Vernis -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of clearcoats separately loaded with different concentrations of functional silicon–polyacrylate and polydimethyl siloxane additives were prepared. Optical performances of the cured films were studied by gonio-spectrophotometry. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was used in order to investigate viscoelastic properties of the additive-containing films. Contact angle measurements, (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray, and atomic force microscopy techniques were utilized to evaluate surface properties of the clearcoats. It was shown that clearcoat surface free energy decreased and its crosslinking density increased in the presence of the additives. Results revealed that addition of both additives to the clearcoat enhanced its resistance against pancreatin (simulated bird droppings). A decrease in surface degradation was observed in the presence of the additives. Results also showed that functional polydimethyl siloxane influenced coating viscoelastic, surface chemistry, and biological resistance more effectively compared to that of the functional silicon–polyacrylate one.

However, polyurethane composite materials are highly inflammable and thus require the use of flame retardants. This study selected green and environment-friendly flame retardants such as expanded graphite, aluminum hydroxide, and kaolin to be used as individual or paired retardants to produce polyurethane composites. By analyzing the potential and mechanical properties of the polyurethane composites, it was found that the composite material with the flame retardant composed of graphite and modified kaolin had better flame retardancy, smoke suppression performance, and high thermal stability. Microscopie électronique en transmissionIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The effects of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on the hierarchical structure of sheepskin collagen fibres were investigated by using of transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that although the unique axial periodic (d periodicity) structure of collagen fibrils and orderly arrangement of collagen molecule did not change obviously alter the introduction of PAA, the aggregation behaviour of collagen fibres was greatly influenced. With increasing concentration of PAA, the order of intermolecular lateral packing decreased, the shrinkage of the leather lessened [from changes in surface morphology observed by SEM] and the dry heat stability of collagen fibre declined due to a decrease in the orderly degree of collagen fibre aggregation.

Tannage Résumé : The US meat industry currently produces approximately 35 million cattle hides annually as its most valuable coproduct. These hides serve as raw material, first for the leather industry, and then for the gelatin, and biomaterials industries. The conversion of animal hides into leather is a multistep process that has evolved more as art form than as science. Economic or environmental issues typically dictate changes in beam-house processes that prepare the hide for tanning. The tanner evaluates these changes, in terms of impact on tannery costs and quality of leather produced. Thus far, the effects of beam-house processes on the molecular characteristics of collagen have received little attention. The basis for tanning and most biomaterials applications is the stabilization of the collagen matrix, thus any changes to the molecular characteristics of hide collagen may be expected to impact these applications. This study showed that while the effects of different dehairing processes on the structure and stability of monomeric collagen were similar, the effects on the collagen fiber structure were distinct. These results are anticipated to assist the tanner as well as the manufacturers of collagen-based biomaterials and gelatin to better understand their substrate and changes to it that may occur when beam-house processes are altered.

ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A thin film of Zn–Ni–Fe2O3 on steel substrates was prepared by electrodeposition technique using Zn–Ni alloy plating solution with nano-sized Fe2O3 particles. The cathodic polarization and cyclic voltammetry techniques were used to explain deposition process. The corrosion behavior of deposits was evaluated by polarization and impedance studies. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images were used to study the surface morphology of coating. The grain size and amount of Fe2O3 particles present in composite coating were measured by X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction spectrometer (EDS), respectively.
