To assess the effect of screw zones, the microstructural development of nanocomposites along the screw was investigated. Accordingly, dead-stop experiment samples were taken at four different positions of the extruder after abruptly stopping the machine and opening the barrel. Effect of clay loading on the evolution of morphology in the extruder was studied. X-Ray diffraction results showed that at lower clay contents (up to~ 7 wt.%), the intercalation process is independent of screw geometry and accomplishes as soon as the matrix is melted; and on the other hand, excessive melt mixing of the samples containing higher clay loadings (10 wt.%) might lead to the collapse of silicate layers and consequently poor degrees of intercalation/exfoliation. Results were confirmed by TEM micrographs and also XRD patterns of the nanocomposites sensitively detecting the microstructural changes of the samples. Transition vitreuseIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)/ graphene nanosheets (GNs) were compounded by a two-step melt mixing process via an internal mixer (brabender plasticorder). The effect of GNs, graphene oxide (GOSs) and graphene oxide functionalized with PP chains (PP-g-GOSs) on various blend properties were investigated. Wide X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of the prepared nanocomposites revealed that the nanofillers were mostly dispersed into the PP phase and the dispersion state of GNs was improved with functionalization of graphene. SEM photomicrographs indicated that rubber droplets were distributed in the PP phase and a reduction of the dispersed EPDM droplet size was observed most likely due to increase in the viscosity of the PP-phase during melt mixing. The effects of nanofillers on thermal, mechanical and rheological properties were reported, and the obtained results were discussed in terms of morphology, state of dispersion and distribution of the nanofillers within the PP matrix. As for the mechanical properties, an improvement of 56% in tensile modulus and 48% in tensile strength, while 72% reduction in elongation at break was observed. The DMTA results revealed that the nanocomposites based on PP-g-GOSs had lower damping behavior and the intensity of the loss factor decreased by increasing the GNs content. These results indicate the presence of a strong interfacial interaction between the nanoplatelets and the polymer matrix. Microscopie électronique en transmissionIndex. décimale : 677 Textiles Résumé : Modern methods for analyzing man-made fibers will be presented, focusing on the most recent and sophisticated techniques of fiber analysis. Beside gathering new information about fundamental principles of structure formation in polymeric fibers, the analysis techniques (wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)) are also of great value for practical applications. For the industry, these methods support the process development for new man-made fiber materials and can also be used for quality control after production. Produits antisolairesIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Despite the UV performance benefits of particulate UV filters, concerns have been raised over their potential percutaneous permeation leading to the requirement of a specific approval for all nano UV filters in Europe. Under the legally binding definition of the Cosmetic regulation No. 1223/2009, nanomaterial means […] a material […] on the scale from 1 to 100 nm. The recommendation of the European Commission (2011/696/EU) revised 10 of June 2022 (2022/C229/01) further specifies that a material is nano when at least 50% of the number size distribution of the constituent particles is comprised between 1 and 100 nm. The situation for Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide is confusing since the constituent particles are often part of agglomerates. Some suppliers clearly specify the nano feature of their material, while others declare the non-nano property of their inorganic products. The objective of this study was, therefore, to measure the number-based particle size distribution of three marketed Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide grades using the decision support flow scheme devised by the NanoDefine project. This group was created to support the identification of nanomaterials as required by the European legislation. We employed the tier 1 method asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) coupled with UV and IC-PMS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy) detectors and tier 2 method transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The study clearly taught that the samples that appeared to be non-nanomaterials with AF4-IC-PMS measurements were finally proven to be nanomaterials using the TEM tier 2 method. Relying only on tier 1 methodologies such as AF4, X-Ray Disc Centrifuge or Dynamic Light Scattering to determine the non-nano property of a material is insufficient, since tier 1 methods are not able to detect constituent particles as part of agglomerates, which is often the case for Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. The status of being a non-nanomaterial can, in this case, only be certified with a tier 2 technique, particularly electron microscopy.
