ThuyaIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Alkyd-, oil-modified-latex-, and latex-based finishes were applied to severely weathered western redcedar and redwood boards that did not have any surface treatment to ameliorate the weathered surface prior to painting. Six finishes were evaluated annually for 11 years for cracking, flaking, erosion, mildew growth, discoloration, and general appearance. Lowsolids-content latex finishes that contained about 10% raw linseed oil and 11% acrylic resin (i.e., the oil-modified latex finishes) performed better on badly weathered wood than did the alkyd and the other latex finish, even after 11 years. Latex finishes that contained raw linseed oil probably stabilized the weathered surface and plasticized the finish. The stabilization of the wood surface and the flexibility of the finish throughout its service life are the important factors in finish performance on these weathered substrates. Résistance des matériauxTags : Substrat Evaluation 'Outillage composite' Index. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The need to fabricate composite parts for prototype applications and repair incidents requires lay-up tooling that can be rapidly fabricated. One option for laying tooling involves the use of substrates that are suitable for composite part curing. These substrates may utilize secondary coatings or laminates to serve as the tool surface. In addition to thermal performance, dimensional stability, and durability, the ability to shape the substrate material to the desired geometric net shape while satisfying surface integrity requirements in the shortest period of time, at the lowest cost is of key importance. Challenges of current tooing substrates include : brittleness, porosity, and susceptibility to thermal effects, to name a few. The nature of these material characteristics makes finding optimal processing conditions for rapid fabrication a time consuming task. This work presents a method to evaluate different substrates material systems for use in composite tooling applications. Note de contenu : - TOOLING SUBSTRATE MATERIALS

Revêtements en bâtiment:Peinture en bâtimentIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A recently developed xenon arc-based accelerated weathering cycle, ASTM D7869-13, has been validated for automotive and aerospace coatings, but its ability to predict the gloss and color retention of premium architectural finishes has not yet been evaluated. We review new weathering data comparing the performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) architectural finishes in south Florida exposure as well as several accelerated exposure methods including ASTM D7869-13. ASTM D7869 accurately reproduced Florida rank order gloss and color retention trends for coatings made with PVDF-acrylic blends and inorganic pigments, as well as the gloss and color changes seen in Florida for 70% PVDF masstone coatings made with a number of single organic pigments. However, the D7869 cycle has difficulty predicting the rank order of rutile TiO2 grades for the gloss retention of PVDF coatings in Florida, as well as the magnitude and direction of color fade from organic pigment degradation in organic pigment/inorganic pigment blends. One open question that remains is whether the ASTM D7869 cycle might have some utility for industry standard or specification purposes, if the test is limited to specific reference colors or more ideally to specific reference pigments.
