ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : This paper analyzes, from a life cycle perspective, the environmental performance of a newly developed chromium-free tanning process compared to the conventional one, in China. Both processes were evaluated by using carbon footprint, energy consumption and toxicity indicators. Chromium-free tanning process has been found to significantly reduce the considered impact categories compared to conventional tanning. The impact contribution of each process step was calculated, with the tanning step being the major contributor. Results show that the production of chemicals used in the tanning process, have a significant effect on the impacts evaluated. Some of these chemicals have been substituted with similar ones (used as proxies) when no manufacturing-data was available in the databases. Thus, it is important for future and more precise LCA studies to develop databases on the specific chemicals used. This study is a first estimation of the impacts and will help on the decision of expending time and efforts on developing and optimizing the new technology. The results show that it is interesting to use this LCA methodology to environmentally evaluate new research processes and products, before industrial scaling and implementing them, to optimize research time and efforts towards the most environmentally promising products and processes. ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Traditional polyurethane (PU) catalysts, especially dibutyl tin dilaurate, face scrutiny over toxicity concerns, leading to interest in safer alternatives. In an unexpected turn of events, research into a commercially available antibacterial agent revealed that it drastically reduced the pot life of PU coatings. Experiments show that when PU coatings were formulated with the antibacterial agent as catalyst, drying time and solvent resistance were improved as compared to traditional tin and zirconium catalysts. Further analysis showed that this was the result of copper compounds and it could be shown that a similar catalytic effect was achieved through Cu(II)-sulfate and Cu(II)-acetate. Such copper salts are not yet commonly known as replacements for tin catalysts. Possible mechanisms such as heterogenous catalysis or in-situ formation of the active compound were discussed. ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : As other causes decline in importance, chromium-tanned leather has become a more important source for chromium allergy, which affects around 1% of the general population. The aim of this review is to give suggestions on how to minimize the risk of leather-related allergic contact dermatitis, which can be elicited in chromium-allergic persons by hexavalent and trivalent chromium released from leather. Hexavalent chromium is the more potent chromium form and requires a lower skin dose to elicit allergic reactions. It is formed on the surface of some, antioxidant-free, leathers at dry conditions (< 35% relative humidity) and is influenced by the tanning process and other conditions, such as UV irradiation, contact with alkaline solutions, and leather age. Trivalent chromium is the dominant form released from chromium-tanned leather and its released amount is sufficient to elicit allergic reactions in some chromium-allergic individuals when they are exposed repetitively and over longer time (days – months). A low initial test result (< 3 mg/kg) for hexavalent chromium with the current standard test (ISO 17075) does not guarantee a low release of chromium from the leather or a low release of hexavalent chromium under typical exposure conditions during the service life of the leather. Information, labels, and certificates regarding leather products are often insufficient to protect chromium-allergic individuals. Correct labelling and information on the possible content of different allergens, as well as different tanning alternatives for certain leather products, are crucial. ToxicologieIndex. décimale : 668.1 Agents tensioactifs : savons, détergents Résumé : The choice of purchasing an environmentally friendly or "green" cleaning product appears to be one that consumers are increasingly happy to make, however the reality is that environmentally friendly cleaners may contain ingredients that can adversely affect those people suffering from asthma and allergies. Confirming that a product will not adversely affect a user is not straightforward, there is little point to a cleaning product that is harmless to the consumer but is ineffective in its cleaning performance. However, adhering to strict guidelines regarding allowable concentrations of chemicals and other constituents may allow consumers to purchase a product that is both human (and environment) friendly as well as being effective. We discuss the basis by which cleaners may be assessed for suitability for those with asthma and allergies. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8869
