It can be caused by the natural fat present in the leather or by fatty compounds that have been incorporated into the leather during the oiling process. So it is better to use special synthetic oil that has a minimal tendency to form fatty spew or to use ails of a high iodine value. This means that there would be less chance of spew in the case of application of fat liquor, and one should also try to tackle the problems before processing wet-blue by using a strong emulsifying agent to avoid spew formation due to natural fat. On the other hand, it will also be beneficial because a variety of problems are caused by insufficient removal of natural grease such as bad odeur, poor preservation and a lack of inner softness. High amounts of natural fat due to poor degreasing or the presence of fat liquors with high amount of naturel oils (unsaturated fats) have a negative affect and can form significant levels of chromium VI. synthetic fats are favourable. Hydrocarbures halogénésIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was required in industrial products. Now, it is also sought in household products. The detrimental impact of VOCs on air quality and human health pushed state authorities to take measures to reduce their emissions and occurrence in circulating goods. A set of 28 VOCs including 20 halogenated alkyl and aromatic compounds, two ethers and six hydrocarbons was built as a model of most VOCs possibly encountered in leather and textile commercial products. A variety of leather and textile matrices were spiked with known amounts of the VOC mix. It is shown that the headspace (HS) extraction must last for 45 min at 90°C to reach full recovery of the least volatile compounds (1,2-diclorobenzene) even if 80% and more recovery is obtained in 5 min at 90°C for all 28 VOCs contained in 20 mg amounts of leather or textile samples. The single ion-monitoring (SIM) mode of the mass spectrometer was needed to quantitate several VOCs overlapping in the GC chromatogram. The HS GC-MS method produced a statistically validated limit of quantification of 2.5 mg/kg (ppm) for all 28 VOCs analyzed. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL SECTION : 1. Materials - 2. Produits naturelsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Awareness of our link with nature is increasingly influencing consumer choice, and this is changing the way we approach formulations and markets.
This can be seen not only in the food sector, but also in other areas such as perfumery, cosmetics, hygiene and cleaning industry. Many brands have realised this and now favour natural and/or eco-designed formulas. However, formulating such a product can be restrictive and have an impact on sensoriality, particularly on olfactory sensoriality.Note de contenu : - 1. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A matched-side study of 300 heavy steerhides was conducted jointly by Spencer Foods, Inc. and two agencies of the USDA to reexamine the economics of processing fresh, uncured hides into side upper leather in the light of efforts being made to eliminate salt from tannery and packing house effluents. In this report we present a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of leather made from uncured vs. cured sides at the wrung, unsplit blue stage and again at the dry crust stage, designed to indicate any potential quality advantage of one type of product over the other. A further effort was made to determine whether any other commercially important differences occurred, in response to processing, between the two types of stock. Analysis of the blue stock revealed that the uncured sides had a significantly higher chrome and ash content and a higher shrinkage temperature, while microscopic examination showed no difference in chrome distribution or extent of opening up of the fibers. Physical tests showed a higher tensile strength and penetrometer strength for the uncured sides but a lower ball burst extension value. The crust leather from uncured sides was equivalent to that from cured sides in sorting characteristics but had a significantly higher tensile strength. Processing differences were noted at the liming and chrome-tanning steps that appear advantageous to the processing of fresh hides. Furthermore, there was a slightly higher yield of crust leather from the uncured sides. it was concluded that it is possible, and perhaps economically advantageous, to process uncured hides by conventional processes into quality leather that is essentially indistinguishable from leather made from cured hides.
