The growing demand and increasing cost of TiO2 has driven the attention of paint technologists to search for other alternatives. There has been a continuous effort to replace part of TiO2 with fine particle size extenders in paint formulations. A detailed study has been undertaken to replace TiO2pigment by various percentages of calcined clays in two latex paint formulations. The properties like thixotropy, hiding power, light fastness, film brightness, scrub resistance and weather resistance has been determined to establish the optimum use of calcined clays in the paint formulation. Thixotropy, one of the important properties of latex paints has been studied with the help of the thixotropic loop area method. The viscosity data has also been analysed by Casson's equation. It has been found that the calcined clays can replace up to 20% TiO2 in paints formulation without having any adverse effect on their properties. Note de contenu : - Materials

Its chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to introduce it as a crosslinker in the castor oil, a renewable resource, to develop functional organic inorganic hybrid coatings. A series of castor oil-based organic–inorganic hybrid materials were prepared from castor oil, isophorone diisocyanate, and the different weight percentages of synthesized HD. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and the universal testing machine were employed to characterize the hybrid films. The measured properties were found to be strongly influenced by the weight ratio of HD to the castor oil-based polyurethanes. The glass transition temperatures (T g) for the cured hybrid films were found to be 26–72°C. Antibacterial activity, in vitro hydrolytic degradation, and swelling properties of the hybrid films have been studied. The cured hybrid films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity, which was enhanced with addition of the HD. The alkoxy silane-crosslinked castor oil-based coatings have shown better mechanical and viscoelastic properties in comparison to the control (uncrosslinked castor oil-based polyurethane-urea) coatings. The results showed that the weight percent of the HD is the main factor that controls the thermal, antimicrobial, mechanical, swelling, and degradation properties of these hybrid films. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The performance of powder coatings depends on the quality of pre-treatment, other parameters like curing schedule, temperature and duration of baking, thickness of coating as well as power pack voltage have a profound influence on the overall performance of powder coatings. With an objective to establish these parameters for a commercial black epoxy powder, the changes in physical properties of its coatings have been studied. A coating of 70-100um thickness is found to have good physical properties when backed as per specified temperature and duration. The scratch hardness, gloss and rocker hardness as well as other properties of the powder coatings were found to be optimum when they were stoved at around 180°C. A duration of 15 minutes for stoving the powder coatings at around 180-190°C is found to result in their optimum properties. In order to give a good performance, the commercial black epoxy powder coat may not be subjected to powder packed voltage beyond 70-80 KV. The resistance of the coatings prepared as per selected parameters to hot water, detergents and aromatic solvents has been observed to be very good. The situation represents a challenge to coating science, as the need arose to lower the solvent content and some major development has taken place in the last few years. In the present paper, control of VOC content using different methods for acrylic coatings crosslinked with MF and isocyanate resin has been discussed. Control of binder viscosity and molecular weight for high solid thermoset acrylic coatings by adopting different methods has also been discussed.
