A novel resist technique based on secondary amines for the printing of cotton with reactive dyes / David M. Lewis in COLORATION TECHNOLOGY, Vol. 130, N° 6 (12/2014)
[article]
Titre : A novel resist technique based on secondary amines for the printing of cotton with reactive dyes Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David M. Lewis, Auteur ; Peter J. Broadbent, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p. 418-423 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Impression sur étoffesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In an earlier paper we have described sulphite-based resist printing using ink-jet procedures. This paper describes an alternative approach to sulphite inactivation of vinylsulphone dyes by using secondary amines to inactivate fluoro-s-triazine dyes while maintaining the reactivity of the vinylsulphone dyes. Monofluoro-s-triazine reactive dyes are padded onto cotton fabrics and then deactivated by ink-jet printing with a suitable secondary amine formulation to produce a white image on a solid ground colour after appropriate fixation and soap-off procedures have been undertaken. A coloured image can be achieved by overprinting the resist-printed areas with a coloured ink formulation containing a ?-sulphatoethylsulphone-type reactive dye; such dyes form a ?-bis-alkylaminoethylsulphone dye via reaction with the secondary amine. This latter dye ‘unblocks’ during a mildly acidic steaming process to form the reactive vinylsulphone dye, and so, unlike the monofluoro-s-triazine dye, is not deactivated towards subsequent covalent reaction with the cotton substrate. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Development of an environmentally friendly pigment dyeing process with excellent colour depth and levelness is an effective strategy for solving pollution problems in traditional dyeing. A functional polyoxyethylene ether nonionic surfactant, tetradecyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether with an EO chain length of 5 (C14EO5), was used as a foam controller, namely a foaming agent and foam stabiliser, in the pigment foam dyeing process. The foamability and the foam stability of C14EO5 were tunable by adjusting its concentration. The foaming ratio and the foam half-life of C14EO5 were 5.22 and 32.21 min, respectively, at a concentration of 8 wt%. The addition of pigment dispersion (ranging from 1 to 6 wt%) slightly affected the foaming ratio and the foam half-life owing to the interplay of increased viscosity and pigment particle destabilisation. After the influences of binder on foam properties of C14EO5 were investigated, the concentration of binder and the stirring time for foaming were determined as 15 wt% and 7 min respectively. Owing to the stable foaming ratio and foam half-life of the pigment foam dyeing dispersion, the colour depth of dyed cotton fabric was tailored solely by changing the dosage of pigment dispersion. Furthermore, the dyed cotton fabric showed not only a high K/S value but also perfect colour levelness and fastness. These results demonstrate that the pigment foam dyeing process with a foam controller, C14EO5, reduces chemical and water consumptions, as well as improving the colour depth and levelness. This represents a significant step forward as regards environmentally friendly pigment dyeing.

Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In this study, two novel phthalonitrile derivatives were firstly prepared starting from 4-nitrophthalonitrile: substitution of the nitro group with 3-mercaptopropionic acid and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid gave two precursors, namely, 4-(carboxyethylsulphanyl) phthalonitrile and 4-(carboxyphenylsulphanyl)phthalonitrile. Zinc(ii), copper(ii) and cobalt(ii) metallophthalocyanines bearing four carboxylic acid groups on the periphery were prepared by cyclotetramerisation of the new precursors in the presence of the corresponding divalent metal salts. The new compounds were characterised by elemental analyses, infrared, ultraviolet–visible, mass and proton nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. All these newly synthesised water-soluble metallophthalocyanine derivatives were supported on cationic cotton fabrics in the presence of ammonia solution and sodium hydroxide and the dyeing effectiveness, levelness and fastness of these novel dyed fabrics were investigated. These novel dyed fabrics are considered to be useful in the textile industry and also in optical and catalytic applications, especially for air-purifying materials in air conditioners.
Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A one-pot sonochemical irradiation method was developed for the fabrication of superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabric from a solution consisting of branched silica nanoparticles and tetraethoxysilane-dodecyltrimethoxysilane sol. The silica/sol-coated cotton fabric could be wetted by liquids of low surface tension, but was water repellent with a water contact angle of 159 ± 1.2° and water shedding angle of 6 ± 0.8°. The as-prepared cotton fabric could be used as effective materials for the separation of oil from water with separation efficiency as high as 98.2% and maintained separation efficiency above 94% after 30 separation cycles for the kerosene-water mixture. Moreover, the superhydrophobic and superoleophilic cotton fabric could maintain stable superhydrophobicity after treatment with strong acidic and alkali solutions, and harsh mechanical damage. Therefore, this reported robust superhydrophobic cotton fabric exhibits encouraging practical application for oil-water separation. For this purpose, the whiteness index and whiteness tint of optically whitened pre-cationised knitted cotton fabrics were analysed. The cationisation and optical whitening processes were carried out under different concentration levels, using the exhaustion method. The whiteness index and whiteness tint were calculated after colour measurements were taken. The experimental results were also analysed statistically using ANOVA. The whiteness index obtained from cationised fabric was lower than that of non-cationised fabrics. While the whiteness tint of cationised cotton fabric had a blue to greenish nuance, the non-cationised fabric had a reddish nuance. Note de contenu : - Fabric and chemicals
