Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The authors explain why the drive to reduce VOC content of formulations and the need to increase loads while reducing resin levels is necessitating the development of improved dispersants.
The combination of the constant drive to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) content of formulations and the need to increase pigments loads while reducing resin levels in pigment concentrates, is necessitating the development of improved dispersants. A great deal of effort has centred on new polymeric dispersants with novel polymer architecture and composition of both the pigment anchoring groups and the stabilising moieties.
Traditionally, free radical polymerisation (FRP) has been used to polymerise functional monomers which are required to make good pigment dispersants. FRP is robust with tolerance towards many impurities such as oxygen and heteroatoms.
However, FRP has limitations arising from non-selectivity, i.e. little control over polymer topology or architecture and limited control over molecular weight. It has beenf ound that block copolymers are generally more efficient dispersants than their random copolymer analogues, therefore, new polymerisation techniques are being investigated to develop a new range of dispersants to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of modern pigment dispersants.
Transition metal mediated living radical polymerisation (TMM-LR°) also known as atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) allows a level of control un paralleled in polymer synthesis enabling the formation f well-defined polymer structures including block, grafs and hyperbranched copolymers as well as controlling alpha therminal functionality. Unlike many other living polymerisation techniques TMM-LRP is robust and tolerant to most impurities with the exception of acids. This makes the technology applicable to a wide range of monomers inlcuding, but no limited to, alkyl methacrylate, diethylaminoethylmethacrylate, PEG methacrylate, glycerol methacrylate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, protected acid functional methacrylates and many styrenics.Note de contenu : - polymerisation technology

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new coating technique based on the so-called lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase transition phenomena known from polymer solutions has been studied. Contrary to the commonly-known features that precipitation from solution occurs upon cooling (or solvent evaporation) or by a precipitant, LCST behaviour means a coagulation and precipitation of the polymer from solution upon heating, once a critical temperature is exceeded. This technology not only allows a controlled surface modification of pigments or flat substrates by an organic polymer coating layer, but also allows one to introduce specific surface features of nanoscopic to mesoscopic dimensions. The surface topology may be reversibly varied from a regular, almost close-packed, mesoscopic hemisphere texture to a nanoscopic roughness or rendered evenly smooth. solvantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cu-phthalocyanine pigments represent one of the major classes of organic pigments that are used in the coatings and ink industries. Although used extensively, dispersing these pigments is by no means without a challenge. Especially as the rheological behaviour of the mill base can be difficult to control, which might lead to decreased pigment loading or the need for a synergist. Such synergists usually have a positive effect on rheology but can lead to leaching problems in the final application.
In order to fulfil the market needs, two dedicated dispersing agents have been added to BASF's portfolio.
Its most recent products, Efka PX 4350 and Efka PX 4351 are high performance dispersing agents, specially developed for processing Cu-phthalocyanine pigments ; their use ensures peak performance in viscosity reduction and optimum colour development in high-end solvent-based applications including high solids.Note de contenu : - Block copolymer dispersing agents based on CFRP technology

The ST/MA copolymerizations were performed in 1,4-dioxane at 110 °C and resulted in PEB-b-P(ST-ran-MA)2triblock copolymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (¯Mm/¯Mn≈ 1.5). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicated that the initiator used was ≈ 93% efficient. The resulting copolymers were then blended as 20 wt.% dispersions in nylon 6 (PA6) at 230 °C. With as little as 10 mol.% of MA in the feed to make the PEB-b-P(ST-ran-MA)2, blends were deemed dynamically compatibilized based on the reduced particle size. All of the PEB-b-P(ST-ran-MA)2/PA6 blends resulted in a minor phase particle size ¯DVS = 0.1 μm while the PEB-b-P(ST)/PA6 blend had ¯DVS = 1.15 μm (i. e. no MA in the copolymer). Tensile testing revealed yield stresses and strains decreased steadily from pure PA6 to non-reactive PEB-b-P(ST)2/PA6 to PEB-b-P(STran-MA)2/PA6. However, no difference in tensile properties was observed between PEB-b-P(ST-ran-MA)2/PA6 samples made from PEB-b-P(ST-ran-MA)2copolymer of varying MA content.
