Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is an increased demand for abrasive wear-resistant coatings that add durability to steel hydraulic structures, particularly for those subjected to flowing water with debris and alternate wet/dry cycles. These coating systems provide not only corrosion and chemical resistance, but also good erosion and abrasion resistance to the metallic surfaces, which are constantly exposed to flowing water containing sand particles and debris. Generally, vinyl-based coatings are used on hydraulic steel structures to protect them from corrosion and abrasion. However, due to the existence of high water force and debris, the coating is abraded at a faster rate leading to significant maintenance and repair costs. In this study, abrasive wear resistance of conventional vinyl-based coating systems currently used on lock and dam steel structures by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been compared with polymer matrix composite coatings, fibrous polymer coatings, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Six coating systems were evaluated through two-body abrasion tests using a reciprocating abrader under dry and wet conditions. Furthermore, wettability of the coating systems and its effect on the wear rate under the presence of water was studied. In addition, scanning electron microscopy of the wear tracks on different coatings was conducted to study and identify their failure mechanisms. Based on the results, UHMWPE and polymer–ceramic composite coatings were found to perform significantly better than the conventional vinyl-based coatings. One coating was a conventional primer high-gloss (HG) polyurethane topcoat, and the other was a single ‘self-priming’ (SP) polyurethane coating. Both coating surfaces oxidised from the exposure, but the coating bulk remained intact. Cracks developed in the ‘self-priming’ coating surface, but it remained adhering. The other topcoat showed good weathering resistance, but its primer lost adhesion after exposure. Both coatings initially developed nanoblisters, then increasing surface roughness. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed similar corrosion-protective properties during much of the exposure. Evidently, electrochemical measurements alone are not sufficient to monitor deterioration in corrosion-protective coatings. Note de contenu : - Sample preparations

Revêtements protecteursIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Industries that work with acidic chemicals in their processes need to make choices on how to properly contain the substances and avoid rapid corrosion of equipment. Certain organic coatings and linings can be used in such environments, either to protect vulnerable construction materials, or, in combination with fiber reinforcement, to replace them. However, degradation mechanisms of organic coatings in acid service are not thoroughly understood and relevant quantitative investigations are scarce. This review describes the uses and limitations of acid-resistant coatings in the chemical industry, with a comparison to alternative resistant materials based on metals or ceramics. In addition, coating degradation phenomena, caused by acid exposure, are mapped to the extent possible, and analysis methods for detecting coating degradation type and severity are listed and discussed. It is concluded that more knowledge on chemical and physical degradation mechanisms is required, and that improvements in resistance to elevated temperatures and abrasion would decrease the risk of use and increase the potential application areas of organic coatings exposed to acidic environments in the chemical industry.
