The mMMT was introduced in the amount of 0.5 wt part into a coating system based on a soya oil fatty acid and isophorone diisocyanate (100 wt parts), applied onto a wood substrate, and oxidatively cured at room temperature for 14 days. An incorporation of organophilized montmorillonite into a coating composition significantly affects its viscosity (mMMT with a higher gallery space value increases that parameter) and slightly reduces the hardness of a dry coat. Moreover, a clay nanofiller increases glass transition temperature, abrasion resistance, elasticity, and impact resistance as well as barrier properties (measured using a conventional gravimetric method and an electrochemical impedance spectroscopic test) of a cured varnish. In the case of chemical resistance to acetone, lower blistering of modified coats was found. Note de contenu : - Materials

Toxicologie cellulaireIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based contact-active antimicrobial surfaces were successfully fabricated via the spray coating method. For this purpose, firstly two separate antimicrobial polymers were synthesized by introducing alkyne functionalized quaternary ammonium salt into clickable copolymer containing 30 mol% and 5 mol% of quaternary ammonium salt on their backbones. Then, these synthesized polymers were applied to coat one surface of the neat PLA films (PLA/PEG, 90/10) at the rate of 5, 15, and 25 times, respectively. Afterward, the biocidal effect of these films was considered against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria by the way of contact-active method. It was observed that the films coated with polymer containing 30 mol% of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS), even at the lowest coating amount, showed a considerably active antimicrobial property against both bacteria. The thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of coated films were also investigated. In addition, a cytotoxicity test was performed, and it was found that the PLA film was nontoxic when it was coated with polymer containing 5 mol% of quaternary ammonium salt, even at a high coating amount. For a polymer containing 30 mol% of quaternary ammonium salt on its backbone, it was necessary to coat the films at a low rate for acceptable cytotoxicity. In conclusion, due to the contact-active behavior of covalently attached antimicrobial agents, high antibacterial activity, suitable mechanical properties, and acceptable cytocompatibility, these antimicrobial surfaces can be considered as a potential candidate for bio-based materials. Traîtements de surfaceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Active packaging materials with surface immobilized metal chelating ligands were prepared by laminated photografting technique. The resulting materials presented transition metal scavenging properties with potential application in non-migratory antioxidant active packaging materials. Photografting of functional polymer ligands is typically performed in an oxygen-free environment, requiring a nitrogen inerting step, which limits potential industrial scale-up. Laminated photografting eliminates the need for nitrogen inerting by sandwiching the monomer solution between base material and an oxygen barrier layer. In this study, we demonstrated the ability to synthesize metal chelating active packaging materials, previously prepared by standard batch photografting, using a laminated photografting technique. The polypropylene-graft-poly(acrylic acid) and polypropylene-graft-poly(hydroxamic acid) chelating films prepared by laminated photografting presented similar surface chemistry as those reported previously, as characterized by infrared spectroscopy, and presented ferric ion chelating capacity of 182 ± 29 and 89 ± 10 nmol/cm2, respectively, at pH 5.0. The reported laminated photografting represents a coating technology with potential for adaptation to roll-to-roll manufacture of metal chelating films on an industrial scale.

Protection cutanéeIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : - Objective : Barrier creams (BCs) are marketed as locally applied medical devices or cosmetic products to protect the skin from exposure to chemicals and irritants. Generally, the mechanism of action of such products is mainly due to the formation of a superficial thin film between the skin and the irritant or sensitizer, thus reducing or totally blocking the cutaneous penetration of such agents. Specifically, studies focusing on the effectiveness of commercial protective creams to prevent nickel cutaneous penetration are extremely scarce. The aim of the current work, therefore, is to evaluate the protective role of a commercially available barrier cream for nickel and compare the results with a simple moisturizing, following exposure to Ni powder.
- Methods : Marketed BCs were evaluated and tested. Human skin absorption of Ni was studied in vitro using static Franz diffusion cells.
- Results : Our results demonstrate that the application of both formulations caused a reduction of Ni inside the skin (8.00 ± 3.35 μg cm−2 for the barrier cream and 22.6 ± 12.6 μg cm−2 for the general moisturizing product), with the specialized barrier cream being statistically (p = 0.015) more efficient on forming a protective barrier, thus evidencing the importance of some ingredients in such formulations on the nickel dermal accumulation.
- Conclusions : The composition of the formulations based on film-forming or chelating agents may play an imperative role in reducing the cutaneous penetration of Ni.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Formulation - Preparation of nickel powder in synthetic sweat solution - Skin samples preparation - Skin digestion after the experiment - Analytical measurements - Statistical analysis
