatings that were crosslinked using one of several, different amino crosslinkers were prepared. The effect of the presence of the TiO2 pigments on the hydrolysis of the cured coatings was monitored via the controlled retorting of the coatings. The different grades of TiO2 pigment were selected, to establish whether or not they could be used interchangeably with respect to hydrolysis and to melamine release. Also, the effects of the aging of the fluid coatings on the amount of melamine released from the coatings (after curing and retorting) were monitored. Storage under laboratory conditions for 2, 20, and 40 weeks was used for this purpose. The TiO2 pigment contributed significantly to the hydrolysis behavior of the epoxy coatings in that their presence substantially reduced the amount of melamine released and the extent of crosslinker hydrolysis. Typical results show that excluding the TiO2 pigment particles from the formulation results in there being 50% more hydrolysis of the crosslinker to melamine. With respect to the melamine release and crosslinker hydrolysis, the different grades of the pigment gave similar results. ThermochimieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The potential of mean force (PMF) is the total free energy of a many-body colloidal system, and consequently it includes all the interactions the colloids experience due to collisions with themselves and with the solvent. Here, the PMF of a colloidal dispersion under various circumstances of current interest, such as varying solvent quality, polymer coating thickness, and addition of electrostatic interaction, is obtained from radial distribution functions available from the literature. They are based on implicit-solvent, computer simulation studies of a model TiO2 dispersion that takes into account three major components to the interaction between colloidal particles, namely van der Waals attraction, repulsion between polymer coating layers, and a hard-core particle repulsion. In addition, a screened form of the electrostatic interaction was included. It is argued that optimal conditions for dispersion stability can be derived from a comparative analysis of the PMF under the different situations studied. This thermodynamics-based analysis is believed to be more accessible to specialists working on the development of improved colloidal formulations than that based on the more abstract, radial distribution functions.
