Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This report deals with the fabrication of NiO nanoparticle (NiO Nps) dispersed alkyd coating and its antimicrobial activity. NiO Nps is prepared by novel sol–gel technique using pectic polysaccharides as a gelling agent. The gelling agent converts the hydroxo-metal network into a gel within 4 h of time. After calcination, the FESEM and TEM micrograph of the obtained NiO Nps shows cubic and irregular shaped structures with size ranging from 30 to 200 nm. The structural characterizations have been evaluated through XRD, FTIR, UV–vis and VSM studies. The antimicrobial activity of NiO Nps has been carried out against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria namely Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus mutans, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The findings of the present study indicate that the NiO Nps permeate the bacterial cell wall, accumulated inside thereby facilitating the synergistic impact against the growth of bacterial strains. The experimental outcomes suggest the potential use of NiO as pigments in the alkyd coating. Alkyd coating consisting of NiO Nps exhibits considerable reduction in bacterial viability when it comes in contact against microbial strains, proving the efficacy of the coating.

Titane isopropanolateIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : New inorganic/organic hybrid coatings have been prepared utilizing linseed oil and sunflower oil as an organic phase and two sol-gel precursors [titanium (IV) i-propoxide, titanium (di-i-propoxide) bis(acetyl-acetonate)] as an inorganic phase. The ultimate goal is to develop a primer that will provide better adhesion and corrosion protection for metal substrates with minimal environmental impact. Coatings with a range of sol-gel precursor to drying oil ratios have been studied. Various coatings properties such as adhesion, hardness, impact resistance, and flexibility were observed as a function of sol-gel precursor content. In addition, the tensile properties and thermo-oxidative stabilities were also investigated. During processing, the sol-gel precursors appear to accelerate the drying of the coatings. Higher sol-gel precursor content increased both tensile strength and tensile modulus but decreased flexibility and strain-at-break. The thermo-oxidative stability was similar to drying oil coatings cured with driers.
Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A one-pot sonochemical irradiation method was developed for the fabrication of superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabric from a solution consisting of branched silica nanoparticles and tetraethoxysilane-dodecyltrimethoxysilane sol. The silica/sol-coated cotton fabric could be wetted by liquids of low surface tension, but was water repellent with a water contact angle of 159 ± 1.2° and water shedding angle of 6 ± 0.8°. The as-prepared cotton fabric could be used as effective materials for the separation of oil from water with separation efficiency as high as 98.2% and maintained separation efficiency above 94% after 30 separation cycles for the kerosene-water mixture. Moreover, the superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabric could maintain stable superhydrophobicity after treatment with strong acidic and alkali solutions, and harsh mechanical damage. Therefore, this reported robust superhydrophobic cotton fabric exhibits encouraging practical application for oil-water separation. Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : When it comes to corrosion protection coatings, sol-gel based formulations have many advantages over conventional organic paints. However, to get the best performance from such formulations they must be cured at high temperatures (around 150 °C), which means
that the process is energy-consuming and has a high environmental impact. However, lower curing temperatures, especially at room temperature, normally yield very porous non-protective coatings. Moreover, some large parts cannot be placed in an oven (e. g. a ship’s hull) and others are heat-sensitive substrates (polymers) that deteriorate when heated.Note de contenu : - Sol-gels

Si(OCH2CH3)4 + 2 H2O → SiO2 + 4 CH3CH2OH.

Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Despite its popularity in other industries, including textiles, for the preparation of inorganic and hybrid coatings, the use of sol-gel for leather finishing is a barely explored field. To exploit its unique and versatile chemistry, we have here evaluated the potential of sol-gel route for preparing protective coatings and achieve, at the same time, water- repellency on treated leather. To this aim, tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) and functionalized Si-alkoxides, containing either alkyl or fluorinated groups were selected and compared.
The results of characterization indicate that, for the chosen formulations, alcohol-based sols were patently more effective than their water-based counterparts. Very high contact-angles were obtained for both alkyl- and fluorinated alkoxides, but, not surprisingly, fluorinated coatings provided a longer-lasting hydro-repellency. Sols well preserved leather grain, with no patent accumulation on pores or ridges, while only minor changes in color was observed in most formulations.
Overall, our results suggest that a careful optimization of sol-gel formulation can offer unexplored, versatile and very effective solutions in leather finishing.Note de contenu : - Synthesis and deposition of the sols
