Although it was discovered in Cornwall, England in 1791, titanium dioxide pigment was not commercially exploited until 1913, when it was created using a fusion technique. Farup and Jebsen developed the Sulphuric acid method, also known as the Sulphate process, in Norway, and commercial production began in 1918. It is stilI the most important component in the synthesis of titanium dioxide pigments. The alternative method, the Chloride procedure, is a more recent invention, with pigments produced by this method first commercialised in 1958. Note de contenu : - Why titanium is more precious ?

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article leads to the development of a mathematical expression for calculation of the CPVC in latex coatings (LCPVC) in emulsions) as a function of the particle size relationship between the binder (or resin) and the pigmentary system present in the coatings.
Where revious works have related LCPVC to resin particle size, here the resin and the pigmentary system particle sizes are not consideres independently, and the expression which is deduced is a function of the ration between them.
By using an idealised "compact spheres model", based on the theoretical CPVC definition, a new model expression is developed to mathematically determine the LCPVC. The proposed model is semi-theoretical in nature, since it requires the use of constants which have been obtained experimentally by other authors.Note de contenu : - The concept of CPVC

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Metallic flake pigments pose quite a few challenges to the powder coating formulators in contrast with the liquid paints. Besides poor static charge characteristics of the metallic pigments, flow properties of resins, kinetics of pigment orientation and uniformity in spreading over the substrate during curing are few important ones amongst many that make powder coating finishes inferior compared to those of the liquid paints. In this article effort has been made to explain the fundamental differences between the liquid paints and powder coatings involving silver metallic flake pigments. The aspects like effect of particle size, resin mixing, pigment orientation etc. that a powder coating formulator need to know while working with metallic pigments, and moreover the ways and means to modify metallic flake pigments for powder coatings to bring about improved finishes are also discussed.

Terres raresIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This paper reports the investigations carried out on the synthesis, characterization and optical properties of a new class of rare earth based near infrared reflective yellow pigments as an alternative to toxic inorganic pigments. The rare earth yellow pigments can be prepared by employing calcination method. The present work reveals that the doping of molybdenum for ceria in gadolinium cerium lattice changes the color hue from cream white to dark yellow. The calcination temperature employed for preparation of these pigments was about 1000°C. This temperature was found to be much lower than that required to achieve the intense yellow hue through conventional solid state calcinations reaction (above 1500°C). X-ray diffraction data confirm the crystalline character of the pigments. The pigment thus developed serves as a potential candidate for NIR reflective pigments for leather applications on account of its NIR reflectance value of 96% in the wavelength region 1100 nm. Thermal images of the finished leather exposed to NIR light clearly indicate the lower heat retention character. The pigment properties were in good agreement with industrial requirements. They also serve as environmentally safer pigments.

The ternary mixture (Water – ethanol – ethyl acetate) reported in this study provided for good solubility/dispersion of leather chemicals. Average particle size of the syntan/dye in solvent / water remaining the same, particle size distribution of dyes and syntans was advantageous in the solvent medium, leading to better diffusion. Amongst various trials, neutralization of the leathers after tanning in solvent medium followed by use of neutralization syntans was found to be more advantageous to obtain leather properties comparable to conventional controls. The adsorption studies of dye used in the present study followed Freundlich model in both solvent and water medium indicates multilayer adsorption. Physical properties of the leathers were similar to that of control, indicating clearly that the solvent had no adversary effect on collagen and also provided for good diffusion and fixation of chemicals. The method thus reported in this study could provide for a minimum change approach to leather processing with ample contribution to water saving.
