Soyate de sucroseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Highly functional sucrose soyate polyol (SSP) resins were synthesized by ring-opening epoxidized sucrose soyate with methanol or ethanol and were subsequently crosslinked with a melamine–formaldehyde (MF) resin in the presence of an acid catalyst or blocked acid catalyst. The biobased polyols were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Brookfield viscosity, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The thermal properties of the biobased MF coatings were studied using differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. As controls, a soybean oil polyol (SBOP) with lower functionality and a commercial polyester polyol were studied for comparison. Overall, MF coatings formulated with SSPs showed superior properties to coatings formulated with SBOP and comparable properties to the commercial polyester which was attributed to the high hydroxyl functionality.

ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A lead-free graphite conducting paste was prepared by using graphite powder, lead-free barium boron low-melting glass and ethyl cellulose solution. By analyzing the sheet resistance, Vickers hardness as well as the adhesion strength of the fired film prepared by the pastes formulated with different composition, the composition of the paste with preferable properties was evaluated in weight percent: organic vehicle 60, graphite powder 15–20, and low-melting glass 20–25. The films, prepared by the pastes using the lead-free glass with a glass transition temperature of 476°C, were perfectly flat and compact after fired at a peak temperature within the range of 540 to 590°C. The sheet resistance of the fired film with glass content of 25 wt% was 135 ?/mm2 at the film thickness of 25 ± 3 ?m, while the Vickers hardness was 12.3 N/mm2 and the adhesion strength to soda lime silicate glass substrate was 45.6 N/mm2. In addition, the rheological, thixotropic, and viscoelasticity behaviors of the typical paste were characterized and the effects on the screen-printing ability were analyzed in detail. It is found that a slight flocculated network structure is formed in the paste at rest, but the flocculated structure is very slight due to the steric effect of the ethyl cellulose macromolecules and good dispersing. The rheological, thixotropic, and viscoelasticity behaviors of the typical paste were similar to those of the screen-printing pastes with a high solid content of filler.

VernisIndex. décimale : 667.7 Cires, laques, vernis Résumé : A type of antigraffiti polyurethane clearcoat was prepared and characterized. Polymethylsiloxane grafted by fluorocarbon side chains (PSF) was first synthesized through hydrosilylation of polymethylhydrosiloxane with dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate. Hydroxyl fluoroacrylate resins with different hydroxyl contents were synthesized via free radical-initiated solution polymerization and further applied to prepare polyurethane clearcoats. The synthesized polymers were structurally characterized by using Fourier transform infrared and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance. The prepared polyurethane clearcoats underwent contact angle measurement, dynamic thermal mechanical analysis, nanoscratch experiments, and atomic force microscopy. The results reveal that low surface energy, high crosslink density, low coefficient of friction, and low roughness were jointly beneficial to antigraffiti properties. Antigraffiti testing was carried out on the clearcoat with 8.0 wt% PSF and 2.0 wt% active silicone fluid, and this clearcoat showed high resistance to acrylic spray paint, permanent markers, and other graffiti materials. TriéthoxysilaneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV-curable antibacterial organic–inorganic hybrid coatings were prepared by sol–gel method. Triethoxysilane-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (TESi-PDMS) as a new coupling agent to improve the compatibility between organic and inorganic phases was synthesized. PDMS-based urethane methacrylate oligomer was obtained by reacting isophorone diisocyanate with hydroxyethyl methacrylate and hydroxyl-terminated PDMS. The formulations were applied onto polycarbonate panels and then cured by UV radiation. Physical properties of UV-cured free films such as gel content, stress–strain, and conversion of acrylate double bond were examined. In addition, the antibacterial effects of the coatings were investigated. Nanosilver-containing formulations exhibited high antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that thermal stability of the hybrids was significantly higher than the organic polymer. Contact angle measurement showed that addition of silane precursor increased the contact angle from 95° to 110°.
Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyacrylate/silica nanocomposite latexes were prepared by silica sol and facilely modified with a silane coupling agent ?-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-570) aimed at reinforcing the interaction between silica nanoparticles and latex particles in a convenient way. The effects of silica sol and KH-570 amounts on the performance of latexes and films are discussed. Particle size and morphology tests demonstrated that the silica nanoparticles could form hydrogen bond interactions between latex particles, and thus influence the rheological properties of latexes. Tensile measurements and SEM photographs showed the reinforcing and toughening roles of silica nanoparticles. SEM images also indicated that the addition of silica sol increased the roughness of films, which resulted in the increase of hydrophilic silanol groups on the film surface and the decrease of water resistance of latex films. The latex films retained good adhesion force, flexibility, and impact resistance even when the silica sol content was as much as 25%. TGA data revealed that the incorporation of silica sol enhanced the thermal stability of the films. After introducing KH-570, the particle size increased with the increase of the amount of KH-570. Moreover, the addition of KH-570 improved the water resistance and maintained other properties of the latex films appropriately. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The catechol functional group of dopamine (3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine) forms a strong coordinate bond with both inorganic and organic substrates in a wet environment. The nonfouling surfaces required for this process are typically prepared through the immobilization of poly(ethylene glycol), so-called, PEGylation. In this work, polyaspartamides containing adhesive catechol and methoxy PEG pendants were synthesized from polysuccinimide through successive aminolysis reactions. The adhesion and crosslinking of the polyaspartamide derivatives in pH-controlled aqueous media was successfully utilized to modify a glass surface using a simple immersion method. Contact angle, ?-step profiler, SEM and EDS, XPS, and AFM were used to characterize and verify the surface coating. In addition, the biocompatibility and antifouling properties of the modified surface were elucidated with a cell viability test, and a protein adsorption experiment, respectively. This biocompatible polymer system has biomedical application potential for use in adhesives and the surface coating of various biomaterials. RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) is an ambient crosslinking monomer that, when incorporated into architectural coatings binders, provides coatings with improved hardness, scrub, stain, and dirt pick-up resistance. This study details the use of NMR spectroscopy to explore the hydrolysis profile of AAEM as a function of pH, type of neutralizer, and glass transition temperature of the binder. We have determined that AAEM has a hydrolysis profile that is independent of latex polymer pH relevant to coatings (pH 7–10). Lower T g latex polymers enable the diffusion of ammonia into the binder nanoparticles converting a larger amount of the acetoacetoxy moiety to the enamine form; this approach also allows for measuring the distribution of enamine and AAEM form in the latex polymer particle. The consequence of these findings is that AAEM may be utilized at a lower pH than previously envisioned without consequence to the hydrolysis profile of the acetoacetoxy functionality. PoudresIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Wetting is the first step in the dispersion process of any powder. Understanding how the powder surface and the liquid properties affect the speed and intensity of the wetting process provides a set of tools to determine the dispersion efficiency as a whole, and an effective dispersion allows the reduced use of the powder to achieve the specified final properties. This article reports experimental results on the wetting behavior of five different TiO2 samples by liquids with different values of surface tension [deionized (DI) water and DI water containing surfactants] and its effect on the dispersion process. The selection of the TiO2 samples was based on different particles sizes with similar surface properties, and similar sizes with different surface properties. The samples were characterized in terms of their specific surface area and particle size distribution. The wetting behavior was evaluated by a capillary rise technique (Washburn) to measure liquid penetration height and rate, and the time evolution of the particle size distribution. The results show that larger particles presented faster wettability and that liquids with lower surface tension facilitate the wetting of the powder. The energy required to deagglomerate the powder is inversely proportional to the wetting speed: the faster the wetting the easier it will be to disperse the particles, with less energy required. The copolymer composition was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. In addition, the mass fractions of 2-(perfluoroalkyl)ethyl methacrylate (FMA) incorporated in the copolymers were calculated according to the relative intensity of characteristic peaks in the 1H-NMR spectrum. The prepared hydrophobic MMA floor coatings were analyzed for their coating properties such as viscosity, pot life, dry time, hardness, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, tensile strength, chemical resistance, and contact angle. Accordingly, the influence of the copolymer molecular weight and that of the incorporated amount of FMA in the copolymers were studied. Results show that coatings prepared using the copolymers with a molecular weight of 52,000 exhibit excellent comprehensive properties. Moreover, the contact angle of the coating films prepared increases as the incorporated amount of FMA increases, reaching the maximum value of 103° for 13%. It was demonstrated that the mercapto groups were successfully grafted onto the nanosilica surface with the grafting ratio of 16.8% and the mercapto groups content of 0.9 mmol/g. The dispersion and self-aggregation of nanosilica in UV curable coatings were improved significantly. The photopolymerization kinetics of UV curable coatings, containing various amounts of nanosilica and modified nanosilica, were evaluated by the photo differential scanning calorimetry technique. This indicated that nanosilica both before and after modification decreased UV curing speed and ultimate percentage conversion; however, in comparison with the coatings containing unmodified nanosilica, the coatings containing modified nanosilica exhibited higher curing speeds and conversion ratios. It can be ascribed that the mercapto groups on the nanosilica surface reduced oxygen inhibition during the UV curing process via the thiol–ene click reaction. The mechanical properties of UV curable coatings were also compared.

