We must build up future generation of coatings which will be based on water and alcohol. This is an effort to develop a very short oil length linseed oil, rosin based alkyds which can be thinned with organic solvents, alcohol and water. The mole ratio of reactants, catalyst, cooking schedule and order of addition of reactants has been standardized. This high acid value resin is converted to alkyd emulsion paste of excellent stability by using polyvinyl alcohol and cosolvents. This alkyd emulsion paste has been used as a binder for primer formulation. This primer formulation can accommodate 7 to 12% of water and 5 to 57% of ethyl alcohol. All these primer compositions do not require any additional drier. They are drier free, water, alcohol thinnable composition with excellent performance characteristics.

Alkoxysilane functional alkyds and tung oil-based reactive diluents were synthesized and used as additives in varying amounts in alkyd coatings. Looking at modified alkyd versus modified reactive diluent allows for the comparison of the humidity effect on high and low molecular weight alkoxysilane functional additives. The coatings were cured at 25 and 75% relative humidity and evaluated for drying time, coating and tensile properties, and gel content. It was found that at higher humidity, the alkoxysilane-containing samples improved properties significantly when compared to the control alkyd.

Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Coatings are commonly believed to protect metal surfaces from corrosion based on some combination of their barrier properties and electrochemical properties. Various physical and electrochemical tests were performed on seven different coatings (latex, alkyd, 2-PK epoxy, and electrocoat) to determine which properties were the main determinants of corrosion resistance in continuous and cyclic corrosion tests. Physical property tests and AC electrochemical tests were all related to barrier behavior, while DC electrochemical tests were related to electrochemical behavior. DC electrochemical properties are commonly associated with inhibitor chemistry, but can be broadly related to all components of the paint. These test results were compared with corrosion test results from both continuous (B-117) and cyclic (GM9540) accelerated tests. The best correlation was seen with a model emphasizing barrier behavior with a secondary component relating to electrochemical protection. In the traditional high gloss alkyd enamels, the conventional alkyd resins are dissolved in an organic solvent, such as mineral spirit. Due to health and environmental concerns there is an increasing interest in waterborne alkyd enamels. Oil-in-water emulsions of long-oil alkyd resins typically used in solventborne enamels are thereforean interesting alternative. Suitable emulsifying agents and special equipments which provide high-energy input are usually required to generate stable oil-in-water alkyd emulsions containing small particle size.
In this work APE-free emulsifying agents designed to promote easy emulsification of long-oil alikyds using conventional low shear stirring equipments and low emulsifier content will be presented.
The effects of temperature, shear rate, emulsifying agent composition and content on the emulsion inversion point (EIP), solid content and particle size will be explored.
Finally, gloss of waterborne and solventborne enamels will be compared.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Alkyd emulsification - Enamels
