The correct terminology should thus be a resin dispersion but, for the sake of convenience, will always be referred to as "emulsion".
Aqueous polymers exist as three specific types. These types vary very significantly in both physical and mechani-cal properties. These three types are aqueous dispersions or emulsions, colloidal dispersions and true solutions.
Aqueous dispersions, or emulsions as they are commonly known, can be defined as discrete particles of high molecular weight polymer dispersed in an aqueous medium. The solid polymer is known as the disperse phase, while the water is the disperse medium.
Colloidal dispersions can be considered to be ultra-fine particles or molecular weight intermediates between that of aqueous dispersions and true solutions. The polymers contain polar groups, either acidic or basic, which do impart some degree of solubility. The colloidal dispersions can also be considered as hybrids of dispersions and true solutions, in that they possess properties which are common and characteristic of both types. True solutions, or water reducible resins, are polymers in which polymerisation reactions are performed in water miscible organic solvents such as esters and alcohols, or solubilised by the addition of alkali, i.e. neutralisation. Solubility is also attributed to polar groups on the polymer side chains. The polymers are thus totally soluble in the medium water.
The above generalisation will thus suffice to explain the varions "states" in which aqueous polymers are available. Emulsions find application in the function as binders or topcoats for leather finishing, while colloidal dispersions are used to a smaller extent as thickeners for the finish mixes and more commonly, as pasting adhesives. Water reducible urethane lacquers are also the colloidal dispersions type. True solutions are not currently used in leather finishing but are in the paint industry, particularly the automotive and appliance industries.Note de contenu : - TYPES OF EMULSIONS

SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : The use of microplastics in cosmetic surfactant formulations represents an increasing ecological problem. As a natural alternative the polymers examined in this work, guar gum, cationic guar gum and xanthan gum can be used as thickening agent or as stabiliser of emulsions. The rheology changed by the polymer-based gelling agent also influences the foam properties as well as the stability of the product. This is why the compatibility of several natural polymers were analysed with two different surfactant systems (anionic non-ionic surfactant system and amphoteric non-ionic surfactant system) for the specific application parameters such as the foaming behaviour, the foam stability and the foam structure and its aging. The influence of electrolytes was also analysed on the example of sodium chloride (NaCI) and then compared with the foam properties of the polymer-based gelling agent. The foam analytics was carried out using the Dynamic Foam Analyzer DFA100 (KRÃœSS GmbH). In doing so, the recently released Foam Flash Method is presented and used, a method that is particularly good for the analysis of the foaming behaviour of strongly foaming surfactant solutions.
The addition of the polymer-based gelling agent to the surfactant systems had a substantial improvement to the foam formation and the foam stability, and significant influence on the foam structure. The strongest effects were shown by xanthan gum. It is also shown that the influence of individual gelling agent on the foaming behaviour depends strongly on the characteristics of the surfactant system.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION : Foam in surfactant solutions

RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Pemulens® (BF Goodrich) are hydrophobically-modified copolymers of acrylic acid (Acrylates/C10–C30 alkyl acrylates) that could act both as primary emulsifiers for o/w emulsions and viscosity enhancing agents. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of different processing conditions (mixing equipment, speed and time of agitation) on the aesthetic characteristics, viscosity and physical stability of o/w emulsion gels based on the polymeric emulsifier (Pemulen TR-2 NF). This objective was achieved by applying a two-factor three-level experimental design at two sets: using a laboratory mixer and a disperser. Independent variables were mixing speed and time and dependant variables i.e. responses, were millimetres of oil phase separated after centrifugation at 3500 rpm in a laboratory centrifuge, and viscosity at shear rate 180 l/s. The responses were fitted into a second order model by means of a multiple regression analysis. For the samples prepared on the laboratory mixer it was shown that mixing time and speed produce a statistically important influence on viscosity, but not on physical stability: with increasing mixing speed and time the viscosity linearly increases. If we assume that greater energy input obtained by increasing the mixing speed and time produces a decrease in drop size and polydispersity and better developed gel network, then the optimal processing conditions will be at the point where maximal viscosity is attained. This result was in accordance with the centrifugation test – the best stability appeared when maximal mixing speed and time were applied, although this effect appeared not to be statistically significant. For samples prepared using dispersers no statistically important influence of processing variables on viscosity and physical stability was found. Additionally, emulsion samples prepared using the laboratory mixer appeared homogenous, while in samples prepared using the disperser, undispersed polymer lumps appeared. Based on physical characteristics of the emulsions, it could be concluded that the disperser is an inappropriate tool for processing the emulsions based on Pemulen polymers.
Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Synthetic and analytical methods
