The influence of CNTs on the performance of the cellulose fiber was investigated using a Raman spectrophotometer, thermogravimetric analyzer, a scanning electron microscope, electrical contacting equipment, and an electromagnetic field detector. The possible interactions between CNTs, a crosslinking agent, and cellulose functional groups at the surface were elucidated by Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the stabilized CNTs modify the surface of the fibers and increase the functionality and thermal stability of the substrate. SEM showed a uniform coating of CNTs on the fiber surface. TiO2-consisting coating compounds were prepared at four different processing temperatures (20, 40, 60, and 80°C) in order to examine the influence of process temperature on average particle size. Among the prepared solutions, the one prepared at 80°C process temperature was selected for the dip coating application of the 100% cotton fabric, which formed a transparent nanosized TiO2 film on the fibrous structure of fabric. Dip coating trials were done at five coating temperatures of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100°C. TiO2-coated and uncoated fabric samples were then tested to evaluate their self-cleaning and antibacterial activities. A self-cleaning activity test was conducted using uncoated and TiO2-coated fabric samples which were stained with hot tea solution via dipping method. Stained fabric samples were illuminated under a solar simulator for the color changes to measure photocatalytic degradation of stain colors. Antibacterial performance of TiO2-coated and uncoated fabric samples was determined against pure cultures of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213. Textiles et tissus à usages techniques -- Propriétés mécaniquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Textiles are known to be the best substrates for growing a variety of microorganisms efficiently at appropriate temperatures and humidity in contact with the human body. Currently, increasing public concern about hygiene has been driving many investigations about antimicrobial surface modification of textiles. The present research reports on the synthesis and characterization of nanosized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) and their application on cotton fabric to increase the bactericidal and hydrophobic properties. The synthesized materials have been subjected to spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations to help in understanding their structure, morphology, size, and composition. Further, upon dispersion of the nanoparticles onto the fabric, its hydrophobicity and mechanical properties were evaluated using electron microscopy and universal testing machine. Treated cotton fabric exhibits higher tensile strength (32 MPa) than the untreated one (27 MPa), whereas copper nanoparticle-coated cotton fabric shows a fair hydrophobicity. Moreover, CuONPs-treated and untreated cotton fabrics have been analyzed for bactericidal activity against various gram-negative and gram-positive strains. Finally, the CuONPs-coated cotton fabric displays greater antibacterial activity against E. coli and exhibits superior antimicrobial activity even after 30 cycles of washing, indicating that the CuONPs-coated cotton fabric has a higher potential to be employed as a medical textile to avoid cross-infection within a clinical environment.

PeroxydesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : This paper reports on a new technology for bleaching cellulosic textiles. The technology is based on the use of a substituted guanidine additive in a peroxide bleaching system. We have discovered that the addition of an asymmetrically substituted alkyl or acyl guanidine to the peroxide bleaching process significantly enhances the bleaching performance, leading to a whiter and brighter end-product. The new process allows effective bleaching of cellulosic textiles to be achieved under relatively mild conditions, preserving the desirable qualities of bleached substrates. In this paper, the guanidine-based activators are compared with tetra-acetylethylenediamine, one of the most popular activators currently on the market. Teinture -- Fibres textilesIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Landfills are becoming the most common way to dispose textiles. The presence of different types of dyes and finishes on textiles fabrics can become an important source of pollution during the degradation process, due to the fact that these chemicals can leach to the soil. The biodegradation of dyes from dyed fabrics is not fully understood, and what can leach into the soil can be more toxic. In this study, cotton fabrics were dyed with CI Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) and biodegraded in soil in a laboratory-controlled environment for a 90-day time interval by using the ASTM D 5988-18 method. A modified QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction method, in combination with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, was applied to soil containing RB19 after the degradation process. An unknown degradation product, with a mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of 393, found in the soil was characterised and confirmed, via high-resolution MS and tandem MS, to be CI Acid Blue 25 (AB25). To quantify the confirmed unknown product extracted from the degraded soil sample, a quantitation method was developed using high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-MS). The quantitation method provided excellent linearity (R2 = 0.9990 ± 0.0006), accuracy (mean percentage error = 5.17 ± 1.88), precision (mean percentage coefficient of variation = 4.73 ± 4.16), and sensitivity (lower limit of quantitation = 1.29 ± 0.47 µg/mL) for nine concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 40 µg/mL.
