The simplified viscocapillary model derived from the 2D equation of motion with the shear-thinning Carreau liquids bounds the uniform coating regime without defects such as leaking, bead break-up, and mid-gap invasion in dual-layer coating systems. The coating bead flows from experiments and finite-volume-based 2D simulations with the volume-of-fluid scheme demonstrate the performance of the viscocapillary model in reliably tracking the upstream meniscus position of the bottom layer in the coating bead region. The onset of leaking, bead break-up, and mid-gap invasion defects is strongly affected by the rheological properties of Carreau-type coating liquids and the flow ratio between the top and bottom layers. In particular, the relative thickness of the shear-thinning bottom layer at the onset of mid-gap invasion is smaller than the well-known 1/3 value in the Newtonian case, depending on the degree of shear thinning. For this, GCC (ground calcium carbonate), PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) and ECC (eggshell calcium carbonate), which have been tried as new coating materials in recent years, are mixed in different proportions to form a different coated formulation and plastered on the newly produced paper surface. Then, optical and physical tests of the obtained samples are carried out. Then, printing properties of the papers on which drop-on-demand system inkjet printing is made are examined. According to the obtained data, it is determined that the optical properties of coated paper with GCC + PCC blends outperformed papers coated with other blends. According to the physical test results, GCC + PCC blended coated papers showed the best performance in breaking length and tear indices. ECC + PCC blended coated papers however showed the best performance in burst indices. It is determined that as the particle size of the calcium carbonates in the coating materials decreased, the burst indices value also decreased. This situation is the opposite for breaking length and tear indices values. When the inkjet printing features are examined, it is seen that the best results are obtained from GCC + ECC coated papers in general. The most optimal metamerism indices results, measured under three different light sources, are obtained on GCC + PCC coated papers. Note de contenu : - Optical-physical properties of specimens

Système de libération contrôlée (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the major nutrients solicited in the fertilization process, and their supply is highly useful to improve agricultural productivity. The conventional fertilizers suffer from low efficacy due to the fast release of nutrients. For that, the coating of granular fertilizer is considered as the best way to enhance their efficiency. Nowadays, biodegradable polymers are replacing synthetic polymers and avoiding the accumulation of nondegradable plastic residues in arable land. Since the coating of fertilizers by sulfur was criticized, many research studies investigated the use of polysaccharide such as cellulose, chitosan, carrageenan, lignin, and starch or aliphatic polyesters such as polylactide and polycaprolactone as coating matrix for granular fertilizer coating to delay or control the dissolution rate of nutrients. This review starts by apprising the readers about the environmental impact of conventional fertilizers (uncoated) and then an overview on the use of all those biopolymers and their combination for the coating agent mineral fertilizer. Furthermore, the present contribution provides an outline on different coating processes solicited in the field and the slow-release fertilizers criteria.

ThermographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In civil construction, intumescent coatings are widely used in steel structures, because in a fire, this material loses approximately half of its elastic modulus at 500°C. The use of these paints is essential to ensure the structural safety of the construction as well as that of humans. The phenomenon of intumescence in paints occurs when they are subjected to high temperatures forming a carbonaceous layer that expands on the surface of the coating, with the main purpose of serving as a thermal insulator of the substrate. The development of paints with low impact on the environment has been stimulated due to restrictions on the emission of volatile organic compounds imposed by government agencies. Therefore, the development of water-based intumescent paints has become essential to meet these guidelines. In the present work, intumescent coatings were developed with different water-based resins: epoxy, acrylic and alkyd. The paints were formulated using expandable graphite as a blowing agent and expanded char source, ammonium polyphosphate as an acid source and lignin as a carbon source. The formulations were applied to steel substrates and exposed to burning tests to verify fire resistance, and in addition, the samples were characterized by combustion microcalorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The carbonaceous layers were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with dispersive energy spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results of combustion microcalorimetry showed that the formulations containing lignin released less heat than the others. No toxic gases were detected in the pyrolysis of epoxy and acrylic system paints. The X-ray diffraction and Raman analyses proved the formation of thermally stable compounds in the carbonaceous layer. TaninsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of intumescent coatings based on chemically modified tannin in passive fire protection. For this purpose, chemical modification of tannins was carried out with phosphorus pentoxide or phytic acid. Following this, a set of paints were formulated, each of which contained one of the tannins in combination with expandable graphite and ammonium polyphosphate as pigments. The chemical modification of the tannins was evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, and the thermal protection of mild steel samples coated with the prepared organic coatings was evaluated after the exposure of samples to a Bunsen torch. During the tests, temperature data and thermographic images of the steel surface were collected. The coatings and the chemically modified tannins were also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimetry. It was found that all coatings provided good fire protection, and the temperature of the steel substrate after 30 min of the experiment did not exceed 130°C in the formulations where only the chemically modified tannin with the expandable graphite was used.
