StatistiqueIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Construction markets continue to grow, along with the demand for the required material categories such as wood adhesives. An increased industry focus on compliance with emission regulations and other environmental standards is driving developments, as well as the increasing overall interest in more sustainable adhesive technologies. The use of feedstocks such as bio-based building blocks in adhesive components is part of that interest, with a special focus on sources from fungible feedstocks, sustainable production, and the potential to achieve sufficient scale.
Emerging new adhesive formulations utilize various natural or bio-derived materials such as proteins, lignins, or starch derivatives for particleboard (PB), medium- and high-density fiberboard (MDF and HDF, respectively), plywood, and oriented-strand board (OSB). Typically, these types of materials are structurally ill defined, with high compositional variability, and are often based on regional, seasonal, and overall constrained supply chains.Note de contenu : - Wood adhesive technologies

Different volume fractions (Vf%) of distinctive natural (white clay (W) and red clay (R)) and synthetic (alumina (A) and woven glass fibers (E-GFW) reinforcing unsaturated polyester (UP). The mechanical and physical characterizations of these innovative HCs were estimated according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The findings show that adding more white clay, red clay, and alumina to the HCs makes a big difference in improving their mechanical properties, such as Hardness Shore D (HSD), True Tensile Strength (Ttσ), Impact Strength (iσ), and Fracture Toughness (Kc). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed noteworthy variations in the assessed parameters, emphasizing the potential suitability of these materials for aeronautical applications. This research contributes to the ongoing progress in material engineering, specifically in enhancing the mechanical resilience of composites utilized in the aerospace industry.

The enzymolysis conditions were optimised via a single-factor experiment and response surface methodology (RSM) using the FRSA as the optimisation index. The optimal enzymolysis conditions were as follows: the optimal enzyme was alkaline protease, the enzymolysis pH was 8.7, the dosage of alkaline protease was 8000U/g, the temperature was 50°C, the time was 5 hours, the concentration of substrate was 5%. The FRSAs of hydroxyl, DPPH and superoxide anion radicals of the optimally prepared YCDP could be up to 39.63%, 71.08% and 69.93%, respectively, which were higher than those of CDP prepared from cattle hide under the same conditions. Further identification analyses showed that the components of YCDP with lower molecular weight contributed more to the FRSA of YCDP.

Revêtements sans isocyanatesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Radiation-curable urethane acrylates have been extensively used and successfully implemented in industrial wood coatings thanks to their capability to provide a balance of mechanical and chemical properties. However, isocyanates, one of the main building blocks in the conventional urethane acrylates, pose toxicity and health hazards both in the manufacturing and application, and therefore, are targeted for restricted use and limited occupational exposure in the impending environmental regulations. In this regard, this study presents the development of urethane acrylate oligomers using nonisocyanate approaches and their application in industrial wood coatings. Two acrylic-functional nonisocyanate polyurethane oligomers (NIPU-ACs), NIPU-AC-2 with longer urethane chains and higher flexibility and NIPU-AC-1 with shorter urethane chains, were synthesized as main building blocks of radiation-curable wood coatings. Next, a series of 20 wood coating systems were formulated using a D-optimal mixture experimental design methodology to find the optimized quaternary mixtures composed of the two synthetic NIPU-ACs, and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) and dipropylene glycol diacrylate (DPGDA) as reactive diluents. The results of the study revealed that at a constant 5 wt% of TMPTA, formulations rich in NIPU-AC-2 showed higher impact resistance, scratch resistance, and pull-off adhesion, which was attributed to the flexible structure of this oligomer. On the other hand, coatings including higher contents of NIPU-AC-1, which induces higher crosslink density (XLD) to the system, demonstrated higher Tg and pendulum hardness. Evaluation of the optimal coatings not only validated the predictability of models, but also determined that the coatings have promising stain and abrasion resistance, and good thermal stability. The results show that NIPU-ACs developed in this study have excellent potential as an alternative to conventional urethane acrylates in the development of low-VOC and sustainable industrial wood coatings. Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The authors explain how the use of Six Sigma can provide information speedily that will improve coating performance.
In the coatings industry, pigment powders are typically characterised by a wide variety of particle parameters. Although informative, many parameters are not routinely used in a lab environment due to the complexity of the measurement apparatus and time required obtaining the data.
As a result the coatings formulator is constantly seeking to obtain information that will enable improved coatings performance, while not delaying the development process. Therefore, the formulator would like to use particle parameters that can be quickly and conceniently obtained. Median particle size is such a parameter.
With the advent of newer type automated particle sizing equipment, particle size measurement is now routine. The data collection process may only take a few minutes once samples are prepared. Then, once particle size data is obtained, the coatings formulator must make decisions based on this information.
To that end, Six-Sigma can help the formulator to make conclusions regarding the statistical significance of the product data. Six-Sigma can be used to 1) understand relative median particle size differences and 2) dertermine reproducibility of the measurement equipment.Note de contenu : - Barrage of information
