TalcIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Opacifiers and pearlising agents are widely used to improve the appearance of shower gels and shampoos. Most current opacifying and pearlising solutions are based on synthetic ingredients, such as : styrene/acrylate copolymers for opacifiers, glycol stearate derivatives with fatty amides or mica-coated with a high refractive index metal oxide coating for pearlising agents.
These synthetic ingredients are in the line of fire due to current trends towards zero-plastic and zero-nano particle products. Beides, they can also be difficult to use due to pH restrictions, need for high-temperature processes, and compatibility issues with other ingredients, particularly with cationics.
This study demonstrates that a specific natural kaolin-based solution can be used to replace synthetic opacifiers and a specific natural talc-based solution can replace conventional pearlising agents.Note de contenu : - METHODS : Formulations - Instrumental test : colour measurements - Instrumental test : opacity measurements - Panel test : pearlescence intensity measurements
- RESULTS : A new kaolinite mineral to replace synthetic opacifiers - An innovative talc mineral to replace pearlizing agents
- DISCUSSION : The innovative kaolin imparts opacity and whiteness thanks to its unique porous morphology - The talc-based talc pearlising agents imparts pearlescence thanks to controlled lamellarty

TalcIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : The relationship between PVC and CPVC is dependent on both the binder and pigments. The fluidity of the binder is a key factor in discussions of influence on CPVC with viscosity and molecular weight being the critical parameters. The data presented demonstrate that the liquid or fluid nature of alkyd binders allow for higher pigment loading than their extremely high viscosity acrylic counterparts. This pigment binding ability is not compromised when the alkyd is supplied as a surfactant stabilised latex rather than as a solution in solvent. The critical point for alkyd latex polymers can be determined by any of the classic measures. Note de contenu : - Model direct-to-metal formulation

Lamination, extrusion, and dispersion coating are applied on paper surface to improve barrier properties. Dispersion coating can be applied to paper surface on line during paper preparation using rod coater. In the present study, an attempt has been made to increase the process speed of coating preparation by single-step process at varying pigment concentration. Coating dispersion was applied on kraft paper using laboratory rod coated and dried in hot air oven at 80°C for 5 min. Furthermore, thermal stability, water vapor barrier properties, and grease resistance of PVOH/kaolin and PVOH/talc-coated paper were studied. Additionally, the effect of single layer and bilayer coating on paper properties was also studied. Permeability model was used to predict the orientation of pigments to the surface of paper. Viscosity of both kaolin and talc-based dispersion increased with the increase in pigment concentration. Thermal studies showed that at 600°C residual mass (%) of PVOH film increased from 0.6 to 9.89% and 15% with the addition of 25% (by weight) kaolin and talc pigment. At high pigment concentration (40–50%, by weight), the highest reduction in WVTR was observed for both the pigments. Excellent coverage of paper surface and high grease resistance was observed for all coating formulations. Our study showed that talc provides better thermal and barrier properties to coated paper than kaolin.

Thermoplastiques -- Moulage par injectionIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In temperature cycle injection moulding (TCIM) of thermoplastics, the mould cavity surface is heated rapidly to a temperature close to the glass transition or crystalline melting point of the resin before melt injection, and then cooled after injection is complete. A range of important benefits of the process are listed, among which is surface improvement, and results are presented that quantify in detail the improvements achhieved. Weldline dimensions and surface roughness are determined using white light inteferometry, with a scale of inspection below 5 nm. For a qualitative comparison of the surface finish, photography and stereomicroscopy are used. Weld lines on conventional ABS/PMMA parts are up to 17 μm deep and 70 μm wide, hence clearly visible, whereas they are not detectable on TCIM parts. Surface roughness, Ra, on these parts is found to be 37 nm for conventional parts, reducing to 20 nm using TCIM. Surface roughness is compared for conventional and TCIM mouldings in chemically foamed ABS, foamed PP with and without talc, and long-fibre-glass filled PP. For the conventionally produced foamed parts, Ra is approximately 1 500 nm. Using TCIM, Ra reduces to 30 nm for ABS, 70 nm for unfilled PP and 130 nm for PP with talc. Visually, this corresponds to a change from a heavily patterned, striated appearance to a uniform glossy surface. The parts in long-fibre (11 mm) filled PP show a reduction in Ra from 1 600 nm to 150 nm using TCIM. The conventionally moulded parts have a rough, pitted surface; the TCIM parts are smooth and glossy.
