RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A rotational rheometer was used to investigate the steady rheological behaviors of UV-curable waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate dispersions (WHBPUADs). The flow curves of WHBPUADs were fitted mathematically using the Cross model. The effects of many factors including solid content, concentration of hydrophilic groups, and degree of neutralization on the rheological behaviors were studied and discussed. It was found that the viscosity of WHBPUAD decreased with increasing shear rate, indicating that WHBPUAD was pseudoplastic. On the other hand, at the same shear rate, the viscosity of WHBPUAD increased with increasing solid content and degree of neutralization but decreased with increasing concentration of hydrophilic groups. The Cross model could describe the flow curve of WHBPUAD accurately, with square of correlation coefficient (R 2) above 0.9. Moreover, most of the zero-shear viscosity values (? 0) obtained by the Cross model were located in the range of 0.2–10 Pa·s, which could fully meet the practical application requirement.

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A typical thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) and its analogue polyurethane-urea (PUU) are (AB)n type random block copolymers consisting of sequences of hard and soft segments. In the present communication we have tested a new hypothesis for achieving control on microphase separation namely, the use of defect structural moieties in hard segments. The inspiration for this idea is derived from semicrystalline polymers in which the role of defect moieties in controlling the size of crystalline structures is well known. Thus the overall objective of the present study was to achieve control on the phase morphology of PUUs via controlled introduction of defects in the hard segments. Present study systematically investigates the role of the content and the length of aliphatic chain defect in hard segment on the morphology and microphase mixing in PUU copolymers. Thus, we have successfully shown that morphology of polyurethanes can be controlled by introducing chain defects in the hard segments. Polypropylène
RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polypropylene (PP) is one of the fastest growing thermoplastic polymers in the world, second only to polyethylene. This is primarily due to its excellent balance of physical and chemical properties at a lower cost. PP however possesses low melt strength on account of its linear structure and hence is not easily amenable to processing techniques that involve free surface stretching deformations like thermoforming, blow molding and extrusion film casting. One way to enhance the melt strength of PP is to incorporate long chain branches in its molecular architecture. The present study focuses on the impact of rheology of linear and branched PP on their thermoforming characteristics. Two grades each of linear and long chain branched (LCB) PP homopolymer and impact copolymer (ICP) were used. It was observed that the LCB-PP homopolymer and LCB-ICP showed higher flow activation energy, reduced value of loss tangent and nearly equal frequency dependence of storage and loss moduli in shear rheology. Also, a strong strain hardening behavior was displayed in extensional rheology by the LCB grades. Plug assist thermoforming experiments were carried out to assess the effect of long chain branching on surface strain and thickness distribution for axisymmetric cups of two draw ratios. Biaxial surface strain maps of the formed cups were quantified using Grid Strain Analysis (GSA). Thermoformed cups made from LCB-PP homopolymer and LCB-impact copolymer showed lower surface strain and overall higher thickness as compared to cups made from their linear counterparts, which is in accordance with what might be expected from their rheology.
