ThermocinétiqueIndex. décimale : 677.4 Textiles artificiels Résumé : Electrically conductive fibers can be made of several materials, including metal coatings, metal wires, intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) and polymer nanocomposites. Usually, the electrical conductivity is lower for nanocomposite fibers compared to the other concepts. The electrical power lost during the transport of the electrical current is converted to heat, whereas this effect can be used to apply the fibers as heating elements. In this article, the melt spinning of such fibers is demonstrated. Note de contenu : - Material

RhéométrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : Polymer nanocomposites are often prepared by melt compounding due to the suitability of the latter to industrial scale production. Even though monitoring the production process for quality control and/or optimization purposes is generally done off-line, the possibility of using on-line oscillatory rheometry has many inherent advantages. This work illustrates the use of a prototype rheometer to monitor the production of polymer nanocomposites by making measurements at specific locations along the extruder axis. The device is presented and its operation is explained. Examples of its use to characterize polypropylene and polyamide matrix nanocomposites with organoclays and carbon nanotubes are discussed, thus demonstrating the usefulness of the device.

PolymèresIndex. décimale : 620.19 Autres matériaux Résumé : The aircraft industry is in need of lighter, stronger and safer materials. Carbon nanotubes, when placed strategically in composite materials, add a 3D reinforcement without reducing the in-plane properties of the materials. Such nano-engineered composite designs will produce tougher structures with only minimal added weight. In addition, these nano-architectures add new capabilities to the composites, turning them into truly multi-functional nano-engineered materials.
