ViscositéIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : A model for the evolution of torque requirements in the batch mixing of silica agglomerates in styrene-butadiene rubber has been developed. The analysis considers the rheology of suspensions as modeled by the Krieger-Dougherty equation but with modifications so that it can apply to a wider range of solids loading, and combines that with a separate model that expresses the kinetics of the dispersion of silica agglomerates. The model shows good agreement with the trends of experimental data, and thus can be used to make predictions about torque requirements for compounding commercial grades of silica into rubber, as related to dispersion, under practical mixing conditions. New developments and advances in synthesis capabilities provide the market with a myriad of polymers for the vertical elastomeric masonry coatings market. New polymer technology has been developed without the addition of alkyl-phenolethoxylate surfactants, NMP or formaldehyde that enables the formulation of low VOC elastomeric coatings for vertical masonry applications.
Coatings based on the new technology have the ability to withstand high pH environments due to improvements in alkali resistance. The high level of alkali resistance gives the coating the ability to be used as self-priming coating, primer or topcoat.
New elastomeric coatings exhibit excellent water and efflorescence resistance, reducing the lifetime maintenance requirements and costs associated with preparing and recoating. Lower water intake of the coating prevents water penetration into the building structure and enhances wet adhesion of the topcoat at the masonry substrate. Improved water resistance and adhesion properties protect the structure from water damage. High tensile and elongation provides coatings with superior crack resistance when compared to conventional architectural coatings. In addition, improved weathering and resistance to dirt pick-up keep surfaces clean, with a long-lasting, fresh appearance.
This technology is recommended for use in elastomeric primers and topcoats for masonry façades, as well as new/hot, aged or repainted surfaces including exterior walls, concrete, block, brick, stucco, fibre cement and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
Modifications to traditional styrene acrylic and all-acrylic chemistries have been implemented into development of new polymers for elastomeric applications.Note de contenu : - THE CHALLENGE

Tannage -- DéchetsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This paper presents the results of studies using waste hair from tannery processing on the preparation of protein varieties and their use as fillers for a hydrophobic elastomer such as XNBR (Carboxylated Butadiene —Acrylonitrile Rubber). The protein investigated waste keratin comes from the tannery industry. In the first step of research the cattle hair was shredded and subjected la acidic, basic and enzymatic hydrolysis. In the next step the keratin hydrolysates were stirred with the plasticizer stearin in an addition reaction. Finally, we recovered a multifunctional preparation in powdered form to suit application as a tiller of elastomers. The incorporation of keratin hydrolysate adducts, based on previously modified waste keratin, into this rubber made it possible to obtain elastomeric materials with good rheological and mechanical properties and hardness, resistant to thermo-oxidative ageing. The presence of modified protein of a hydrophilic character not only facilitates cross-linking processes but also increases the susceptibility of the material to bio-decomposition in the natural environment.
