Corrosion protection of aluminum 6061 in NaCl solution by silane–zeolite composite coatings / Luigi Calabrese in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 9, N° 5 (09/2012)
[article]
Titre : Corrosion protection of aluminum 6061 in NaCl solution by silane–zeolite composite coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Luigi Calabrese, Auteur ; Lucio Bonaccorsi, Auteur ; Edoardo Proverbio, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : p. 597-607 Note générale : Bibliogr.

ZéolitesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Anticorrosion properties of silane–zeolite composite coatings applied on aluminum substrates have been investigated. The composite coatings were prepared with different zeolite microparticles concentration (from 500 to 8000 ppm). Physico-chemical tests (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, adhesion, scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle measurements) have been carried out to evaluate the homogeneity and structural properties of the coatings. The coatings that resulted were highly hydrophobic for all zeolite contents and showed a relatively good adhesion performance. Corrosion protection performances in 3.5% NaCl solution were evaluated by means of polarization tests, evidencing good barrier characteristics of the composite layer.

Structure chimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Organic–inorganic hybrid (OIH) thin films derived from the sol–gel process have emerged as sustainable metal pretreatment alternatives to toxic heavy metal-based systems. In recent years, such OIH systems based on Si, Zr, and Ti have been successfully developed and commercialized for pretreatment of aluminum alloys, galvanized steel, cold-rolled steel, and many other metals and alloys, for improving adhesion and corrosion resistance performance. A variety of approaches are being used to further enhance performance of such OIH systems to match or surpass that obtained from chromate-based systems. In the present study, a novel bis-silane compound has been synthesized and used as a primary sol–gel precursor for OIH coatings. In order to further improve their mechanical and corrosion resistance performance, colloidal nanoparticles have been incorporated. The microstructure of the deposited films as a function of their composition and formation of Si–O–Si structural network has been studied by Confocal Raman spectroscopic technique. The chemical structure of the OIH films has been characterized by FTIR analysis. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, DC polarization measurements, and accelerated neutral salt-fog test (ASTM B117) have been used to evaluate corrosion resistance performance of coatings on industrial aluminum alloy AA 3003 H14. Nano-indentation tests of these OIH films have been performed to study the effect of colloidal nanoparticles on coating micro/nano structure and their mechanical properties. The study reveals that colloidal nanoparticles improve the corrosion resistance of OIH coatings by formation of a protective barrier to diffusion of corrosive species to the metal surface. The optimum content of colloidal nanoparticles that can provide best corrosion protection has been determined. Electrochemical study provides useful insight into the significance of interaction between the sol–gel hybrid and silica particles in the corrosion protection mechanism. Oxyde de graphèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Zinc aluminum hydrotalcite/graphene oxide (HTC-GO) nanohybrid as inhibition additive for organic coatings was prepared using the co-precipitation method. The synthesized HTC-GO was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Surface charge properties of HTC-GO were evaluated with zeta potential measurement. The corrosion inhibition effect of HTC-GO on carbon steel in NaCl solution was investigated using electrochemical methods, energy-dispersive X-ray, and SEM. The effect of HTC-GO on corrosion resistance of epoxy coating applied on carbon steel was evaluated by salt spray test. It was shown that hydrotalcite structures were formed on GO surface, subsequently becoming hydrotalcite/graphene oxide nanohybrid. The results obtained by electrochemical measurements indicate that HTC-GO is an anodic corrosion inhibitor with an inhibition efficiency of about 92% at 1 g/L concentration. The presence of intercalated GO improved the barrier properties and adsorption of HTC-GO on steel surface. The corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings was improved with 1 wt% HTC-GO. Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Silicone-modified epoxy polymeric matrix was successfully fabricated and reinforced with 1–2 wt% SiO2, TiO2, and TiSiO4 nanoparticles. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy together with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to investigate different characteristics of the prepared coatings. To simulate operating conditions, all samples were characterized via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) after being subjected to different conditions. Corrosion under static conditions, in which the samples were exposed to a static electrolyte without further change in other parameters, was investigated. Furthermore, to study the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in accelerating the degradation of the coatings, samples were characterized after being subjected to UV while immersed statically in the electrolyte. Additionally, the corrosion protection performance was investigated after subjecting the coated substrates to dynamic conditions involving continuous movement of the sample in the electrolyte, simulating continuous wear of the coated surfaces. Compared with the static condition, the EIS results revealed the vital role of the silicone resin and nanoparticles in improving the stability of the coating film against corrosion degradation in the presence of UV radiation, while poor performance in dynamic condition was recorded for all the coating systems.
