For light duty and industrial maintenance coatings for metal, water reducible alkyds and water dispersible alkyds are acceptable alternatives to solvent-based alkyds. Water-dispersible alkyds are made dispersible by neutralizing the acid moieties of the alkyd with ammonia or water soluble amines such as triehylamine. Water reducible and dispersible alkyds (to a lesser extent) are susceptible to hydrolysis and furthermore destabilization by basic multivalent cations such as those found in corrosion inhibiting pigments. The hydrolytic instability translates to limited storage time. This paper highlights research to develop corrosion inhibitors for both types of waterborne alkyds and adresses strategies to overcome stability problems inherent in these systems. Groupement carboxyle

Revêtements sans isocyanatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A hydroxyl/carboxyl functional low molecular weight polyurethane dispersion was prepared by a nonisocyanate process. It was compared to a conventional high molecular weight polyurethane dispersion in films cured with melamine-formaldehyde resins. Stress-strain studies and solvent swelling experiments were used to characterize network formation and determine crosslink density. The morphology of the films prepared from the two types of polyurethanes were different, and coatings performance advantages were found with the low molecular weight polyurethane dispersion. Surface analysis by FTIR ATR indicates a more uniform distribution of melamine crosslinker in the cured low molecular weight polyurethane coating.

PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The primary aim of this paper is to provide an insight on the effect of the distribution of calcium carbonate nanoparticles (nano-CaCO3) on the isothermal crystallization kinetics in Polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM)/nano-CaCO3 composites prepared by different compounding procedures. PP/EPDM/CaCO3 composites were prepared by two compounding procedures (direct compounding: mixed all three solid materials together; multistep compounding: the melted EPDM/CaCO3 master batch in a single screw extruder blended with melted PP in twin-screw extruder via injecting into the twin-screw extruder from a lateral port at the melting section of the twin-screw extruder). Morphological observation showed that abundant CaCO3 particles concentrated around EPDM dispersed phase in the multistep compounding composite, essentially different from the respectively dispersed morphology of CaCO3 particles and EPDM domains in the matrix for the direct compounding composite. Moreover, better dispersion of CaCO3 particles in the multistep compounding composite was observed comparing to the direct compounding composite. Furthermore, a pronounced improvement of the crystallization half time (t1/2), rate of crystallization (G) was achieved in the multistep compounding composite, which may originate from the better dispersion of CaCO3 particles providing larger nucleation density and the collaborative nucleation of EPDM and CaCO3 during the isothermal crystallization.

SemiconducteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The deposition of coatings of Au and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) on glass, semiconductor silicon, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene substrates was studied. Deposition was carried out using relatively concentrated dispersions of particles in ethanol (approximately 5–10 mM Au, ZnO), which showed limited time resistance to coagulation and sedimentation, but returned to their original dispersed state by ultrasonic treatment before each cycle of deposition of NPs. The NPs of Au and ZnO were stabilized by abietate and acetate ions, respectively. Simple coatings from Au or ZnO NPs and a combined coating from a mixture of Au and ZnO NPs, as well as two-layer combined coatings with alternating layers of Au/ZnO and ZnO/Au NPs, were obtained by drop casting and the proposed method of deposition from the capillary layer of the dispersion with the use of a linker. The formation of coatings on transparent substrates was studied by means of UV–Vis spectroscopy. Coatings were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, PL, UV–Vis and surface resistance methods. The effect of heat treatment on coatings characteristics was tested. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Syntheses - Substrate treatment - Coating deposition methods - Study methods