Reaction rates are calculated, and reaction kinetics are studied. Furthermore, Gaussian programs are used to calculate steric configuration and electronegativity of those two diamines. The electronegativity of TMEDA is greater than that of DABCO, but the steric hindrance of DABCO in nitrogen atom is smaller. Steric hindrance plays a more important part in reaction kinetics, which makes the reaction to be catalyzed by DABCO at a faster rate. Finally, activation energy, activation enthalpy, and activation entropy for the reaction are calculated, followed by the discussion of reaction mechanism. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The influence of structural and systematic compositional variations in glycidyl carbamate (GC) functional polymers on the electrochemical properties of their coatings was studied. There are few reports which focus on the correlation of structural and compositional variations in polymer films with their electrochemical barrier properties, diffusion properties with regards to water and aqueous electrolytes, and corrosion performance. To begin to fill this knowledge gap, two sets of GC functional polymers were studied. The polymer compositions were designed to vary the extent of polar hydrophilic groups, non-polar hydrophobic groups, and reactive epoxy groups in the final coatings. Impedance responses of the coatings were found to be closely related to the structural and compositional variations of these GC polymer films. In addition, single frequency EIS experiments were used in an attempt to understand the water uptake behavior of these polymer films using NaCl solution and ionic liquid under immersed condition. The resulting transport property data of the films was correlated to their polymer structure and composition. Moreover, a novel attempt at ranking the stability of coating using capacitance measurement during a cyclic wetting–drying condition was also attempted. The information obtained from this work can potentially be used to optimize the polymer for the specific performance properties needed in the protective coating applications, saving significant time and effort in the research and development stage. The tack measurements were conducted using a technique commonly used to measure the tack of an adhesive tape in the PSA industries. The surface free energy (SFE) values of the materials were evaluated using the Owens–Wendt and van Oss–Chaudhury–Good methods. The experiments showed a clear relationship between the SFE of the substrate and the tack of the model acrylic PSA. In general, larger differences between the SFE values of the substrate and adhesive (?SFE) were correlated with greater tack values. The tack of the model acrylic PSA was found to be optimal over the ?SFE range of 7.0–13.1 mJ/m2. The trend in the tack as a function of the SFE difference was attributed to the quantity of energy dissipated at the jointed points during the separation stage in the loop tack test. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyester polyols were synthesized using 1,6-hexanediol (HDO), 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (1,4-CHDM) and trimethylol propane (TMP), alone or in combination with 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and adipic acid. The polyester polyols were reacted with isocyanate trimers to form polyurethane (PU) coatings. Physical properties of the polyesters such as hydroxyl value, acid value, molecular weight, viscosity, and glass transition temperature (T g) had been determined, and the IR spectroscopic analyses of polyesters/PU were reported. The properties (impact resistance, film flexibility, hardness, optical transmittance, chemical resistance, water absorption, thermostability, and phase separation) of the PU coatings so prepared were characterized. The viscosities of polyester polyols were dependent on the structure of the alcohols. Polyester polyol containing only linear aliphatic diol (HDO) was a transparent liquid at room temperature. The viscosity was increased by raising the molar ratio of 1,4-CHDM and/or TMP. All PU coatings had excellent flexibility, impact resistance, and hardness. The coatings derived from diol CHDM had the highest hardness, and the PU derived from diol HDO had the lowest hardness. The chemical resistance and water absorption improved with greater molar ratios of 1,4-CHDM or TMP. Results of differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicated that there was no obvious crystallinity in the PU networks. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results revealed that both CHDM and TMP can increase the T g of PU, and the crosslinking density improved with increased molar ratio of TMP. Atomic force microscope (AFM) and DMA analysis revealed that the PU coatings had no obvious microphase separation, which enabled them to have excellent properties, and the different composition in polyols did not have significant influence on transmittance in the visible region. Results of thermogravimetric measurements indicated that all the PU coatings had good thermal stability. Electrodepositions of poly(N-methylpyrrole), poly(N-phenylpyrrole), and poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) were performed in nonaqueous medium on a poly(pryrrole)-coated copper surface using cyclic voltammetry. The morphologies of the resulting bilayered composite coatings of poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methylpyrrole), poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-phenylpyrrole), and poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Stabilities of a doping-dedoping process of the composites were determined from the cyclic voltammetric study of the bilayer-coated electrodes in a monomer-free solution. Corrosion performances of the bilayer composite-coated and uncoated copper electrodes were investigated in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution using open circuit potential–time (E ocp–t) curves, anodic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All the investigated bilayered coatings gave significant enhancement in the corrosion resistance of copper, compared to the single poly(pyrrole) coating. Stability and corrosion tests revealed that the composite material poly(pyrrole)/poly(N-methoxyphenylpyrrole) exhibited higher electrochemical stability and corrosion resistant behavior than the other bilayered composite coatings.

The nanocomposite materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To understand the effect of MMT and LDH on the corrosion inhibition performance of epoxy resin coatings immersed in 3.5 wt% saline solution at 90°C, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and an autoclave test were performed on epoxy resin; epoxy resin blended with LDH, MMT, and LDH + MMT (LM) coatings painted on Q345 steel. The metal/coating interfaces were observed by SEM and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Results showed that addition of LDH and MMT improved the protection properties of the epoxy resin coatings. The corrosion protection of the LM nanocomposite coating was superior to that of the other coatings. This finding can be attributed to the ionic selectivity and barrier effect of MMT and LDH nanoclay platelets dispersed within the composite coatings.
