Protection contre le rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of various nano-particle types and sizes on color, wettability, and surface chemistry of radiata pine (Pinus radiata) sapwood samples were investigated over 6 weeks of outdoor exposure. Specimens were treated with 0.2% wt/wt water dispersions of zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), silica dioxide (SiO2), cerium dioxide (CeO2), and iron oxide (Fe2O3), and four nano-sizes of Fe2O3. Color changes during exposure were characterized by measuring CIE L*a*b* color parameters, surface wettability changes were assessed using water droplet contact angle, and chemical changes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Nano-particles protected wood from photo-discoloration to differing degrees with iron oxide providing the most effective and consistent protection. Smaller alpha Fe2O3 nano-particles provided better UV protection. Nano-particles did not reduce wettability of wood after UV exposure nor were they able to completely prevent lignin degradation. Zinc oxide nano-particles provided some cellulose and hemicellulose protection during UV exposure. Iron oxide nano-particles exhibited some potential for limiting degradation, but the differences were small and not significant from untreated controls. The results suggest that combinations of zinc and iron oxide might be useful for UV protection, and further trials are planned with these mixtures. Réduction (chimie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this article, we present the synthesis of small silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with an average size of 1–20(50) nm. Three formulations of AgNPs-based materials have been obtained and characterized by varying the weight ratio of the silver nitrate/acrylic polymer. AgNPs were prepared by simple chemical reduction method. The reduction of AgNO3 was done by sodium borohydride in the presence of acrylic polymer, which acts also as a capping agent of AgNPs, avoiding the use of additional protective agents. The elemental analysis of AgNPs was quantified by X-ray fluorescence. The morphology and size of AgNPs were characterized by SEM and TEM–HRTEM, while the colloidal stability of AgNPs was demonstrated by zeta potential measurements. The influence of acrylic polymer on the stability of AgNPs, the particle sizes, and their antimicrobial efficacy was investigated. The results confirm that the introduction of acrylic polymer during the synthesis, acting as a stabilizing agent, increases the colloidal stability and antimicrobial performances of these formulations.
Note de contenu : - Sonomuminescence

Traction (mécanique)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Natural leather is the oldest fibre which has been used by man since early times. In recent times, interest has increased in introducing smart properties to natural leather, giving it practical and economic importance. Recently, finishing, the purpose of which is to produce different leather types to meet consumer requirements has become focused on giving the leather properties that make it an advanced material with smart applications. The aim of this work is to produce superior quality leather that would upgrade its value in performance via nano metal oxide treatment. This aim has been followed by synthesising zinc oxide nanoparticles via green chemistry which is then loaded into sheep leather. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesised zinc oxide nanoparticles have been investigated by SEM and XRD. The SEM, EDX, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) study, and tensile properties determination were undertaken, to see if any significant structural or chemical differences could be detected between ʻuntreatedʼ and ʻtreatedʼ leather. From the various analyses, it was ascertained that the nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the leather surface. The study thus provides an eco-friendly method for zinc oxide nanoparticle synthesis which can then be utilised for finishing sheep leather for creating functional properties. In this study, “external aid” and “intrinsic triggering” self-healing coatings have been introduced in detail, including the preparation method, healing mechanism and practical applications. The healing of “external aid” is based on the addition components such as microcapsules containing healing agents and functional nanoparticles, whose ability of self-healing shows the independence with the coating resin. But the finitely additive amount may limit the sustainable use of “external aid” components, and the abundant fillers also change the basic physical properties of the coating. On the contrary, the “intrinsic triggering” resins can form the cover layer in the defects owing to the physical or chemical reactions between the polymer chains, along with the unlimited cycles theoretically. By contrast, the small defects or gaps can be repaired gradually through chain reactions, but the large areas of damage may need the quick release of healing additives in “external aid” coating. In this review, the advances of two kinds of self-healing coatings were analyzed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various healing technologies, and the challenges of development and prospects were also forecasted to provide useful ideas.
