However, when I entered the coatings indus¬try nearly 40 years ago, most of us were blissfully ignorant. We assumed that the industry would be 100% waterborne in a few years, including industrial and automotive. Soon, reality set in. I recall working on waterborne industrial coatings that customers wanted to apply via airless spray. Unfortunately, the extremely high pressure exerted through this method causes a great deal of air to be dissolved or otherwise incorporated into waterborne products. On ap¬plication, some of the coatings contained so much air that they actually fizzed like a famous effervescent antacid as air escaped from the film. However, not all of it was released fast enough, resulting in pinholes and bubbles. Several promising formulas had to be abandoned and the customers stayed with solventborne products.

Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Graphene as a two-dimensional nanomaterial has been extensively researched as a new additive to improve barrier performance, reduce corrosion and
extend service life in protective coatings. Previous results have demonstrated significant uplifts in anticorrosive performance in solvent-based coatings using graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), presenting new opportunities for improved protective coatings with extended service life.
However, water-based coating development remains a key focus for industry formulators where there is an ongoing effort to reduce the release of volatile organics and achieve comparable anticorrosion performance to that seen in solvent-based systems.
To date, dispersion of graphene in water-based systems has been problematic, causing coating instability or requiring large amounts of surfactant. A breakthrough technology has been developed that enables easy dispersion in water-based coatings while delivering improved corrosion performance. This development provides an important step to raising waterborne coatings' anticorrosion performance and use.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : dsispersion development and testing - Material & sample preparation

Souplesse (mécanique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborne difunctional polyacrylate with long fluorinated side chains and epoxy groups (WALF) was successfully synthesized and used as emulsifier and reactive surface modifier for epoxy resin. The structure of WALF was characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. In order to investigate the effect of the length and the content of the fluorinated side chains on the properties of the epoxy thermosets, a waterborne difunctional polyacrylate with short fluorinated side chains and epoxy groups (WASF) was developed as a contrast modifier. The waterborne epoxy emulsion modified by WALF or WASF was prepared through phase inversion method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) signified that the waterborne epoxy emulsion has a particle size range of 201.4–590.2 nm, indicating excellent water dispersion property. In addition, the surface properties, thermal properties, and mechanical properties of the waterborne epoxy coating were also analyzed in detail. Compared with WASF, the epoxy coating modified by WALF had higher surface fluorine atomic concentration, lower surface energy, and higher thermal stability.
