Traitement thermiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Superhydrophobic materials are known for their vast range of applications and properties. We present a simple process to fabricate a superhydrophobic coating on 6061Al alloy via a route with chemical replacement and heat treatment. Through this route, a hierarchical morphology including microparticles and leaf-like microstructures was obtained and, upon modification by stearic acid, the prepared coatings show good water repellency with a water contact angle of 159.2 ± 0.3° and sliding angle of 4.5 ± 1.5°. Systematic studies have been conducted on the coatings fabricated under different processing conditions to obtain the best experimental parameters, and demonstrate the reaction mechanism and the good self-cleaning effect. The 3D simulated coating topography was characterized by Leica DCM 3D in the mesoscopic scale. Based on the topography, the simplified ideal truncated cone model and theoretical equation were obtained. According to the model, a qualitative result was drawn: the higher and sharper the convex structures are, the better is the superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, the presented process can be applied to larger, stable coatings with the controllable wettability for diverse applications. Tests d'efficacitéIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Zemea propanediol is a natural, preservative-boosting humectant for cosmetic formulations. A pure, petroleum-free diol, it offers high performance in a variety of applications and is certified 100% bio-based by the USDA BioPreferred programme. Benefits include its high purity, lack of skin irritation or sensitisation, improved humectancy and excellent sensory characteristics. Studies also have shown that Zemea propanediol can boost the efficacy of preservatives and reduce the amount of preservatives needed in formulations. The ingredient is certified natural by the Natural Products Association (NPA) and considered a derived organic ingredient under the definitions of ISO 16128-1. It can replace petroleum-based glycols such as propylene glycol, butylene glycol, and glycerin in formulations, with functions including: humectant, solvent, emollient, hand-feel modifier, among others. In this article, the efficacy of Zemea propanediol in providing a range of benefits to a sunscreen formulation was assessed. Note de contenu : - Bio-based propanediol

In the current study, a mixture made from glycerol and 1,4-butanediol (1:1, w/w), namely, urea substitute glycerol butanediol (USGB), was used instead of urea in the printing paste formulation. USGB’s abilities of moisture adsorption, swelling fibres and solubilisation to reactive dyes were compared with those of urea. The printing properties of USGB on different fabrics with reactive dyes were intensively investigated in comparison with urea and commercial 391-H. The results showed that USGB’s ability to swell viscose fibres was superior to that of urea. When the dosage of USGB was within 8-10 wt% in the printing paste, the colour yield of USGB on viscose fabrics drew near to that of urea and was higher than that of 391-H. During viscose printing of reactive blue dyes with different shades and structures, the colour performance of USGB was close to that of urea and higher than that of 391-H. Furthermore, USGB could obtain good printing effects in deep printing with Reactive Turquoise K-GL on different fabrics. Compared with urea, the content of ammonia-nitrogen and total nitrogen in the printing wastewater using USGB were greatly reduced, which is of huge significance for lowering ammonia-nitrogen emissions in the printing industry.

Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An old saying is that leather is made. And of course, how tanners' carry out the beamhouse processes is et to the final leather's properties, but that is changing. Back in the 19th Century, they didn't realise they had 21st Century technology in their hands.
Although leather probably is 'made in the beamhouse', the supply chain in the modern world means that, as Liu et al stated in a paper published recently in JALCA1, 'globalisation of production and markets for raw animal hides and finished leather products has resulted in new challenges to the hide and leather industries. The many challenges include meeting environmental restrictions, developing new processes and products and improving utilisation of waste.
The last point has led the research efforts at the ERRC to address these new challenges by developing "new uses and novel bio-based products from hides to improve prospective markets and to secure a viable future for the hides and leather industries." However, to do this the traditional beamhouse processes, such as lime and sulphide to destructively unhair, are having to be re-imagined.
With the leather industry, of course, this continuing evolution is nothing new: before lime and sulphide, arsenic and animal/bird dung were used. They were superceded, as current technologies almost certainly will be as well. Strangely, although the arsenic will not be coming back, the active ingredients in putrefying dung probably will be — that is enzymes. While in the 'good old days' the control of the enzymes was rather more miss than hit, today tanners and researchers have the technology to meet new challenges, including the need to improve and optimise processes to achieve the required quality in their final articles and to meet the requirements of environmental legislation.
