Tannage Résumé : A series of hydrogen peroxide-oxidized soybean polysaccharides (HPS) were prepared using H2O2 and copper catalyst, which were then used as novel masking agents for zirconium tanning. The HPS samples were characterized by Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FT-IR suggested the formation of carbonyl and carboxyl groups after hydrogen peroxide oxidation. DLS indicated that the HPS particle size decreases with increasing the H2O2 dosage. HPS with carbonyl and carboxyl groups and medium particle size was able to coordinate with zirconium to remarkably facilitate the tanning process. The shrinkage temperature of the tanned leather reached 92oC. Meanwhile, the fullness, softness, and mechanical properties of the leather were greatly improved by the tanning. The function of HPS and its interaction with zirconium were studied by FT-IR, XRD, and it was found that the triple helical structures of collagen fiber were not changed greatly. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that collagen fibers were dispersed and tanning agents were evenly distributed in collagen fibers. A new strategy for chromefree tanning is suggested and a strong support for the application of zirconium tanning is provided.

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Historical leather objects are at risk of deterioration through mechanical stress such as viscoelastic and plastic deformation as well as natural aging erosion. So, it was expected that appropriate leather treatment should improve their mechanical properties. For this purpose, the mechanical behavior of goat historical leather treated with hydroxyapatite (HA) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) was studied and compared with the mechanical properties of untreated sample (control). The samples were subjected to a dynamic tensile stress by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) as well as static stress by tensile test. In addition, the treatment effects on the leather mechanical properties were investigated after accelerating aging test. It was shown that treated sample exhibited more softness, better mechanical properties and less structural changes than the untreated sample. The Scanning Electron Microscopy studies show uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the leather matrix as well as the nano hydroxyapatite particles, which are placed between collagen fibers. Polymères ramifiésIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A series of coconut oil-based hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched-linear polyesters of generations 1-3 (CHBPs) were synthesized using a one-pot method and utilized in leather making. The effect of hyperbranched polymers on collagen fibres was discussed by comparing with linear products at macro level. The experimental results showed that hyperbranched polymers are less lubricating than linear compounds but have more filling abilities. Thickening rates of the leather treated by CHBPs decreased with growing generations due to their hydroxyl groups external to the molecule which will cross-link collagen fibres. In addition, CHBPs at higher generations can shrink location difference sharply. Unluckily, except for CHBP, other products didn't improve the mechanical properties of the leather remarkably. Still, hyperbranched polymers showed great potential application in the leather industry. Tannage Résumé : In this study, diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl) aminomethyl phosphonate was modified by hexamethylene diisocyanate, and then was utilized to partly replace the isocyanates to prepare hyperbranched polyurethanes (HPU-DPAs). The hyperbranched polyurethanes were then employed in the retanning process of wet blue. The shrinkage temperature, average thickness as well as mechanical properties of leather before and after retanning were acquired. The flammability of retanned leather was measured by cone calorimeter test. The morphologies of wet blue and leather after retanning by HPU-DAP were obtained using a scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the average thickness, tensile strength and elongation at break of leather were all improved after retanning. Retanning by HPU-DAPs can effectively increase flame retardancy of final leather.

Solidité de la couleurIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Protein based finishing on leather surface is generally done using casein-based formulation which forms a transparent and breathable film. Other naturally available options such as protein extracted from flax seeds exhibit versatile application in various fields. Thus in this work, the flax seed protein which is found to be 84%, along with bees wax emulsion is explored for the first time as an Eco benign binder and as an alternative for casein based finish. The binders play very important role in leather finishing as it helps in binding the various constituents of finishing such as pigments, wax, and additives to the leather matrix. The prepared Eco benign binder formed a continuous film on the surface of the leather and improved the of physical properties and crack resistance of the leather. The FTIR and particle size analysis were carried out for the characterization of the Eco benign binder. The experimental leathers were tested for tensile strength, elongation at break, lastometer test, colour fastness and cold crack tests. The results of the said tests were satisfied and on par with control leathers.
