For environmental reasons, however, the alkyd emulsions have a great advantage since they are waterborne. In this study, the influence of emulsifier and initial droplet size on the mechanical stability of alkyd emulsions was investigated. Anionic emulsifiers have been shown previously to be more effective than nonionic emulsifiers in the formation of alkyd emulsions. This study showed that an anionic emulsifier also gave more stable emulsions at lower concentrations than did the nonionics. If the concentration was increased, emulsions stabilized with a nonionic emulsifier showed the same stability as the one with the anionic emulsifiers. However, too high a concentration of surfactants is undesirable in paints, since it increases the water sensitivity of the paint film. The mechanical stability of emulsions stabilized with anionic emulsions was less sensitive to the initial droplet size than emulsions stabilized with a nonionic emulsifier. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The development of waterborne alkyd paints based on alkyd emulsions has been stimulated by more stringent health and environmental regulations. In addition, alkyd paints may have better performance in some applications compared to other types of waterborne paints such as latex dispersions. One problem that needs to be overcome is the limited colloidal stability of alkyd emulsions. It is important that the emulsions are not destabilized when exposed to shear forces, such as those produced by pumps used in the paint industry. An alkyd emulsion consists of alkyd oil droplets dispersed in water and stabilized by a surface active agent (emulsifier). Part 1 of this series described the influence of emulsion droplet size, type, and concentration of the emulsifier on the shear stability. The present study is an additional investigation of the influence of the alkyd properties on shear stability. Increasing the acid value of the alkyd increases the stability of emulsions stabilized with nonionic emulsifiers. Emulsions made using alkyds with shorter oil lenghts and higher viscosities were less stable to shear compared to alkyds with higher oil lenghts and lower viscosities. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Cosmetic formulations consist of complex ingredient mixtures. The nature of these ingredients does not always allow for simple mixing. Oil and water as two phases of an emulsion can be mixed but cannot be kept stable as a mixture without the help of an emulsifier and the right mixing equipment.
A number of stirrers, homogenisers and process mixers are available, but which equipment can be used best for a specific formulation development? Stirrers providing lamellar flow or turbulent flow have different geometries. When is high shear needed and when is low shear needed? What role does the homogeniser play? The emulsification is the outcome of two processes: breaking of the oil phase into small drops and the stabilisation of the formed drops. The initial particle size distribution of an emulsion is the result of both steps. The particle size distribution plays a critical role for the emulsion stability, but how can the particle size distribution be determined and which particle size will provide a stable emulsion? The viscosity of the emulsion and the rheological properties are dependent on the particle size distribution. Emulsions can be fluid like milk and viscous like toothpaste. Both emulsion types should be easily applicable to skin. Mixing of complex mixtures seems easier than it really is. However, with just some background information of the effect good mixing equipment can provide, the mixing process becomes a sensible tool rather than a threat and it leads to stable formulations.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10363

Vitamine CIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Repair, protect and moisture are the key consumer requirements in skin care. The components that help achieve these claims are often either monovalent or multivalent electrolytes, such as salts of alpha hydroxy acids, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (sodium PCA), phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (PBSA), etc. However, it is difficult to formulate with these actives since they tend to have a negative effect on the viscosity, texture and stability provided by commonly used traditional anionic rheology modifiers.
Sodium acrylates/beheneth-25 methacrylate crosspolymer (and) hydrogenated polydecene (and) lauryl glucoside, is a multifunctional polymer based on acrylate chemistry that enables the formulation of smooth and elegant emulsions containing high levels of electrolytic active ingredients by offering excellent efficiency as a thickener, stabiliser, and primary or auxiliary emulsifier, with improved electrolyte tolerance and unique sensory properties. It offers excellent viscosity building and yield value across a range of polymer solids providing stabilisation and suspension properties in finished formulations ranging from low viscosity lotions to high viscosity creams.Note de contenu : - METHODS AND MATERIALS : General performance (viscosity and yield value - Viscosity and yield blue - Electrolyte tolerance - Sensory evaluation at equilibrium pH - Emulsification and co-emulsification property - Thickening/stabilising systems with challenging electrolytic electrolytic actives
