This change created a need to investigate the performance of coatings on these new Cu-based preservatives as compared with CCA. This study evaluated performance of a number of semitransparent deck stains on CCA, alkaline copper quat (ACQ), copper azole (CA), and untreated wood samples during 3 years of natural weathering. Coatings were evaluated for their ability to reduce water uptake, color change, checking of wood, and mildew growth and to improve general appearance of preservative-treated wood samples. Overall, Cu-amine-treated wood had on average 50% higher water uptake than CCA-treated wood samples. Although solvent-based coatings had better water repellency performance on CCA-treated and untreated wood, there was no significant difference in water-repellent effectiveness (WRE) between water-based and solvent-based coatings on ACQ- or CA-treated wood. All preservative-treated woods had less color change and better visual ratings than those of untreated wood samples. Based on image analysis which was used to determine the total area of surface checking on samples after 3 years, preservative treatments had no significant effect on reducing checking of wood while coatings reduced surface checking by 30-40%. Utilization of microencapsulation is one approach to the delivery of biocides that has not been utilized in the mainstream of antifouling paint formulations. When formulating next generation paints that utilize hydrophobic nonmetallic biocides, it is necessary to develop an understanding of the release kinetics of the compounds from model polymeric coatings in order to better develop methods for providing long term efficacy.
The biocide 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one is a nonmetallic and nonenvironmentally persistent biocide that has been registered in several countries for use as an antifouling agent and has gained approval by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The release characteristics of this biocide from copper microtubules as well as polymeric films were determined by high performance liquid chromatography.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5577

The extraction process is based on the formation of the hydrophobic complex of copper(II)-H2L, which is subsequently extracted into the non-ionic surfactant-rich phase of p-octylpolyethyleneglycolphenylether (Triton X-100) at a temperature above the cloud point temperature (CPT). The phase diagrams of the binary system, water-surfactant (Triton X-100), and of the ternary systems, water-surfactant-salt (Na2SO4), were examined. The effects of the main experimental parameters such as pH, extractant concentration and non-ionic surfactant concentration on the extraction process of copper(II) were studied. The extraction yield was found to be significantly depending on the aqueous solution pH. Copper(II) was extracted with H2L and Triton X-100 in the pH range of (3–12). From the equilibrium slope analysis method, it was suggested that the stoichiometry of the extracted complexes have a composition of 1:1 (Cu:H2L). The optimum conditions of the extraction of copper(II) have been established as the following: (1) 2 × 10–3 M extractant; (2) 5 % (m/v) surfactant ; (3) pH of 7.2 ; (4) 7 % (m/v) Na2SO4 and (5) temperature of 65°C. With this included in the experimental set-up, the copper concentration stabilizes after three weeks. The copper concentration is proportional to the amount of copper available for leaching after stabilization. These results have made us confident that this modification of ASTM D5108-90 is well adapted to copper release rate measurements.
