ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) is a noble class of material that has drawn considerable attention due to its numerous properties such as mechanical robustness, high aspect ratio, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, water retention ability, barrier properties to oxygen, compatibility with biomaterials, biodegradability, large surface area and interesting rheology. This present work deals with the rheology of MFC suspension in water. The effect of temperature on the concentration of the suspension of MFC was studied. Three regimes of MFC were observed for the shear rate lying in the range of 0.01–1000 s−1, supported by a buildup of a network of hydroxyl groups present on the surface, resulting in shear thinning, shear thickening, and shear thinning regions, respectively. An increase in the concentration of MFC, increased viscosity, and the dominance of storage modulus were observed. A high value of storage modulus indicates a higher degree of crosslinking of fibrils. The experimental data were well fitted by using the Ostwald-de Waele power law model. The results suggested that an increase in the temperature did not have any significant effect on the MFC rheology in the temperature range of 25–60°C. The Gaussian process regression model was used to determine the performance parameters. Dynamic oscillatory measurements were performed to validate the viscoelastic behavior.
PhotocatalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Titanium dioxide (Ti02) is well known for its photocatalytic capabilities, and its applications coverl different areas, such as wastewater treatment, sunscreen and ultraviolet (UV) blocking, among others. Its application as a photocatalytic additive for self-cleaning properties has been reported with different substrates, resulting in stain degradation. As such, the goal of this work was to functionalise two types of nubuck leather, conferring on them self-cleaning properties. For this purpose, two photocatalytic materials were tested: a commercial TiO2 (Degussa P25 Ti02) and Si02@Ti02 nanoparticles, which were applied onto leather surfaces by a spray coating technique. The hydrophilic behaviour of these two types of nubuck leather was determined by contact angle (CA) measurement, using the sessile drop technique. The finished samples of nubuck leather were characterized by measuring their diffuse reflectance. The self-cleaning properties of finished nubuck leather samples were evaluated through their ability to photodegrade an organic stain, rhodamine-B dye. The P25 TiO2 and Si02@TiO2 particles did not provide self-cleaning properties for the two types of nubuck leather, indicating the need for more in-depth research on the use of these particles for self-cleaning purposes.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The surface activity of hot-dip galvanized steel was evaluated after alkaline cleaning by exposing the cleaned specimens in humid supercritical carbon dioxide, followed by extraction and quantification of the formed corrosion products. Different free alkalinities of the cleaning bath were studied to obtain information on the evolution of zinc surface activity at different levels of surface etching. Surface reactivity of uncleaned galvanized steel is restricted and local, with major contributions from grain boundaries and intermetallic particles. Formation of zinc corrosion products took place in uncleaned samples exclusively on and around these sites. Al2O3 removal by alkaline cleaning gradually increased the surface activity. The major increase in surface activity was achieved when increasing the free alkalinity from 0.5 to 4.0 mEq/L, which was shown by formation of zinc corrosion products within zinc grains. The surface activity was confirmed by applying a titanium hexafluoride pretreatment on the cleaned panels and measuring the lateral microscale uniformity of the formed layer. The uniformity increased when larger areas of galvanized steel became activated by alkaline cleaning. Reactivity of zinc is rather difficult to quantify when setting up an industrial cleaning sequence for galvanized steel. Controlled exposure of cleaned samples in humid supercritical carbon dioxide, followed by quantification of oxidized zinc, provides a straightforward method to evaluate zinc reactivity. Tribologie (technologie)Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polymer based natural fiber reinforced composites are finding their applications in almost all fields of engineering. Flexible composites are different class of composite materials finding their usage in secondary structural application such as sacrificial structures like claddings. Mechanical and tribological characterization of the newly developed composites becomes important prior to using them in any engineering application. The present study concentrates on evaluating the tensile and slurry erosive behaviour of flexible composite manufactured by reinforcing naturally available jute fiber in the form of woven fabric in the naturally available sun dried rubber sheets (NR) using compression moulding technique. ASTM D412 standard is used to evaluate the tensile properties of the proposed flexible composite and the NR sheets. The slurry erosive behaviour is assessed using Ducom slurry erosion testing machine. The results reveal that reinforcing jute with natural rubber enhances the tensile strength compared to natural rubber sheet and the wear of the proposed flexible composite is minimal due to inclusion of natural rubber which is elastic in nature. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Characterization of material properties of polymers, films, and coatings is an important component to understand and subsequently to predict performance of these materials. It is often challenging to determine material properties of thin films. Additionally, determination of material properties of polymers can be challenging if these materials do not consolidate to a solid, particularly when residual solvent is present in the sample. In this paper, we introduce Evaporative Dynamic Oscillation (EDOT), a technique that allows the characterization of rheological properties of polymers and coatings in thin film form, in situ. Results indicate that EDOT can successfully characterize drying and cure of coatings and polymeric films by monitoring viscoelastic properties of these films as a function of time and temperature.
