In this study, we examined how crosslinking reactions of hexamethylene diisocyanate isocyanurate and polyacrylate near the film-air (F-A) and film-substrate (F-S) interfaces in urethane coatings may affect crosslink density as well as other network properties. While at the initial stages of the crosslinking reactions, solvent evaporation competes with the urethane network formation and isocyanate consumption changes at various depths from the F-A and F-S interfaces. Quantitative analysis of the NCO consumption as a function of depth showed that the NCO concentrations change from 2.35 x 10-5 to 2.09 x 10-5 M, while going from 0.27 to 1.14 μm. During reaction times not exceeding two to three hours, the NCO consumption at the F-A and F-S interfaces is consumed more rapidly. At low relative humidity conditions, excessive amounts of unreacted NCO exists at both the F-A and F-S interfaces. However, at the extended reaction times, NCO concentration levels at the F-S are greater than at the F-A interface, and the NCO concentration differences can be as high as 3 x 10-5 M. In this study we also examined how crosslinking reactions of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) isocyanurate and polyacrylate near the F-S interfaces in urethane films may affect orientation and distribution of urethane functionalities. The monofunctional sulphonyl chlorides increased the viscosity of the collagen solution, probably due to aggregation of molecules facilitated by hydrophobic bonds. However, the very high viscosity observed in the case of disulphonyl chlorides with collagen indicates that inter-molecular cross-links are formed with these reagents. From dissolution temperatures and polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns, it is considered that disulphonyl chlorides can introduce intra- and inter-molecular cross-links in collagen under suitable conditions. Revêtements poudreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Acrylic powder coatings are environmentally friendly, solvent-free solid coatings with excellent durability and corrosion resistance that protect substrates from corrosive environments. The curing behavior of acrylic powder coatings affects the coating film properties. In this study, a catalyst was used to control the curing conversion rate, and the curing characteristics and physical properties were compared for coatings with and without the catalyst. Differential scanning calorimetry and an isoconversional method were used to obtain activation energies, and the conversion rate under different isothermal conditions was computed. Notably, complete curing could not be achieved without the catalyst; however, the catalyst-containing coating was entirely cured. With sufficient curing established, the addition of the catalyst was found to increase the adhesion, impact resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, the recoatability was reduced owing to a lack of unreacted monomers on the surface of the catalyst-containing coating film, as verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In general, the addition of a catalyst to acrylic powder coatings enabled complete curing and enhanced most physical properties, offering an improved formulation for applications across high-corrosion environments. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Latexes have many product applications including functioning as a binder in coatings. For many years, coatings researchers in industry as well as in academe have been exploring various modes of crosslinking latexes. Quite often, the goal of preparing crosslinked latexes is to upgrade film properties relative to the film properties of uncrosslinked latexes. In the present report, the synthesis and properties of crosslinkable acrylic latexes prepared with either an internal crosslinker (1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate)—"precoalescence crosslinking"—or an external crosslinker (adipic dihydrazide)—"postcoalescence crosslinking"—at various levels of crosslinking were studied. For postcoalescence crosslinking, diacetone acrylamide was copolymerized into the latex to provide sites for subsequent reaction with adipic dihydrazide. Fundamental properties of films cast from the two types of latexes were systematically compared. These properties included gel content, dynamic mechanical properties, nano-indenter hardness and modulus, stress–strain properties as well as the characterization of latex morphology by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, some specific end-use properties were determined. This study assesses the effect of type (precoalescence or postcoalescence) and level of crosslinking on the film formation process and the resulting fundamental and end-use properties as well as resulting latex film morphology. The effects of photoinitiators on the curing reaction and the influence of polyol types and dimethylopropionic acid (DMPA) amounts on the properties of UV curable coatings prepared by free radical polymerization (UVF) were investigated. The effects of polymerization (UVC) and the consequences of postcuring conditions on the properties of UVC were evaluated. The interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) containing UV curable coatings (UVIPN), which were composed of UVF and UVC at different ratios (by weight), were prepared. The properties of UVIPN with varied UVF/UVC ratios were studied.
