PP-g-GMA was used as the compatibilizer in both systems. It was observed that IFT values of both systems showed a linear decrease with increasing temperature. Also, presence of a small amount of PP-g-GMA compatibilizer in the PP phase reduced the IFT of polymeric pairs dramatically, while adding more compatibilizer had no influence on IFT, due to the saturation of the interface. The saturation concentrations of GMA in the PP phase were obtained for 0.05 wt.% and 0.025 wt.% in PP/PA6 and PP/PET systems, respectively. The IFT values of compatibilized systems were reduced by 68% for PP/PA6 and 57% for PP/PET pairs compared to non-compatibilized ones. The surface tension at cmc (Ycmc) and critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactants in aqueous solutions have been investigated. C20 values (surfactant concentration in the solution phase that will reduce the surface tension of the solvent by 20 mNm–1) were also obtained. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) and the minimum average area per surfactant molecule (Amin) at the air-water interface of Gemini surfactant decrease with increasing number of methylene moieties in the spacer and, consequently, with the enhanced hydrophilic character of the molecule. The results were discussed with particular emphasis on the effect of the length spacer on the hydrophilic character of the spacer group. The surface studies of the molecules confirm that the exothermic values of the differential enthalpy of micellization (DmicH°) decrease as the methylene moieties are lengthened. Moreover, the values of the free energy (DmicG°) and entropy (DmicS°) of micellization indicate an entropy driven phenomenon for all surfactants. The effect of length spacer on surfactant adsorption for Gemini surfactants was utilized to calculate such thermodynamic parameters as the free energy of adsorption (DadsG°) and the heat of adsorption (DadsH°). The low value of DadsH° is an evidence for the physical adsorption of anionic surfactants. The relatively large value of entropic contribution (TDadsS°) indicates that the adsorption of anionic surfactants is entropically governed. The thermodynamic properties of aqueous solutions of this ester-quat were investigated using Electrical Conductivity and SurfaceTension measurements. The corresponding parameters of micellisation were determined for each technique. Otherwise the inhibitive action of the ester-quat (12-3-3-3-12) on the corrosion behaviour of iron was investigated in HCl and H2SO4 medium by means Electrochemical Resistance and Polarisation methods. The ester-quat 12-3-3-3-12 acts as a cathodic-type inhibitor. The maximum inhibition efficiency was reached around the critical micellar concentration. The ester-quat appears to be adsorbed in the metal/liquid interface through the general mode following the Frumkin adsorption model. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : Log P Surface tension Bioaccumulation Anionic surfactant Index. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : A slow stirring method to measure log P values of water-soluble surfactants is described. Aqueous surfactant solution is equilibrated with octanol. A surface tension technique is used to determine the decrease in concentration in the aqueous phase. Interference from octanol, which is surface active, is prevented by evaporation and redissolution of the sample. For industrial surfactants this method gives a log P value that is effectively weighted according to the surface activity of the components. The test can be used to screen surfactants for a possible risk of bioaccumulation as it is generally accepted that substances with log P < 3 are unlikely to bioaccumulate. The apparent log P of an alkane sulfonate was 1.5 when a 1 g/L aqueous solution was equilibrated with an equal volume of octanol. Due to ion pair formation in the octanol phase the apparent log P decreased with concentration. As a result, the tendency to partition into octanol is likely to be less at environmentally relevant concentrations. This paper addresses ridging BLRO in clearcoats, not optical and mechanical BLRO, which are characterized by metal-flake orientation (dark/light effects) in basecoats and by distortion in substrates, respectively. Ridging BLRO is due to film thickness differences and results from Marangoni-type, surface-tension-driven flows. In this study, the effects of several parameters on BLRO are investigated experimentally. These parameters include initial film thickness, heating rate, viscosity, solvent-to-resin surface-tension ratio, and solvent volatility. The experiments clearly demonstrate three modes of BLRO flow-formation, flow-out, and reformation-that result from competing surface-tension-gradient forces (temperature- versus concentration-induced). Experimental results are used to validate a proposed BLRO mechanism and, in subsequent work, a BLRO-predicting numerical code.
