To improve embedding of the nanofillers within the acrylate matrix the filler surface was chemically modified. This modification of the silica and alumina nanoparticles was accomplished by trimethoxylanes having methacryloxypropyl (MEMO), vinyl (VTMO), and n-propyl (PTMO) functionalities. Due to acid catalyzed condensation of organosilanes a polysiloxane shell was formed around the nanoparticles. This shell is bonded to OH groups on the filler surface. The appearance of covalent Si-O-Si-R bonds was clearly shown by multinuclear MAS NMR. MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy revealed the formation of polysiloxane oligomers with different degrees of condensation. In the work presented, an acrylate-nanocomposite formulation contains up to 35 wt.% nanosized silica covered with polysiloxanes. For MEMO modification, surface-anchored methacryl gropus can copolymerize with network acryaltes. But also PTMO-modified composite materials exhibit markedly improved improved properties as compared to the neat acrylate polymer ; e.g., an increased modulus and heat resistance, improved scratch and abrasion resistance. This makes polyacrylate nanocomposites a very promising new coating technology for many far reaching technical applications.
- le modèle poupée russe: les plans de graphène sont arrangés en cylindres concentriques ;
PolypropylèneIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : This study dealt with operating windows and scale-up rules of a compounding twin screw extruder for polypropylene (PP) /multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) composites with required conductivity. In this study we showed that the experimentally obtained boundary line separating either conductive or non-conductive region is essentially linear, and thus the operating windows, in which the PP/MWCNT composite is consistently conductive with statistically 95% reliability level, can be drawn as a triangle. The use of this triangle rule of the operating windows to achieve required volume resistivity was proposed. With similarity of the length and diameter ratio (L/D) and screw configuration between small (laboratory-scale) and large (production-scale)) extruders, our investigation revealed that the most effective scale-up factors for the volume resistivity are (Dlarge/Dsmall)3 for the throughput, and (Dsmall/Dlarge) for the screw speed as a new scale-up rule generally valid for any machine size. MMT clay was rendered organophilic by a styryl/oil functionalized intercalant which is compatible with the two matrices and able to participate in the polymerization/crosslinking reaction. The presence of styryl group in the intercalant is also thought to be an original solution to the drawback mentioned in the literature arising from higher amount of small styrene monomer molecules in the clay galleries than larger AESO molecules at high clay loadings. The current design of the intercalant is expected to allow polymer molecules grown from both AESO and styrene monomers inside the clay galleries and also from edges/surfaces of the silicate layers. In this study, a special attention was paid to the enhancement of both thermal and mechanical properties of AESO-based nanocomposites via usage of the compatible and reactive intercalant for MMT modification. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of increased nanoclay loading in thermal and mechanical properties was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The nanocomposite materials exhibited improved thermal stability and dynamic mechanical properties as compared to neat polymer. The nanocomposite with exfoliation dominant structural morphology showed the highest storage modulus around Tg which is about 480% higher than that of neat AESOPS, even with a clay content as low as 3 wt%.
Sol-gel, ProcédéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new type of UV-curable organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer was synthesized from vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), tetraethylorthosilicate, and colloidal silica (CS) using a sol–gel method. UV-curable hybrid hard coating formulations were then prepared by mixing the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer and acrylic monomers, trimethylolpropane triacrylate and tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate, with a levelling agent and a photoinitiator. The oligomer was hydrolyzed and condensed from alkoxysilane and CS to obtain the UV-cured hybrid films. The hybrid oligomer and resulting hybrid films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry to confirm the chemical functionality, oxo-silicon signal, cross-sectional morphology, and transparency, respectively. When the concentration of the CS/VTMS mixture in the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer was 0.50 mol, remarkable pencil hardness (up to 5H) with excellent transparency was observed. The hardness and transparency of the UV-cured hybrid coating films were improved significantly by increasing the CS content in the organic–inorganic hybrid oligomer. Note de contenu : - Viscosity
