The use of particles in fibre-reinforced composite structures usually improves the strength of the basic material. Alumina (Al2O3), with its unique properties, has been used to improve the composite material's properties. It is crucial to determine the appropriate concentration of Al2O3 particles that can be added to Polypropylene whisker/epoxy composites to get the required mechanical and physical properties. In this study lamination 80:20 resin was used as a matrix material to prepare a Polypropylene whisker (3%wt.) reinforced lamination 80:20 resin (PP/resin) composite. The composite materials were manufactured by hand lay-up method. Different concentrations (1, 3, 5, 7 & 10wt.%) of alumina (Al2O3) particles, were used to reinforce the composite. The composite materials are prepared with standard sizes according to the tests, the tests include mechanical tests (tensile, impact, and hardness test) and physical tests (water absorption and density). The tests results showed an improvement in tensile strength, elongation, toughness, fracture toughness, hardness and density, while the water absorption diminishes concerning an increase in the concentration of the Al2O3 particles. The tensile strength, elongation, elastic modulus, hardness and density improved from (17 MPa, 1.3%, 1.13GPa, 70 Shore D and 0.93gm/cm3) respectively for neat lamina and reach the maximum value (34.5 MPa, 3.1%, 1.47 GPa, 83 Shore D and 1.01 gm/cm3) respectively at (3%wt. PP and 10%wt. Al2O3), while the toughness and fracture toughness improved from (3.8 KJ/m2 and 0.06 MPa.m1/2) respectively for neat lamina and reach the maximum value (23.1 KJ/m2 and 0.19 MPa.m1/2) respectively at (3%wt. PP and 7%wt. Al2O3). Note de contenu : - Materials and Methods

Epoxy nanocomposites with different weight fractions were fabricated using a wet layup process followed by furnace heating to remove the residual moisture content. The influence of surface modified sugarcane nanocellulose fiber loading on morphological (transmission electron microscope) properties of epoxy nanocomposites was investigated. The porosity and water absorption increase with the increment in fiber weight fraction for both treated and untreated nanocellulose fiber-epoxy composites. Among the various treatment processes, the alkali-treated fibers reinforced epoxy composites showed better thermal stability and water absorption resistance under 10 wt.% of nanocellulose fiber reinforcement.

ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : In this study, polymer-hybrid natural fibers composites were prepared using unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) as the matrix and a filler using date palm leaf fiber (DPLF) and orange peel fiber (OPF). The effect of DPLF and OPF on mechanical behavior (tensile strength and elongation at break), moisture absorption, UPR gel time (tgel) and peak exothermic temperature (Tpeak) were determined. The composites of UPR reinforced with DPLF and OPF were processed by hand lay-up technique. The UPR weight fraction was maintained at 90%, and DPLF/OPF proportions varied so that the percentage of natural fiber was 10 wt%. Seven (07) composites were prepared (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7) with different DPLF:OPF ratios (0:0, 1:0, 0.75:0.25, 0.5:0.5, 0.33:0.67, 0.25:0.75, 0:1) respectively in order to screen the possible interactions. DPLF were surface modified using 6% Alkali treatment, OPF were used without surface modification. Unlike DPLF, OPF showed considerable increase of UPR tgel and Tpeak which act as natural inhibitor. Tensile strength and fracture strength were also impacted negatively and positively depending on the different fiber proportions. Absorption tests showed a decrease in the composites hydrophobicity which increases significantly with higher DPLF proportions. Matériaux hybridesIndex. décimale : 668.4 Plastiques, vinyles Résumé : The production of bio-composites based on vulcanized rubber reinforced by natural fibers has been widely studied. However, the aging phenomenon occurring during the long-term storage generating irreversible damage is limiting the performance of this kind of composites which has not been studied in details. So the objective of this work was to characterize and understand the structure-mechanical property relationships in these bio-composites and to correlate the effective crosslinking density with physical aging as a function of fiber content (0, 20, 30 and 40 wt.%) and fiber surface modification (alkali treatment) for the system polyisoprene (PI) and coir fibers. Furthermore, interfacial adhesion was improved by using maleic anhydride grafted polyisoprene as a coupling agent. From the samples produced, a complete set of morphological (scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical (shear and tension) characterization was performed before and after natural aging. The results showed that the tensile modulus increased with fiber content for the range of conditions studied and the presence of a coupling agent always gave higher tensile strength due to better interfacial stress transfer. However, important elasticity loss (strain at break) was observed due to the low fiber elasticity. Finally, different physical aging mechanisms led to changes in the molecular configuration and a reduction of free volume caused by a post-curing phenomenon of the polyisoprene matrix and low environmental stability of the fibers. These phenomena were shown to increase the Young's modulus of the neat matrix by eight times compared to the unaged neat polyisoprene, but a smaller variation (five times) was observed for the bio-composites which was related to different crosslinking density and coir fibers state of dispersion in the vulcanized matrix.
