There is a continuous development of newer methods and materials to prevent its effects on them. Nowadays, a lot of attention is being paid in the design of public and commercial buildings by incorporating fire safety. Passive fireproofing of high-rise structures has become very important due to the use of steel in load bearing mode and has attracted increased attention after the collapse of the WTC towers. Conventional passive fireproofing materials include concrete covering, gypsum board and cementitious coatings which have a poor aesthetic. Intumescent fire-resistive coatings are a newer type of passive fireproofing coatings usually applied as thin film and they swell many times their original thickness forming an insulating char which acts as a barrier between the fire and the structural steel. It prevents the temperatures of the steel members from reaching a critical value and helps in maintaining the integrity of the structure in fire event. They are the preferred choice for passive fire protection of load bearing steel frame structures of architects and designers as they offer aesthetic appearance, flexibility, speed of application, and ease of inspection and maintenance. The present review covers recent developments in the field of intumescent coatings with a major emphasis on organic intumescent coatings. The role of various ingredients, their interactions in intumescent coatings, effects of various pigments, binders and additives are discussed briefly. Revêtements en phase aqueuse -- Additifs:Peinture en phase aqueuse -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : With strict environmental legislation seeking to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC), new latex binders are being developed with low glass transition temperatures, to be used in formulating low- and zero- VOC paints. Lower-VOC paints are expected to meet the same performance requirements as traditional paints. However, the open time or wet-edge time of low/zero-VOC aqueous coatings is a major challenge during application when cosolvents or coalescing agents are eliminated from the formulations.
In this study, a series of new additives was developed to extend the open time of low/zero-VOC binders and latex paints. The effects of this additive on the open time of low/zero-VOC waterborne paints with different binders were investigated. Factors related to open time, including viscosity, PVC, film thickness, and substrates, were studied. The results indicated that the additives are effective in extending open time by two to five times. In addition, other properties of low/zero-VOC paints such as freeze/thaw stability, film gloss, stain removal, tint strength, wet adhesion, and scrub resistance were evaluated.
Various techniques have been employed to characterize open time and wet-edge time. A new method was developed to characterize open time/wet-edge time and the film formation process. Correlations among film formation, physical properties, and coating performances are discussed.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Substrates - Instruments - paint formulations - Paint evaluation and properties measurements

Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The coatings industry has undergone significant transformations in recent years due to the replacement of organic solvent-based coatings by waterborne emulsion latex polymer coatings. Waterborne technology has generated profound impact in industry and everyday life, producing great environmental and health benefits. The prevalence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in coatings has been greatly reduced, from 700 g/L in the 1940s to ~ 50 g/L in the 2010s. Although waterborne coatings offer considerable benefits, challenges remain in areas such as water resistance, stability, film formation, and surface hardness, which can affect their overall performance and application. These challenges are primarily caused by the conflicting requirements for desired properties before and after the coating dries. To maintain a stable dispersion before application, latex particles should be fully dispersible in water, i.e., hydrophilic. However, after the coating dries, water repellence, or hydrophobicity, is required. Thus, a solution that can maintain predominantly hydrophilic dispersion while rendering a hydrophobic surface after drying is necessary to make waterborne coating technology more versatile. In addition, a durable coating film demands excellent adhesion on the substrate surface, while showing good hardness (low tackiness) at the coating-air interface. This means it is beneficial to possess different or even opposite properties on the two sides of the coating films. Note de contenu : - Synthesis of PS-co-PVA hydrophilic nanoparticles

Revêtements -- Additifs:Peinture -- AdditifsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : From overcoming the challenges presented by the Biocide Products Directive to conquering bacterial hygiene issues and meeting the demands of an educated consumer, the coatings market is filled with opportunities and innovations for future products and applications. Face with and escalating regulatory climate, the ever-present threat of bacterial hygiene challenges and a generation of more savvy consumers, the international coatings industry may well be on the brink of one of its most challenging eras. The European Unions (EU) Biocide Products Directive (BPD) alone has the potential to vastly and irrevocably alter the industry's current landscape by presenting unprecedented reformulation challenges. This, coupled with tough bacterial hygiene issues such as biocide resistance and tolerance, and more sophisticated consumer demands, such as those for antimicrobial paints, has created a climate of change and uncertainty. One constant, however, will be the need for innovative products and their creative application. Note de contenu : - Biocide Innovations
